Nothing has changed the world of metal working more than the 4 inch cutter disk and cheaper angle grinders. I remember the days of hand wielded hacksaw blades and.... aching arms.
Power tools have changed everything.. Imagine hand powered drills, saws, screwdrivers and no power tools to build anything.. Thats how it was done in the 40s and 50s..LOL
Blair needs to make his own masterclass on metal work. The way he thinks shows how much experience he has!im always pleasantly surprised on how he approcaches thimg
A special thanks I've watched just about every car and custom show from Gas Monkey, Bitchen, Foose, Graveyard to Vegas Counts and first time to see actual repair work being done in realtime a great learning Vid. Your the Best. This is why these RUclips videos are so great not trying to jam 40hrs into 40min.
Mike and Blair are the best car guys on tv and webrnet cause you see them build everything from the bottom up and for those who don't have no idea about body work, here it is on live tv or online. Doesn't get much better than this plus I don't have to listen to Avery goin on and on when after all's said and done there's always more said than done with Avery..I would much rather watch Mike and Blair getting things done correctly..
I had that car in the early 90's. It was a real SS with a straight 6 the 2 speed with the console. The frame rusted under the doors. Convertible top was in good shape. Sold it fifteen hundred.
The Blackhawk hydraulic equipment I have been using as a child in my family business. I remember I started off on the Hydraulic end helping my old man and then I would release by unscrewing. Watching you guys do this 👌🏼. We still have the same equipment kept it all, including a Blackhawk pulling dozer.
It’s cool you show us things like this. I have seen people use frame pullers. I know they use the hut pump like you do, but I never seen it used. Thanks lads.
You're sure lucky to have Blair there. Also lucky he's so patient I laughed so hard when he explained where he had to push from and mike was like, where. Blair, " I just told you" hahaha..love Blair.
Always great informative content on the restoration and salvaging incredible cars from our past ! Myself I used anything comealongs ,a jackall and I love it ! Good memories. Thank you for sharing
I think I would have cried when I heard the rock wipeout the rear quarter ... Great to see you gaining momentum Mike in getting some work completed on your awesome collection. Will your "repair plan" be financially achievable so that you can keep Blair employed? 😊
@@blairsmith726 hoping some folks show up to the shop and make him some reasonable cash offers on the projects he is trying to move to a good home and he accepts them. He actually has some very cool rare projects just screaming "fix me". Blows my mind how many times he has all the spare parts laying around to get the car more or less fixed up.
More of this shit! looking forward to the progress, id personnaly have started by pulling out the skin PDR style, that way you release the inward pressure and it will sometimes pop out when u push from the insde at the same time for the last bit. Starting from the interior will make the external work much harder to get the crumple out... But I know nothing! you guys will sort it im sure.. always a pleasure to watch you two get stuck in!
A solid suggestion. If we did more collision repair we would have to obtain some pulling equipment. Using the pushing method probably requires more force but most of us have at least a bottle jack and can make this work at home 👍
Great video, just love the problem solving on the go, down to earth repairs and wonderful team work with each listening and bouncing ideas back and forth.
Really enjoy the show Mike. This includes Matt and his questions. Not everyone as had the pleasure of working on cars. Our generation did out of necessity and pleasure. Better than video games. I hope your finger's alright and that the cut is just a minor inconvenience. But finger tips and toes are nerve endings and very sensitive. Take care. P.S. Use the rack to straighten out the SS and please have Blair paint it. It's worth it. Rol
Hi Mike, Hi Blair, The work you're doing on that 64 SS is great. Please Mr. Smith, more paint please. Checking the wheelbase, could that help determine where the quarter shifted ? Where would be the ideal spot to measure and get an accurate measurement in order to determine where the car has shifted ? The shape of the floor seems to be very good and to my surprise, not buckled. Mike, after all the work and parts, this car deserves a paint job. Take care.
Checking wheelbase is always a good idea. To find discrepancies its important to measure from many different reference points on the body. The more the merrier
@@blairsmith726Would it be to your advantage to put the frame / car on Mike's rack and pull it back into shape ? The only disadvantage to using the suspension for reference is that it's springy and not a stiff place to measure from.
Mike needs to hire someon to come in and clean up and organize. Then youd have space for the frame rack. Blair always doing great work with what he has!
Being a convertible, I would think you would do all the body straightening with the doors closed so it all moves together and gives it more support to the pillars. We'll see if you need to do some door adjustments later. Good job Blair, Thank you Mike.
In general you're absolutely correct. In this case the door opening is heavily damaged and i need to open and close a replacement door to continuously check my fit. It was definitely a bit challenging but a freakin fun time doing it. I am easily amused. Lol
Ya need to make yourself a tram gauge, like a bar with sliding feeler rods at both ends to gather distances from a straight car and compare to evaluate how much you need to push. The door got sucked back when the striker pin got pulled by caving in the quarter panel
Yo se que no podrás ver mi comentario por qué no se escribir inglés pero quiero que sepas que eres mi gran inspiración espero poder conocerte e ir a tu país a ver tu gran colección de carros clásicos :,)
Blair, When my friend Doug was rear ended, I told him to take his 1998 Cavalier to a body shop that had a frame rack. Mike has the tool, get some help to clean the shop in order to straighten the SS out. It did take a violent hit from a boulder. Make sure the entire chassis is back to being square. It worked wonders on a 1998 Cavalier (Doug's car). A rack will put the car back to original. It's an SS and worth the effort. I know this sounds like criticism, I'm just trying to be helpful. Take care.
I was a fabricator most of my life, its sucks getting steel slivers in the eyeball. I've had steel in my eyes more times than I can count and had to have my eye frozen and cleaned out I don't know how many times. It's always handy to have a clean station on hand all the time. Actually you'd be surprised there actually not that expensive.
Is it possible that the door jamb there could be twisted a little bit take the door off and measure from the front of the couch to that where the door shuts
No we didn't and that probably would have been a good idea. The passenger side had excellent gaps and appeared straight therefore it could have been a great benchmark. On frames I always take measurements but on the sheetmetal i usually push or pull to fit or "eyeball" until i get down to the nitty gritty
Also I would have discovered the drivers side was shorter much earlier if i had followed your method. Thats a mistake on my part. And they DO happen lol
@blairsmith726 Well, hopefully it all makes sense that's a super nice car when they're done. Norm Lutkin used to have a nice white one with red interior. Probably still has it.
A variation of your suggestion would definitely work. My concern is damaging or bending the hoist and less control over the straightening. Going slow i can see if im causing more damage or if we're winning. I have absolutely used a backhoe and powerpoles in the past but not with a witness. Lol
Thus far the frame appears okay but we will check further Im confident we will get this car straightened out properly and hopefully in less time than it would take to access the frame rack ( move 15 cars, one atco and a bus. Lol All comments are wothy and constructive criticism is also welcome. None of us know it all. 👍
The chrome work covers the body seems of the car. How are you going to cover the quarter seems? The chrome work will make it easier to repair by just being able to swap parts. Welding the body parts together will make more work than necessary.
It's amazing how good of a teacher Blair is without never ending BS being in his way...Keep up the good work and patience Mr Blair..

I sure hope you treat Blair like a king, Mike. If you didn't have him there, you would never get anything done. Nice work, guys.👍🏻😎

the rock hit at an angle which changed the square of the rear area you guys will get it done
Is it possible that the door jamb there could be twisted a little bit take the door off and measure from the front of the couch to that where the door shuts
Yes. The door jam or "B" pillar is quite twisted. I finally started measuring from the edge of the door to remove that variable from the equation
Did we measure the distances of various points from drivers A to passengers B beforehand? Curious.
