Hey everyone. 12 years ago I made this piece, not knowing why. After all this time I am realizing the power of the creative mind and how time and space are irrelevant. I have a new profound understanding about what drove me to make something so weirdly personal and obscure and it lights me up with joy, knowing the source of inspiration wasn’t the burrito from the night before. :). I love how life is a process of growth. Thank you all for being sensitive enough to wonder deeply about meaning as I do.
Nearly three years here... Same, nothing's changed... Just the fact that we're counting the years shows it. It's like, once you fall for someone, you're gone, there's no going back...
I think she already had passed on. He misses her and "visits" her in his dreams or memories. He's holding on to her and it's holding him back. Finally, he realizes he has to let her go.
This one is my favorite, all of the other ones are like "well obviously it's a thing a guy would do" or "nope it was the woman" but this one is peaceful and strong.

This guy did animation for Iron Giant, Osmosis Jones, did the design for Spider-Man's costume in the Raimi films, storyboards for The Avengers, and a TON of other stuff. Such talent!
you shouldn't call it talent, you should compliment him more specifically. How did his art get to you? What touches you? That would help him enjoy his work even more. Say he made some amazing and beautiful things. Just saying he is a talent puts pressure on him. In his eyes it's normal to make something beautiful and enjoy doing that. Let him be human.
I don't think U-turn was trying to be a troll, he meant talent only gets you so far ... what's more impressive is the tens of thousands of hours that Ryan has put in over the years to be able to create something as beautiful as this. I mean it's just a little weird complimenting talent since it's something you're born with. Not that I really care about those small specifics... just wanted to back up U-turn since he was made out to be a troll for sharing his opinion.
I remember watching this 12 years ago three days after it came out on RUclips. I was 18 in high school, and it was so beautiful, so emotional. I always pondered about life from this... And here I am, 30, married, with two children and ever so happy with where life has brought me. And I still find myself coming back to this video that has forever captured my heart. It's still so beautiful....

I love how there are so many different interpretations and so many have a much darker feel for the male protagonist. I’m sure my interpretation has varied since the last time I watch it as well as the next time I watch it. Right now, where I’m at, I see a person who has spent a chunk of their life chasing another, loving a soul that will not let him, dancing around and away, portrayed as a ghost. The person slowly loses more and more of themself to this entity, giving and giving and never receiving, until they are a hollow empty shell of who they used to be. But that’s when the “ghost” chooses to become tangible, to connect, to finally give but it’s too late. They waited too long and took advantage of how much the other had been giving. And they finally return, only for the other to finally walk away. Either way it is so beautifully heartbreaking.
Oh, my. Personally, I wouldn't say the ghost was solely the cause of hurt, unless I misunderstood you doing that. The guy was giving her energy (in the first hug before she collapsed as water) and arose drenched by her image. The same thing was shortly after when he woke up lazily with flailing, long arms (which could be some sort of messiness, I assume) which he threw away to then fall apart, and appear as hollow giving him reason to further glorify the girl (giving her wings).

I remember watching this for the first time many years ago and crying like a baby. Now, many years later, I watch it again and only cry even harder because now I know exactly how it feels. This is still one of the most beautiful and most painful things I have ever seen. I have never seen another animation that evoked so much emotion. Thank you. Despite the tears.

The moment they both were standing facing each other, their hands touched, they became One ~ The reflection of himself scared him off aka made him turned his own light off ~ for it was all of him who he saw. Basically he still need some more time to work on himself. Her light only got dimmed for she will Rise for she’s the light In all darkness⭐️Gratitude
10 years late to the party, but dang this is good! My interpretation: A man falls in love with a woman he believes is too good for him. He continues to dream about her, not knowing what to do and not realizing that she's been falling for him. When she finally opens to him, he turns her down in his own fear that it's too good to be true and feeling not good enough for her, leaving both parties in heartbreak by situation.

There is no one at fault or anything - they both seems scared or hesitant to some extent and full of love for one another, just at a loss about how to make real what they feel inside and want to share and give to each other. I see a shift in determination; it is a constant toing and froing, with electricity/chemistry happening between them when their fingers and bodies touch. He tries to get a hold of her, not realising she is always dancing around him, in everything he does and, vice versa, all her dancing centers around him. She gets wings, but... from where...? Did his loving presence help her to grow them...? Incredibly beautiful, indeed.
I'm taking the video more literally for my interpretation. It seems like two very different people meet, having a strong attraction for each other. The guy is, however, planted with his life where as the girl is a free spirit. Always coming and going. Coming back for a bit to see him, then going away again. The guy doesn't want her to go though. When she sprouts wings, aiming to take off again, he grabs her and pulls her back. The cycle just continues till the day she finally decides to stay. But, the guy knows better, feeling she'll take off again and no longer wants to put his time and energy into a free spirit. So he leaves.

