    -I'm surprised by a few comments angry at Paizo for making a new edition, and I thought we were past this argument. Paizo's entire business model was challenged by WOTC trying to revoke the OGL. Continuing to publish its core rulebooks unchanged, using elements and language that WOTC might argue was its IP, brought unnecessary risk to Paizo's entire publication line. And so equating it to WOTC for protecting itself from WOTC is bizarre, to say the least.
    -Here is the LINK to the Paizo post that I mention, "Pathfinder Society and the Remaster": paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo6sifn?Pathfinder-Society-and-the-Remaster

      I think I'm just against you calling it a new edition. It's more like a big errata. It's nothing compared to changes like 3.0 to 3.5 of D&D, which would be the closest comparison.

    • @Nastara
      @Nastara 8 месяцев назад +45

      @@aebonstudio7193 I suppose rules lawyer can’t win. If he says its not a new edition he’s called a hypocrite for calling OneD&D a new edition. If he says it is people say there isn’t enough changes.
      From what I can tell just trying to keep a consistent stance. He think there’s enough changes to justify considering it a 2.1.

      I for one am glad that Paizo is cutting that WotC ambilical cord.

    • @SpaceDrake
      @SpaceDrake 8 месяцев назад +46

      "Challenged" is an understatement. Hasbro effectively attempted to use a legal maneuver to ambush Paizo and either force *massive* rents from them for existing or just force the company, and Pathfinder, to stop existing entirely. And the original plan, before it was leaked, was to give publishers roughly a *week*, if that, to comply (e.g., that was going to be impossible and Hasbro could bring proceedings against the "competitors" they wished to snuff out).
      Even with Hasbro having backed off (for the moment), they could still try to press through with this or a similar tactic at any moment. It is absolutely crucial, therefore, for Pathfinder to finally cut the final cord and separate itself entirely from the D&D IP. It is the only way to ensure that the game can continue to exist in safety.
      And yes, this portends a return to the darkness of the 90s in the D&D space. Let us hope it simply does not go *that* far.

      @SpaceDrake Agreed, on all points.
      I think people are giving too much importance to the "edition" of these games, and by that I'm referring to the "2e" and "5e" designations.
      If they're saying its the same game, then who cares WHAT it's called? If it's compatible with the original rules, and otherwise just updates some things, then all the hubbub around is it or is it not is just sensationalist over-reaxtion, at least in my opinion. They could've called it pathfinder 4e for all I care and my only complaint would be why they skipped 3e

  • @Lookupforbricks
    @Lookupforbricks 8 месяцев назад +80

    I actually like the playing the game rules being next to the Appendices and indexes. When I'm introducing new people to the game they want to see what their options are, so they ignore everything else and just look at creation options. And when I need to flip through the book for rules reminders I think it will be nice to have the rules closer to the index saving me time when I need to look something up. I'll see how this goes in practice when I get my copy but I thought I would just put that out there for consideration.

      I agree. As a forever GM I feel this will be helpful.

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG
      @TheRulesLawyerRPG  8 месяцев назад +13

      I see the appeal, but I'm mainly thinking of the new player, being systematic in teaching, and not frustrating people with certain learning styles who get lost and frustrated under the current presentation. ("I have to flip around!" is a common complaint, which granted they'd still have to flip around here, but some people get very frustrated and feel lost when they don't have a sense of the system first) I think people who want to jump to character options are probably already inclined to skip around to what they want to.
      EDIT: I see the argument for having it near the glossary/index which is a fair point

    Having recently picked up the beginners box, it's well put together, but I can see why they wouldn't mention it here. It's got a number of passages that don't make a ton of sense in the remaster and there are certain areas I think it's lacking in (the two most notable being it never once mentions free actions and has multiple instances where the players can get Sickened but never mentions the Sickened condition by name)

    Playing the game is in the back because the two easiest places to refer to in a book are the front and the back. I agree with their organization, because first time readers need a primer, and jumping in to build a character to give context to the how to play rules is probably a good new player experience.
    Another example of this is in older 40k codexes, where the army list building materials are in the very back (discounting the last two pages of reference tables) because it makes it easy to reference without blasting a player reading it for the first time with a bunch of table entries of points and options.

