    GOAT IU team. Put it together at the exact time needed. Maryland was really good. Beat great ACC teams earlier. IU just crushed!!

    Watching this brings back 8th grade memories. I almost forgot about Reggie Jackson, I used to see him play in Philly when I would visit family there. Never really became a huge star in college, but was a good solid player...

    Give Don Criqui credit: He understood what he was seeing. This team eventually showed it was worthy of the halftime hype he laid on at 40:42 "This is as good a college basketball team as I've ever seen play a half of basketball. I"m talking about the UCLA teams. Indiana's been phenomenal."

    Those of us attending IU at the time had seen the team finally wake up and start to play much better down the stretch. Still, this game was, WOW, we are really, really good.

      It might be their very best NCAA game. Which other ones come close? Perhaps the second half against LSU this same year. UCLA in '92?

    • @bradlewis6514
      @bradlewis6514 5 лет назад +1

      It just might be considering the quality of their opponent! Maryland was the runner-up to Carolina in the ACC and Indiana made them look JV! They were phenomenal!

      @bradlewis6514 5 лет назад +3

      It may have only been a four point win and no defense, but I'll always remember them taking down UNLV in the '87 semifinals! The fact that Indiana put up 97 points and stayed with a team that prided itself on track meet style (#1 scoring team in America that season)! Was more than impressive the Hoosiers staying with them and beating them at their game!

    This IU run was one of the greatest of all time. They destroyed some quality teams. I didn’t realize how dominant and in tune they were. I was in jr. High school at the time. This team would give a lot of great teams a beating.

    • @bradlewis6514
      @bradlewis6514 4 года назад +2

      It was due to their chemistry hitting the right note around Isiah! That was his team, no question, and once the other parts began to play in-tune they became a legit contender! The proof - they went 0-4 against what is considered today Power 5 conference opponents (Kentucky, Louisville, Clemson and Notre Dame) preceding Big Ten play! Then went 5-0 in the NCAA tournament, winning by an avg of 22 points! Amazing what three months can do to a team!

  • @tleatherland
    @tleatherland 5 лет назад +5

    Although they were on the radar and had won the Big Ten, this game is when the nation really took notice of IU. They had nine losses, but five of those were before January, and the other four afterward were mostly close games. Then, they won their tournament games by an average of 22.6 points per game, something no team has topped since. Bob Knight said that team could've kept playing forever and never lost.

    • @avdreader1
      @avdreader1 5 лет назад +1

      That's a helluva comment by Coach Knight.

    • @bradlewis6514
      @bradlewis6514 5 лет назад +2

      Their turnaround was amazing - not one signature win in the non-conference before the tournament and then suddenly they bulldoze their way thru the bracket! The Maryland club they beat was no slouch and had just routed Virginia and Ralph Sampson the week before! Had Buck Williams and Albert King! But Indiana was healthy and confident! Their opposition found out rather quickly in the NCAA's! It's incredible what three months can do

    • @bradlewis6514
      @bradlewis6514 5 лет назад +3

      And it helped to have the best and most complete floor general in the country - Isiah Thomas - he was a difference maker, made that team better once they gained their traction and boy did they ever!

      @@avdreader1 Well, Landon had finally started to play. At the rate he was improving, he might have become the best big man in the country (besides Sampson, probably) in 1981-2. The sky was the limit for him. :-(

    Criqui misquotes Knight at 9:29. Knight had called Isiah his "most important recruit," not "the greatest player I've ever recruited." After all, Knight had recruited Larry Bird. Thomas was important because he helped put IU back on-track to win national championships. Knight also thought that recruiting Thomas would open Chicago for IU, but that didn't really pan out.

    This game reminds me how much I hate the 3 point shot. I don't like the 30 second shot clock either. If they took it back to 45, I'd be OK with that. Kids leaving early is bad for the sport too. Money runs everything. I don't blame them for jumping, but it's too bad.