My interpretation was he was in love with the thought of her. He imagined how well they would go together. Maybe they were already friends, hung out, talked, etc. He chased after a girl that played hard to get, but when he finally caught her he discovered she wasn't who he imagined she'd be. This resulted in a break up or them never getting together. The girl might of also realized her feelings, stopped playing hard to get, but by that point the guy was over her.
This poor man is grieving and recalls the magic he had with his partner. Sometimes when we lose someone we never quite get over it but a part of them lives in us forever through the good times and the fond memories we have of them.
its like he was sad and he met this girl and she was strong free and confident. then he fell in love with her. but she kinda strung him along. after awhile though she began to like him too. soon she became dependent on him, in a way she gave up her freedom? and then he realized he only wanted her because he couldn't have her. and left her in the same miserable state he was in when this all started

Watching in 2020, with my girl of 28 years still together, I got through her near death 10 years ago, she got through mine 5 years ago. This represents, to me the dream of love and loss and hope. We love each other with no bounds and a wonderful little boy. All joined on the madly spinning world,....together
He’s just lost his relationship. He’s woken up the very next day, and, as the lyrics go, “Woke up and wished that I was dead, with an aching in my head, I lay motionless in bed.” He’s heartbroken and depressed. He’s thinking of her, and how wonderful their relationship was, and how wonderful she was. She was pure and innocent, as represented by the idealised innocence of the colour white. His thought of her (“Thought of You”) is currently a completely idealised thought of her and how the relationship was, and he’s filled with regret over losing such a valuable relationship. He’s blaming himself. As the lyrics go, “Everything that I said I'd do, like make the world brand new, and take the time for you. I just got lost and slept right through the dawn…” He slept right through his relationship. He’s slept through what was meant to mark the beginning of his happiness: the “dawn”. He’s filled with regret, heartache, pain, and sorrow. He’s metaphorically black inside, but, in the video, he’s literally black inside. He’s carrying all of these negative thoughts inside himself. The world is spinning madly on - everyone else is moving on, but he hasn’t moved on - and he continues to lay motionless in bed. Throughout the video, she keeps falling away. She keeps disappearing. He doesn’t want to let her go - he doesn’t want these positive memories to fade away. As was the case in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Jim Carrey’s character was trapped in a science-fiction prison of his memories. When they tried to erase those positive memories of him and Kate Winslet’s character, Jim Carrey’s character didn’t want to let those memories go. when they meet she's a free spirit - possibly unsure of what she wants as she is constantly changing form in a way the guy isn't. and, loving her, the guy chases her and chases her and when he finally managed to ground her, make her more solid, and make her want to stay with him, she's lost what he had loved about her in the first place.
I think that my favorite moment is when he’s laying down and she gets up and has wings and is about to fly away but he pulls her back down and she turns into feathers. Kinda makes me think that she wanted to be some one and he didn’t want her to be that person and by trying to keep him close he lost her. And I’m the end she gave up her dream to be with him but he didn’t want her anymore.
For me, when she gets wings, its her trying to leave him again, and he wants her to stay, but in the end she leaves anyway with only her memories (feathers) to comfort him as he falls sleep alone.
KBug Banks5 nah she was playing him from the beginning and stole his color. That’s why she starts off as an outline and ends in color while he started full and ended an empty outline. She played with his heart and drained him. Once she was ready to stop playing games he already realized who she really was and moved on leaving her in her own consequences
I have always interpreted this video and this song differently than everyone else has. I don’t think she’s left him, I think she’s dead. And every time he feels close she vanishes almost like a dream . I understand this feeling quite well as I lost my husband. I think the premise of the video is wanting to hold on to something that is already gone so finally meeting the courage to let go and Man is that hardest thing whether your spouse dies or your relationship had ended. She has a white outline and sometimes takes on a figure almost if a ghost. As well as the wings that appeared
I was inclined to the same, but the ending reveals her to be corporeal and for him to walk away, leaving her in sorrow. I changed my interpretation to be him remembering the different stages & experiences of their relationship before finally separating and going his own way at the end.
I too lost my husband two years ago this past October and have tried dating since..I’m now trying to see how I feel about a new man I starting seeing a few months ago, but am still grieving the loss. Since everyone is sharing their interpretations, I thought I'd share mine as well. It is based on my own life experience. I once fell in love with a girl who lives in a distant state. The love was mutual. Such love! I could not see her. Never had. We both had been picturing the moment we touched hands for the first time for 3 long years before we actually did that. We struggled a lot. I was 16, she was 15. Pure, innocent love. I was a student, didn't have a job, couldn't travel. She couldn't come either. Neither her parents liked me. We continued keeping contact. Every day. Writing to one another, singing and growing in love. I wanted her. More than anything in my life. She wanted me. We dreamed about each other. However distance was in our way. 3 years had passed and I was 19. Got myself a job, saved up and finally traveled to meet her. Finally saw her. Finally felt her breath. Finally held her hands, touched her face, sang with her. Finally kissed her. Oh, what a kiss. Everything was perfect until... I had to come back. Breaking her heart and breaking mine as well.
I love the fluidity of the animation. It's like the characters are made out of water or something. Also the story I interpreted was something like a guy who tried to get a girl who was just so hard to get she seemed ethereal. But when she finally gave him a chance, he had already given up and moved on. She realized what she had lost and broke down. That's sad.
My impression of the story was something similar but instead of a guy trying to get a gal so hard to get that he gave up and moved on, it was that he elevated her to such an impossible ideal that when they were finally together he finally saw her as a flesh and blood human being that didn’t live up to this magical goddess he imagined and realized he was in love with the idea of her and not the real her.
When I watched this for the first time in 2011 I felt immediately in love with everything: the story, the animation style, the choreography, the song. Now 10 years later and nothing has changed, I still believe this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. And now it's even better because it brings all the memories from that time I lived in Porto, where everything was new, I was young and this song would be my lullaby to remind me of a dear one that went far away.