      it IS but sadly the new shit devs are power creeping the game now, shitting and ignoring on the lore except when OLD devs are involved... and blatantly not giving a shit about Race lore canon when making rules... there are shit you can do in the game that makes absolutely NO SENSE lore wise like Kitsune anything...for example. Kitsune are ALWAYS either a full Kitsune or a FULL (whatever race typically HUMAN they bred with.) in fact most lore dictates that Humans are the ONLY race they CAN breed with...the Female of this act determines the Race typically...Kitsune cannot have MOST "Heritages" lore wise lowering it down to probably Aasimar and thats about it...if its "blood" related and MOST are they cant have them if you want to be emersive...very much the same with the Nagaji as most are made in magic labs and can only breed with EACHOTHER... but nah man F the world that has been 15-20 years in the making just let people do what they want...sorry for the rant but im a BIG emersion and RP guy and ive been a fan since PF FIRST LAUNCHED and it feels like a knife wound in the chest...LORE EXISTS FOR A REASON FFS...if you dont want to play on Golarion fine whatever I dont actually care but the STANDARD RULES SHOULD BE LORE ACCURATE NOT THE REVERSE.

As for the beginner box and archives of Nethys not appearing, that is likely to avoid needing to reprint if anything changes to either. If they rename the beginner box or the archives changes to a different address or anything of that nature suddenly what will be a static printed work will be out of date.

    Organization - A lot of games I've read are organized something along the lines of an intro (which contains a brief overview of what sort of stories the game is good at telling, the basic gist of 'what is a roleplaying game' within the context of this specific game, any setting details players should know up front, and the general gist of the system (e.g. 'the core mechanic' and any terms that you're going to need to know to understand character creation, but with none of the system's crunch or specifics). After that there's character creation and any related concepts, and then it will give the added detail on how the game is played from the player's side, which is where the combat rules are going to be located, before transitioning into the GM section which obviously wouldn't be the case with PF2eR's structure. I generally like that broad organization schema.
    From the sound of it, that would basically just amount to shifting the Rules Overview from the Playing the Game chapter into the Intro (Assuming there's enough there to give a sense of how skill rolls work and why you might want to make certain character creation choices without any of the specifics)

    For the death and dying rules being more lethal I personally think its a good step, as I've legitimately spent the last 3 months in a game charging in blindly 100% trying to die, I even told my GM that if I'm nearing death just kill me. He was running the dying rules as you described that you do, and I can actively say as someone who has literally tried to get my character killed, that interpretation is so lenient that it took the me just telling the GM I'm dead and don't want to make the saves to actually die. So with the change making death more deadly I think it adds more urgency and makes it a larger priority to get your party members up to retreat instead of the party going oh... we've got a round or two lets just try to focus them down right quick

    it would make sense to make a new beginner box with the terminology changes, better flow for new gms and players, inspiration to build stuff without the books and such. what i really hope they do is besides the basic 4 classes they make dedicated lvl 1 beginner stats of the other classes for witches, alchemists, gunslingers and such for new ppl that wanna try them. yes i know premade lvl 1s exist for iconics but stat wise aint beginner friendly imho since they are technically design for quick picks in society quests.

    The suggestion of "go learn with the starter set" feels kind of frustrating, the buy in to buy both the player and gm core is already £70, thats already a high buy in to be able to run games, rather than wasting an additional £40 on a demo version of the game that tells me to go buy the £70 books once we finish it. (Plus arguably also the monster core as well thats questionably optional for a new GM) I know this is a genre wide issue, dnd does this, the upcoming ffxiv ttrpg system also will be doing this, but god I hate it. (EDIT: A lot of the replies have made a decent point of "go buy this thing first before fully buying in to see if you like the system" but the act of buying it as a failsafe to get out with less spent if it goes well still feels bad and mentally is a hard wall to get past knowing that if I enjoy I WILL want the other core books, I do appreciate the responses even if they feel somewhat missing the forest for teh trees.)

It comes with gm and pc guide softcover with essential rules and its own bestiary. You can easily spend many months of homebrew in it. The ideal path would be to tell you to buy the beginner box, try it, and then if you liked it, buy the full book. That's great. Telling you to buy the demo _after_ you bought the main game would feel bad. That is why there isn't an advice inside this book to go buy the Beginner box, imho.

      I feel like this a smart decision though? You’re completely right that almost all ttrpgs have a starter set separate from the core rules books. Think this is smart as spending a fraction of the cost for a starter set to try the game and see if it’s for you/playgroup feels better than playing full price and finding out the system doesn’t jive well.
      Most of the time these starter sets are packed with plenty of content anyways. Save the core books if it’s a system you know your group will stick with.

So giving it the Minion trait and allowing you to give it two actions would only ever be used to have it run into cover and hide so it doesn't get murdered with its low health pool.

      @@Bloodfencer1990To be fair, this is a game all about giving players what they want, but fitting those options into the context of the system. Giving it the minion trait preserves an already used function of the game, without needing a new set of rules. As for the feat tax aspect, I get it. But It’s only a tax in the (likely) 1% of campaigns where a GM isn’t going to just give it for free. This feat allows a player in any campaign to pick up a pet. Full stop. While it might seem nuts to you, there ARE GMs out there that would be reluctant to hand out a free pet as a house rule. All this feat does (and many like it) is provide a player a way to fulfill their pet fantasy under official PF2 rules w/o fear of the GM saying no.
      I’ll be shocked if most GMs don’t hand this feat out for free upon player request. I know I certainly will. I have zero interest in taxing my players for anything fun like this that doesn’t also affect game balance. I already do free pets in my games, and if nothing else this just makes for an official listing that will likely show up on Pathbuilder and the like.

    How does Seek action work in Exploration Mode?
    Like you can Seek Objects or Creatures.
    Searching objects you roll Perception vs Stealth DC which is determined by Hazards, Haunts, Traps, Hidden paths and other Secret.
    Searching creatures you roll Perception vs Stealth DC which is determined by creature's Stealth DC?
    So when in Exploration Mode you spot a hidden creature they chance from Unnoticed or Undetected to Hidden and swap to Encounter Mode rolling Initiative? The hidden creature would roll Stealth and if you did previously notice them you could now tell to your friends? But Pointing Out the Enemies requires you to observe the enemies? At least you could use Free Action to Speak on other creature's turn stating "Enemies!" Tough you might not know that they are enemies.

      @@scottread2979 But which are they? Avoid Notice allows you to roll Stealth as initiative but when you come across of group of Players or NPCs using Avoid Notice are they already hidden or perhaps undetected or maybe unnoticed? On top of that if they are Unnoticed and you take seek action would they become undetected or hidden? Rules kinda assume they all people in encounter are undetected and no one is really unnoticed? Which leads to the dilema how do we determinated are they undetected? Is the act of just doing Avoid Notice enough to grant you Undetected and as long as you succeed initiative Stealth check against Perception DC you stay undetected? But that one person using Search Creatures you would be observed but now you roll stealth initiative does that make you Hidden to him but undetected to everyone else? Going from Exploration Mode to Encounter Mode is gray area of rules and super unclear, especially with dyslexia and the rulings seem wake and for searching creatures there is no other ruling beside Observant Explorer reffering to it same way as Find Traps does but Searching Traps has specific rules of Search Activity during Exploration Mode but there are no rules Seraching Creatures in Exploration mode, so can you search creatures and is that different action from searching objects ...........

    • @feral_orc
      @feral_orc 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@xezzee @xezzee if you've "come across them" already then they are not hidden.
      Directly from Avoid Notice - "If you’re Avoiding Notice at the start of an encounter, you usually roll a Stealth check instead of a Perception check both to determine your initiative and to see if the enemies notice you (based on their Perception DCs, as normal for Sneak, regardless of their initiative check results)."
      So you use the normal rules for Sneak. If you beat the enemies Perception DC, you are undetected.
      The "Search" Exploration activity says nothing about moving from exploration mode to encounter mode. If a character is actively searching and beats the Stealth DC of an enemy hiding then they become aware of something, but not exactly what it is. From Search - "a character notices the presence or absence of something unusual in the area, but it doesn’t provide a comprehensive catalog of everything there. Instead, it gives a jumping-off point for closer inspection or an encounter".
      So in a random scenario, enemies are sneaking up on a group of players. They roll stealth to Avoid Notice and beath the Perception DCs of all PCs. One of the PCs is searching, and succeeds against the Stealth DC of the enemies. Maybe they hear a noise or see some leaves rustling. Maybe they know they aren't alone but can't tell exactly where the enemy is. Now if they want to use a Seek action, you have to roll initiative and start moving into an ecounter. If an enemy failed or crit failed on Avoid Notice, EVERYONE has the chance of seeing it because you compare your result to the DC of everyone you're trying to hide from, not just the person searching.
      To reverse the situation, enemies are standing around Searching, and the players are Avoiding Notice. The PCs while exploring would roll stealth, the enemies would roll Perception. If all the PCs pass, they're undetected. If one of the enemies succeeds, initiative would begin with the players undetected and enemies knowing something is wrong.