My interpretation: The video is about a guy in love with a girl, a girl who never outwardly reciprocates his emotions. He repeatedly imagines her. She dances around his thoughts as a ghostly figure, always just out of his reach. One can tell that she is not real and merely a figment of his daydreams because she has no shadow and isn't drawn with shading; another indicator is her abstract and metaphysical movements. However, by the end of the video the man loses his shadow and she becomes the shaded one. We are now witnessing her thoughts and fears. The reason she never lets him in is because she is scared he will leave or reject her, as symbolized by him walking away in her imagination.
notice the changes in the strength and depth of the colours and lines, and how he starts off full and solid. as the video progresses he weakens (as seen by the lines becoming thinner and depth inexistent). by the end his energy is lost due to the days and nights chasing her. when she finally is there... he is too weak, faded and walks away. but he didn't want to fucking walk away it was the month after fucking month after fucking month of CHASING AND WANTING AND NOW SHES FUCKING HERE BUT ITS TOO LATE AND THE FEELING IS GONE AND EVERY CONVERSATION IS A FUCKING FIGHT AND DISAGREEMENT AND HE WISHES HIS OBSESSION COULD BE FUCKING MANIFESTED IN REALITY BUT IT NEVER COULD BE AND 2 YEARS COMES TO NOTHING AND ITS GONE AND ITS DONE AND YOU CAN KEEP TRYING TO MAKE IT FUCKING WORK BUT ITS DONE. That's not how I interpreted it. The beauty of art is that it touches each person differently, based on their life experiences, etc.. How I interpreted it was, the guy was in love with the girl and chasing her, while she always had one foot out of the door (never fully committed to him). In the end, she changes her mind and wants to be with him, but by then he has moved on to a better life.
This has lived in my head rent free since the day i saw it a few days after it was posted. It's beautiful and haunting and something that I think is gonna stick with me the rest of my life.
This thing--everything about it--the music, the animation (ESPECIALLY the animation) and the message I interpret from it just makes me cry, every time. For me, it hits home. I feel like its a story of a man who wants so much to be with this woman but she's playing hard-to-get, in a way. He keeps trying and trying but his attempts fail and I think at the end she casts away her ghostly "free spirit" and finally comes "down to earth" to be with him but it's too late, he's given up and moved on. This is somewhat synonymous to what I've done in the past, unfortunately.

She just doesn't realize what's on stake while playing around with me, and I'll get bored of this game by the time she wakes up. Can't wait for the moment tho, it will hurt badly, but briefly.. I think it's a story about a man who is chasing a dream, and once he understands that the woman in front of him is a human being just like him, he loses interests and leaves her. Makes me cry everytime I see it too.
i thought it was more about her trying to turn him whitr but at the end when she lets him turn her dark he goes away or holding down i saw a comment abiut how everytime he reaches out to grab her she disappears but stays when he dances alongside her being which could also be seen as her not wanting a commitment while he does or maybe about him wanting her when she acts as a free-spirit but when she stops to be with him he understands he only wanted her because of the way she acted before
Interpretation #903: It is never from the man's perspective. All of the sequences shown are illusions and dreams the girl has of her love missing and struggling to cope without her. Each time she imagines herself being perfect for him (hence the divine whiteness and grace of herr dancing) and though he struggles to keep up, she wants the dance (relationship) to be worth it in the end despite the difficulty. However, the reality is he doesnt see the worth in it and leaves like a dream to her with his lines being more simplistic. In the end she realizes her flaws in stark contrast to the smooth white lines of her imagination...beautiful shit here to have so many theories about one gorgeous animation ^^
For anyone curious which interpretation is more accurate... (they are all valid and personal.) I believe it's all revealed in the shadows not the dance. At the start he had heavy shadows, showing that he was really there and involved. She had no shadows, not even a cast shadow at her feet. Then as tIme goes on and she leaves him over and over, his shadows flicker and return, flicker and return, untill she leaves him for the Final time and all his shadows fade away showing that he is no longer really investing anymore. She returns but his shadows are still gone, all he has left is the faded cast shadow at his feet. When finally her bright figure turns into a real shadowed form, if you watch even his last shadow the one cast below him fades and he walks away right after as nothing but lines. Finally giving up. People seam to think he wasn't real, or he wasn't really in love with her only in love with the thought of her but I think the shadows tell the real storry. He was there and she wasn't, and he continued to be there untill she disappointed him into oblivion. Then when she finally decides to be there, he walks away partially in fear that she'll once again leave and also I think because he knows he no longer can be there. And to continue would leave her the same way she left him, with one person involved and the other only made of lines.
Looking to see if I was the only one who saw it this way... I interpreted it as he was always there trying but she was just here and there coming and going whenever she pleased and he always forgave her... But when she finally decided to take it serious... He was already too broken and left (or scared to try anymore)
When I looked at the shadow. I thought he kept absorbing the life of her light until she had no more left to give and when she didn't he didn't want her anymore. But no matter how much light she had it would never fill the pit of darkness in him. Another more realistic way of seeing it was that she was a women full of ambition and drive and even though she loved him she wanted to chase her dreams. But because he continuously begged her to stay she kept staying. Slowly those dreams died and she decided to stay for good and give up on them. But he realised what he really loved about her was her drive and now that it's gone he no longer wants her.
Celestial vision exactly. Everyone’s trying to make the man the bad guy as usual but it’s deeper then that. She drained him of his detail and left him as an empty outline. Only then did he realize and move on. And she is left to her consequences