    • @xezzee
      @xezzee 8 месяцев назад

      @@feral_orc I see.
      You can do only one Exploration Activity at the time which are basically you repeating one action over and over again.
      As Searching is is based on Seek action would that not mean you have to choose between Searching Creatures or Searching Objects like Hazards, Haunts and Secret paths?
      If enemies take Avoid Notice as Exploration Activity would it not make sense to roll the Stealth before hand and then later use that as Initiative for the encounter? Also if one succeeds Avoid Notice would they not be Unnoticed? And if the creatures is Unnoticed you are also Undetected as rules for unnoticed state? And if someone uses the Seek Creatures as Exploration Activity and succeeded the Perception check against any unnoticed and/or undetected Creature the creature would becomes Hidden? While Creature is Hidden you wouldn't learn what type of Creature it is? But if you were to crit succeed your Search Creature Exploration Activity would they not become Observed and you would learn that they are for examples Kobolds?
      So if we have mirrored encounter where Goblins are using Avoid Notice in A Goblins want to Ambush the players and B where the Goblins want to Avoid the players if in both cases Goblins succeed Avoid Notice Stealth roll (which would be used as initiative) in A there would be Encounter where Players are surrounded by the Goblins but in B the players would walk past the Goblins without ever entering to Encounter Mode? Also in A the Player who rolls higher initiative than Goblins would notice something is off like falling leaves just before the Goblins jump from ambush and it would not be meta gaming to use Seek action to find Undetected enemies?
      Taking the same A and B if one player was searching for creatures and succeeded the Perception roll against Stealth DC the Unnoticed creatures would become Hidden DM would start Encounter Mode but place players 20ft to 300ft farther away from Goblins instead of being surrounded by Goblins? The players who have yet not rolled would get to now roll initiative for combat but both Goblins and the Player Searching for Creatures would use the rolls they rolled as initiative? Now question is if a player who was Defending rolled highest initiative would he now know there are undetected creatures or would the creatures be unnoticed? How should this be run in Encounter Mode? Do you allow the player to Seek Creatures? I mean Encounter Mode almost always is involving Creatures? Do they get magical six sense to know there are Undetected Creatures? Or do we assume the player who noticed them would automatically use free action on other creatures turn to speak and say "There are hidden creatures ahead."
      The rules how to use Seek Creature as Exploration Activity are missing?
      They give examples of Avoid Notice but not what happens if someone were to use Search Creatures 🤔 That leaves a lot to the DM to come up with.
      I'm sorry about this wall of text. I'm just trying to make sense of the confusing rules :< As English being my third language and having Dyslexia it makes hard to understand how they work sometimes, especially when they are not in the rule book 😓

      I’m not the RL, but I will still answer the question. While I agree with the other commenter about their suggestion being the wiser choice, I feel like it misses the mark based on your stipulation that you want to primarily deal with the Remaster material.
      The best answer for you (if you’re somewhat new to the ttrpg hobby) would be to wait two weeks and then check out Archives of Nethys. My understanding is it’ll have all the new rules, terminology, etc. on official release day. The reason I say to wait is due to the terminology changes. Cutting back on the learning curve of word or phrase changes like Attack of Opportunity, which will forever be called Reactive Strike going forward, just makes sense.
      Should you have money burning a hole in your pocket and a large desire to buy a book now, and financially support Paizo, pick up Rage Of Elements. It released this summer and is fully compatible with the Remastered format. Even the applicable terminology changes have been made. However, please be aware that the new Class in that book, the Kineticist, while extremely fun, is also enough to make some new players’ head spin. So while I do recommend picking it up, do so now but maybe skip over the actual Kineticist class for now. The rest of the book should still work great for learning the new terminology.
      Otherwise, just wait out the two weeks and you can buy the two new Remastered books.
      All that said, if you’re coming from another system, such as D&D 5e, and you are pretty familiar with the terminology in that system, I would suggest you do what the other commenter said and browse through the current stuff of interest on Archives. Outside the many terminology changes, 99% of the original PF2e things are staying the same.

    This isn't necessarily a bad thing but just like open source software development, it will be a challenge to consider not only ORC but all other possible alternatives to OGL so as much as Paizo wants everyone to just use their new licensing, it's never going to be as universally used as OGL was, sadly.

      The main difference there is how extensive the changes are. From what I have seen of the playtests, every single 5e remaster class is getting vastly reworked and their identity changed.
      PF2E remaster is only massively changing a couple classes and everything else might get some new feats.
      A pf2e fighter and a pf2er fighter will act about the same. A 5e fighter and 5er fighter will be so different you might as well call them different classes. Or at least that is my understanding of it. Now, some classes are getting massive changes, be it because things that were in the OGL got removed or changed.
      For a more video-gamey analogy, 5e's update is like the change between named versions of WoW, where some things might have the same name, but everything is pretty different. Pf2e is closer to a mid-season update, where they rebalance some things, change some mechanics, but overall things work the same.