This magnificent piece of art hits so hard, that it's almost scary... What if I turn down the person whom I've always dearly loved and worshiped, when she finally opens her heart to me? What if I can't love her in the same way, when I see her imperfections? Even the thought of it freaks me out...
Then you don’t really love her. At the moment you come to know this you must let her go, she deserves to find the one who will really and truly and wholly love her.
If you can't love her imperfections, you don't truly love her. Don't break her heart thinking you might be able to, only to realize that you can't once she's become vulnerable and opened up.
it’s post relationship memories. there is only ever one shadow, one person at any given time. we follow the man’s thoughts, his bitter sweet memories, his longing, and his heartbreak. at the end we're left with the woman thinking of him also; a beautiful sadness. two people, who were in love, now separate, miss each other, and think of each other.

I love your interpretation of this. I love it how everyone sees something a different, a different backstory, a different tale to tell. I see someone clinging to a hope and thought so much so powerfully that it becomes real after countless times of slipping through his fingers and when it finally becomes real he realizes after all that desperate clinging, it's not what he wants. Your interpretation is so great. I can tell you're a really smart person.
If you listen to the lyrics while watching the animation, the meaning, in my understanding, comes quite clear. He is remember when he used to have her, and spends his time reminiscing on the bittersweet memories of them together. But, as the song says, "the wold spins madly on." He finally goes on with his life, and leaves the memories, the girl in white, behind.
This and “High Hopes” By Kodaline is what it feels like to truly lose someone. And it’s just how ... “ (and) the world keeps spinning” . Those two will always be my old favourite songs, they got me through some dark years where I’d have to play them over and over dealing w/ my grief.

So a feeling of complete ecstasy occurs in which we recognise as love. If this happens to you, just dance, flow with the music and let it take you on a voyage so wonderfully intrinsic it can only be experienced and explored spontaneously. The cosmic energy expressed through the love of two human beings is indescribable. Love will take you to places so beautiful that any attempt to use words to describe what you are feeling will do it no justice. After watching his "making-of" I see this in a different light. He talks about how he was having to travel a lot for work and was missing his family a lot. The idea came to him while listening to this song on a flight. I see this now as a long a long distance relationship. Throughout this they are constantly getting close but neither are fully there except for brief moments. The ending to me makes me think of how it must feel to finally get to be truly together only to have to turn around and leave again.
Man, this is a masterpiece, I can't express how amazing it was and it is. When I watched it 12 years ago it moved me so deeply and I couldn't even understand why. It has the same effect 12 years later, now with 40, more knowledge more maturity I can understand why as well. It thouches the unknow, the contemplation of the unknow, the contemplation of loss, of separation. The real art comunicates with your soul, not even with your emotions, it is deeper much deeper than emotions. Thank you for this.
You want something so bad and you spend all your time idealizing it and making it up to be this perfect thing until you have it and realize that it isn't what you hoped. This leaves you and the other person feeling somewhat broken. As fickle and optimistic creatures, we as humans never truly learn and always seek for what we feel is beyond our control. It is both our salvation and damnation.