      My position is that both are new editions. Calling the new D&D edition 6e has been my position since it was announced and it's for very specific reasons - first, there have been long-running complaints about D&D that WOTC can fix, which require revising some of its core engine. Evolution is healthy. And WOTC has been walking back on a lot of popular changes from early playtests in the name of "backwards compatibility." Second, WOTC is engaged in a ridiculous campaign saying "there are no editions, it's just D&D." Why engage in precision when dealing with insanity?
      Criticizing a company that takes its customers for granted because it is the market leader, and criticizing the ruleset that is openly being revised (with the company soliciting feedback), is rather healthy and needed for the hobby.

      @@TheRulesLawyerRPG - The amount of changes in both cases is about like the differences in D&D 3e to 3.5. 3.5 to 4e was a full edition change. Calling both of the current revisions a .5 change would be fair, but you have not been doing that. You act like D&D is a full edition change, while PF is just a tiny update.
      Further, saying the changes are big enough to call the D&D revision a new edition, but also saying the changes aren't going to happen, just makes no sense.
      I understand the frustrations with 5e, but it's what I run because it's what people are willing to play. Part of the reluctance to try Pathfinder comes from the perception of tedious difficulty, but another thing that pushes potential players away is the Pathfinder evangelism in the form of negative campaigning against something they currently enjoy.
      As to the companies, both have their good and bad spots, but the business execs, designers, and writers are all different people.

    The hardest barrier for me to overcome is the removal of the alignment system. I've heard your explanation, but I just cannot get on board with it. It was a stupid decision, flat out. I realize they did it to further distinguish themselves from D&D, but that just really cuts out a MASSIVE chunk of the very foundation of what the entire system was built on. Those conversations around the table about what actions were or weren't in line with a specific alignment were part of the experience. You should be having those conversations, but now... What? Complete moral relativism? A heroic champion who acts selflessly to help others and a tyrannical despot who cannibalizes children are morally equivalent now? You can no longer classify one of those as Good or Evil? No. That's just really dumb. It's a fantasy game, there SHOULD be a distinction between good and evil. So what if you're a morally gray character? That's what Neutral was for. Every single character fits within one of the 9 Alignments easily, even if their actions step over the line to something else from time to time.
    I want to like it. I do. I'm just going to need a lot more convincing. Like, sit down with someone and have a 2-3 hour conversation about the pros, cons, utility within the game system, and the very definitions of Good, Evil, Law, and Chaos. I think what bothers me the most, is that I no longer have a place in D&D. I have tried to play 5e a dozen times, but I just do not like the system. I found Pathfinder 2e, and I have really been growing to enjoy it. With this Remaster however, I feel like I no longer have a place here either.

      If alignment is your bag maybe some old school renaissance games might be more for you?
      What kind of games do you like rules wise? Does alignment need to be a feature at all to have fun? Or only in D&D clones/derivatives?
      I find alignment annoying and I’ve ignored it in every DnD clone I’ve played. Including PF 2e. Even if opened up some AD&D or basic i’d do my best to ignore alignment besides what as needed for effects

    I'm not going to give Paizo hundreds of dollars to replace the books I bought just over a year ago. It's no different than the OneD&D bullshit where it's going to be minor changes and what amounts to an in depth errata. Now, Paizo made all my books useless. Please don't give me any bullshit about my books still being "compatible". That's NEVER happened in a functional way with ANY "updates" like this with pervious D&D releases, and PF2e is no different.
    And then they make the books smaller AND more expensive.
    I get you like to shill for Pazio, but if you're going to be "objective" here and call out D&D and WotC (which make no mistake is dogshit), then you MUST do the same for Pazio. Otherwise, you're not a content creator, you're a marketing arm for a company.
    So, which are you?

      You know, I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this. In particular after we talked our 8 person table into switching, which is not cheap for most of them. Only 3 of the 8 could be considered to have "adult" jobs and only 2 of those 3 really have disposable income (myself being one of them, being, you know, _old_ ).
      The only advantage that Paizo has over WotC here is the fact they do put the rules for free online, but the question here is HOW FAST? Did they give the guy that maintains Archives of Nethys early access to the changes so he can code them in to be live on street date, or are we waiting possibly MONTHS?

      The reality is the cost of the books hasnt changed since PF2e was released, and it should have based on the costs of producing books. Basically everyone has talked about this. So while I get your oppinion about rebuying, the cost of books has gone up. Thats just a fact of the industry.