I was so full of life when we met and he was full of problems and darkness. I stuck with him throughout all of his bad days and would've stayed till the end of time. He left me because he "didn't want to hurt me anymore" . Now I'm still healing and trying to find my old self again. I turned to the darkness he was escaping from and he ran away. This piece describes everything so well for me.
I've never been driven to tears by such a short animation from youtube...but the amount of effort and love and passion that was put into this video is so inspiring....this is absolutely stunning. I would give you a standing ovation if I could, this is completely underrated art.
I love how people relate to this song in different ways. For me, it's all to do with my ex. He suffers from sever depression, sometimes spends a day or two in bed not able to leave. He often made promises to "take the time for [me]" but a lot of the time nothing came of it. I still tried, and he said I helped him and made him happy, I was one of the two or three people he could be relaxed around, but as I got closer to understanding him, emotionally he grew more distant, till one day he apologized and left. And I was the girl in the animation left curled up, crying alone.
i forget if i've commented before, but this video was a huge inspiration to me when i first saw it. i was in middle school, and only just starting to take drawing seriously. for months after i saw this video, i drew nothing but those dancers.

maybe its because of my own personal experience, that im going through right now, but here's what i interpret: the man is in depression because he is in love with the girl, but lost her. she left him to go off and do her own thing, whatever that may be. the girl is seen as a memory, and the dance is all of the happy times they shared together. she keeps running away and vanishing because thats what she did in real life, and the memories mimic this. they come and go in agonizing waves of joy and pain. in the end, she comes back to him, and for a moment everything is real again. but the man has been too hurt by her to go back, so he leaves to move on and start over again, despite how painful it is. and the girl realizes she has made a terrible mistake by leaving him in the first place, and will now experience the same pain he did

After reading through several interpretations of the video, what I find really amazing about it is that it seems to fit everyone’s views. Somehow this video illustrates a myriad of situations where people experience longing, heartbreak, and/or disillusionment. I think it is just trying to capture those feelings without any background story, but by doing so it becomes a really powerful piece since those feelings are so universal
I remember coming across this song in 2010, when it had under 100k views and it just caught me. I was going through horrible things in my life at that time and I just listened to this song and watched the video along over and over. And now, a few years later, I find this again in 2014 and it's still as beautiful even if it brings out my worst memories.

Cobracobrachialis I can hardly agree with the first one and the second seems a bit far fetched. If I *had* to make one I would say based solely on the ending and lyrics that he thought of her / hoped for her so much that she eventually materialised / came into his life. And as with everything in a human's life, once he obtained her, he went looking for something else as the dream was what mattered to him, not reality. But I also find there is not enough elements to say that for sure and I can find many other ones that would fit nearly as well. Making it pointless in my view to look for interpretations. I only see this great work as a magnificent dance drawn by a very talented and imaginative person that had little to express besides that.
There's something I find so beautiful about rough animation. I don't know how to put it into words, but as an artist it's just something I find so awesome. Being able to see the different lines people place in certain spots for different things, and seeing how it all just flows together. So awesome.

you know, in the middle I thought she was dead, then I realized she was a free spirit who never stayed, and that broke his heart. Maybe she deserved another chance, but then, maybe she didn't. I love this video because they don't have faces, they could be anyone, and this allows us to see what speaks to the heart and reveal the hurts that are hiding within.
obviously, this piece is about a guy who is in love with a girl he doesn't know very well. He thinks she is perfect; she becomes like his dream girl. He wants her so badly, and one day he gets her. But as he looks more closely at her, he realizes she is not his dream girl. She has flaws, wrinkles, imperfections. He loses interest. He leaves. He is the nice guy who kept getting used by the hot girl and finally leaves. And she is the sweet girl who finally fell in love only to realize he did not love her but a dream.
Outstanding Animation. My interpretation of this video is that: This man was dating somebody but she kept slipping out of his fingers. Every time she would always came back and they would start over. But in the end (when she turns black) he sees her true colours and discovers that he only liked the idea of her, so he walks away.
Love this interpretation! The best thing about this film despite its technical genius and flow is that it can be interpreted to whatever emotion the viewer is feeling. Such a great animation!
This is such a powerful and beautiful video. I think it really shows that he’s not in love with her but just the idea of her. And once she did open up to him, and becomes “real” that’s when he suddenly loses interest. It’s a beautiful but sad message of how she opened herself up and then got treated like her love was nothing because he was bored of her and she wasn’t what he wanted. The girl is definitely the victim.

My interpretation was that he saw an idea. He saw her as some mystical angel that will free him from whatever despair and sadness he's living through but... Once he met who she was... A human, a person, a person with her own flaws, a person just like him, the fantasy was broken and he left because he couldn't deal with that reality... Leaving her

The video depicts a man trapped in a sorrowful state of heart and mind, and the childish girl who dances in and out of his heart (the cage, also representing his feelings). The VIDEO is about someone taking someone's love for granted, and relegating it to an accessory for "living their best life", like love is some sort of game. The lesson is, love and partnership is a serious, mature thing and that you shouldnt take something so incredible and vulnerable to be a joke. This particular video we are commenting on actually shows the consequences for that immature individual. They lose the person that cared about them the most. Play shit games, get shit prizes.
to me it felt like at first the man was so in love with this woman but she was too carefree. He wishes he was like her and wishes to be with her and contain her but he could not. In her times of recklessness he was there to catch her but she was her own woman and continues ignoring him. So he realizes that the only way for her to be happy is to be her free self so he slowly lets go of her. suddenly she notices him and realizes that he was always there for her but it was too late and the world spins madly on... I Love this video and notice the shadows. When the woman bursts out of his hands the force made the man loose his own shadow until he rolls and gains it back. In the last part the man slowly the man seems to be a shell of his former self and looses his shadow and in the last part the woman gains her shadow but it was too late.
Back some years later. And NOW, I feel like this piece is really about loving the idea of someone rather than loving the person themselves. This animation is timeless and incredibly open-ended. One of the best examples of art for this reason, I think.
I watched the love of my life die a few days ago, held his hand until his heart stopped and he took his last breath, at age 36 after a way too short battle against cancer. I feel so lost, I remembered this song suddenly and I searched for it and finally found it... "The world spins madly on" and yet I am stuck, frozen in time, looking around the flat at all the traces he left behind, as if he could walk through the door any second. So many decisions to make, so many things to do, people expect you to deal with so much, the world truly does spin madly on, but I can't move I'm paralyzed.
Love is a wonderful thing regardless of the circumstances and what happens afterwards... This animation tells a different story for each of us. For me, it tells a tale within my past. At first I thought I was the guy in the video, but soon realized that I relate to the girl so much more..A story of love, where I was able to brighten someone else's world for a short time. We were together for a long time before we decided to share a dance within the stories of our lives. A flicker of light whenever we sparked. I was like the sun and they were like the moon. So, I came to brighten their day. But, the sun must set once it has risen therefore; I left only to promise that I would rise once again. A long space kept us away, yet love knows no distance. An endless flame burned within my soul, that holy fire, I promised to stay someday. Time past us by til that one-day finally arrived. Little did I know that there was a dark side to my moon. Soon a solar minimum would be my state of being. When I said I would stay, they decided to run away. Now a ghost, the dance only lives on in my memories. It’s the beautiful memories of her that still haunts him, and he finally decided to let go and move on. We create our own prisons with our mind. He held on to the “thought of her” and he finally learned to let go.
My interpretation: The man was always depressed inside but never wanted to show it whenever he was with her. The woman is white, light happy, free and full of life and is willing to help him and care and look after him. However, he doesn't feel loved, not even by her. So instead of coming clean and telling her about what he feels, he instead uses her and tries to capture her attention then later on passes the depression onto her making her dull and dark like him.

8 years ago I went to a another country (which I have never been before) to study animation while watching this piece again and again on plane. With the hope that maybe one day I can make something just 1/10 as good as this one, I often come back and rewatch this animation when there are obstacles. Years later I became an motion graphic designer in the Television Services, losing my passionate towards creative works completely and quitted. And today here I am again, starting my own art channel and trying to find my passionate like I once did. Just wanna say thank you for creating this piece which became one of my core memory.
This has been in my mind for years. I think I watched when in when it first came out. I've thought about it over through the years. So glad I found it again. It's a beautiful, sad story.
I think if there was a story, the man was in love, but they broke up, so he has that weight, or grief on his shoulders with the darker shading. Then he meets a new woman, and he falls in love with her. She kept manipulating him however. He kept getting dragged down by her manipulations, thus the dragging arms and legs. She was ready to meet new people, to leave him and fly away, but the guy kept her with him, and he realized after that he could move on, thus the lighter lines, which I think symbolize a weight off his shoulders. The woman falls truly in love with him, ( the darker shading ) but he's moved on, and breaks up with her. She realizes what she did, what could have been, or how they would've been perfect, but she's lost him, so she falls down in sadness. That's only my interpretation, keep in mind I'm not that good at interpreting things like this, so yeah
Flora Fauna my interpretation was that the man was in love with the girl, while she was uncatchable and mysterious, but since she became normal, he doesn't love her anymore.
Wow, this video is a work of art! My interpretation of the story is a little whimsical compared to everyone else's.... I think the woman, with how differently and fluidly she's drawn, represents his idea of the perfect love. And that idea helps him grow, and learn to be free, but it's only an idea- something insubstantial. Then, in the last moments of the video, the girl becomes more structured and the man fades to sketches- just like she was his idea of perfect love, out there somewhere, she's a real person and he is her idea of the same. But because neither of them know the other really exists, it's bittersweet....
I found this 5 years ago, when I was studying animation. And it's hard to think that it was 5 years ago. This animation and song and narrative within it, has lived rent free in my head ever since I first saw it.
A real masterpiece. Almost 6000 comments and it inspires every one of us. Then it must be extremely touching and universally felt and it is. My interpretation: She was his lover, and she ended their relationship. He spends his days missing and fantasizing about having her, and whenever it feels closer to being real, she disappears, because she isn't really there at all. He's missing her, aching for her, constantly being left by her over and over again in the entire song. He remembers what it was like to sleep next to her, hold her close, etc. Then, at the end, she comes back. And it's really her. She wants HIM back. And after dancing with her for a bit, he realizes that he deserves better. And he walks away. And she realizes just what she has lost.
My interpretation: A man is isolated and has trouble connecting. He dreams of sharing his life with another, but when the opportunity finally becomes a possibility he is so lost in himself and his solitude that he cannot escape it.
As first time I watched this Animation, I understand nothing, my teacher said I should watch this again 3 when I grow up. Now I'm here crying. It's reminds me of "right person, wrong time" like the female character is just a free spirit, always gone for awhile and the male person has to wait because he loves her until he gave it to waiting, so when she's back and want to settle down, he just not sure about his feelings anymore and leave. I remember watching this 12 years ago three days after it came out on RUclips. I was 18 in high school, and it was so beautiful, so emotional. I always pondered about life from this... And here I am, 30, married, with two children and ever so happy with where life has brought me. And I still find myself coming back to this video that has forever captured my heart. It's still so beautiful....

I love how there are so many different interpretations and so many have a much darker feel for the male protagonist. I’m sure my interpretation has varied since the last time I watch it as well as the next time I watch it. Right now, where I’m at, I see a person who has spent a chunk of their life chasing another, loving a soul that will not let him, dancing around and away, portrayed as a ghost. The person slowly loses more and more of themself to this entity, giving and giving and never receiving, until they are a hollow empty shell of who they used to be. But that’s when the “ghost” chooses to become tangible, to connect, to finally give but it’s too late. They waited too long and took advantage of how much the other had been giving. And they finally return, only for the other to finally walk away.
Either way it is so beautifully heartbreaking.
Oh, my. Personally, I wouldn't say the ghost was solely the cause of hurt, unless I misunderstood you doing that. The guy was giving her energy (in the first hug before she collapsed as water) and arose drenched by her image. The same thing was shortly after when he woke up lazily with flailing, long arms (which could be some sort of messiness, I assume) which he threw away to then fall apart, and appear as hollow giving him reason to further glorify the girl (giving her wings).

I remember watching this for the first time many years ago and crying like a baby. Now, many years later, I watch it again and only cry even harder because now I know exactly how it feels. My interpretation: A man falls in love with a woman he believes is too good for him. He continues to dream about her, not knowing what to do and not realizing that she's been falling for him. When she finally opens to him, he turns her down in his own fear that it's too good to be true and feeling not good enough for her, leaving both parties in heartbreak by situation.

There is no one at fault or anything - they both seems scared or hesitant to some extent and full of love for one another, just at a loss about how to make real what they feel inside and want to share and give to each other. I see a shift in determination; it is a constant toing and froing, with electricity/chemistry happening between them when their fingers and bodies touch. I'm taking the video more literally for my interpretation.
It seems like two very different people meet, having a strong attraction for each other. The guy is, however, planted with his life where as the girl is a free spirit. Always coming and going. Coming back for a bit to see him, then going away again. The guy doesn't want her to go though. When she sprouts wings, aiming to take off again, he grabs her and pulls her back. The cycle just continues till the day she finally decides to stay. But, the guy knows better, feeling she'll take off again and no longer wants to put his time and energy into a free spirit. So he leaves.

My interpretation was he was in love with the thought of her. He imagined how well they would go together. Maybe they were already friends, hung out, talked, etc. He chased after a girl that played hard to get, but when he finally caught her he discovered she wasn't who he imagined she'd be. This resulted in a break up or them never getting together.
The girl might of also realized her feelings, stopped playing hard to get, but by that point the guy was over her.

He’s just lost his relationship. He’s woken up the very next day, and, as the lyrics go, “Woke up and wished that I was dead, with an aching in my head, I lay motionless in bed.” He’s heartbroken and depressed. He’s thinking of her, and how wonderful their relationship was, and how wonderful she was. She was pure and innocent, as represented by the idealised innocence of the colour white. His thought of her (“Thought of You”) is currently a completely idealised thought of her and how the relationship was, and he’s filled with regret over losing such a valuable relationship.
He’s blaming himself. As the lyrics go, “Everything that I said I'd do, like make the world brand new, and take the time for you. I just got lost and slept right through the dawn…” He slept right through his relationship. He’s slept through what was meant to mark the beginning of his happiness: the “dawn”. He’s filled with regret, heartache, pain, and sorrow. He’s metaphorically black inside, but, in the video, he’s literally black inside. He’s carrying all of these negative thoughts inside himself. The world is spinning madly on - everyone else is moving on, but he hasn’t moved on - and he continues to lay motionless in bed.
Throughout the video, she keeps falling away. She keeps disappearing. He doesn’t want to let her go - he doesn’t want these positive memories to fade away. I think that my favorite moment is when he’s laying down and she gets up and has wings and is about to fly away but he pulls her back down and she turns into feathers. Kinda makes me think that she wanted to be some one and he didn’t want her to be that person and by trying to keep him close he lost her. And I’m the end she gave up her dream to be with him but he didn’t want her anymore.
For me, when she gets wings, its her trying to leave him again, and he wants her to stay, but in the end she leaves anyway with only her memories (feathers) to comfort him as he falls sleep alone.

I was inclined to the same, but the ending reveals her to be corporeal and for him to walk away, leaving her in sorrow. I changed my interpretation to be him remembering the different stages & experiences of their relationship before finally separating and going his own way at the end.

Since everyone is sharing their interpretations, I thought I'd share mine as well. It is based on my own life experience. I once fell in love with a girl who lives in a distant state. The love was mutual. Such love! I could not see her. Never had. We both had been picturing the moment we touched hands for the first time for 3 long years before we actually did that. We struggled a lot. I was 16, she was 15. Pure, innocent love. I was a student, didn't have a job, couldn't travel. She couldn't come either. Neither her parents liked me. We continued keeping contact. Every day. Writing to one another, singing and growing in love. I wanted her. More than anything in my life. She wanted me. We dreamed about each other. However distance was in our way. 3 years had passed and I was 19. Got myself a job, saved up and finally traveled to meet her. Finally saw her. Finally felt her breath. Finally held her hands, touched her face, sang with her. Finally kissed her. Oh, what a kiss. Everything was perfect until... I had to come back. Breaking her heart and breaking mine as well.

My impression of the story was something similar but instead of a guy trying to get a gal so hard to get that he gave up and moved on, it was that he elevated her to such an impossible ideal that when they were finally together he finally saw her as a flesh and blood human being that didn’t live up to this magical goddess he imagined and realized he was in love with the idea of her and not the real her.
When I watched this for the first time in 2011 I felt immediately in love with everything: the story, the animation style, the choreography, the song.
Now 10 years later and nothing has changed, I still believe this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. And now it's even better because it brings all the memories from that time I lived in Porto, where everything was new, I was young and this song would be my lullaby to remind me of a dear one that went far away.

My interpretation:
The video is about a guy in love with a girl, a girl who never outwardly reciprocates his emotions. He repeatedly imagines her. She dances around his thoughts as a ghostly figure, always just out of his reach. One can tell that she is not real and merely a figment of his daydreams because she has no shadow and isn't drawn with shading; another indicator is her abstract and metaphysical movements. However, by the end of the video the man loses his shadow and she becomes the shaded one. We are now witnessing her thoughts and fears. The reason she never lets him in is because she is scared he will leave or reject her, as symbolized by him walking away in her imagination.

That's not how I interpreted it. The beauty of art is that it touches each person differently, based on their life experiences, etc..
How I interpreted it was, the guy was in love with the girl and chasing her, while she always had one foot out of the door (never fully committed to him). In the end, she changes her mind and wants to be with him, but by then he has moved on to a better life.

Interpretation #903: It is never from the man's perspective. All of the sequences shown are illusions and dreams the girl has of her love missing and struggling to cope without her. Each time she imagines herself being perfect for him (hence the divine whiteness and grace of herr dancing) and though he struggles to keep up, she wants the dance (relationship) to be worth it in the end despite the difficulty. However, the reality is he doesnt see the worth in it and leaves like a dream to her with his lines being more simplistic. For anyone curious which interpretation is more accurate... (they are all valid and personal.) I believe it's all revealed in the shadows not the dance. At the start he had heavy shadows, showing that he was really there and involved. She had no shadows, not even a cast shadow at her feet. Then as tIme goes on and she leaves him over and over, his shadows flicker and return, flicker and return, untill she leaves him for the Final time and all his shadows fade away showing that he is no longer really investing anymore. She returns but his shadows are still gone, all he has left is the faded cast shadow at his feet. When finally her bright figure turns into a real shadowed form, if you watch even his last shadow the one cast below him fades and he walks away right after as nothing but lines. Finally giving up.
People seam to think he wasn't real, or he wasn't really in love with her only in love with the thought of her but I think the shadows tell the real storry. He was there and she wasn't, and he continued to be there untill she disappointed him into oblivion. Then when she finally decides to be there, he walks away partially in fear that she'll once again leave and also I think because he knows he no longer can be there. And to continue would leave her the same way she left him, with one person involved and the other only made of lines.

I interpreted it as he was always there trying but she was just here and there coming and going whenever she pleased and he always forgave her... But when she finally decided to take it serious... He was already too broken and left (or scared to try anymore)
When I looked at the shadow. I thought he kept absorbing the life of her light until she had no more left to give and when she didn't he didn't want her anymore. But no matter how much light she had it would never fill the pit of darkness in him. Another more realistic way of seeing it was that she was a women full of ambition and drive and even though she loved him she wanted to chase her dreams. But because he continuously begged her to stay she kept staying. Slowly those dreams died and she decided to stay for good and give up on them. But he realised what he really loved about her was her drive and now that it's gone he no longer wants her.

If you listen to the lyrics while watching the animation, the meaning, in my understanding, comes quite clear. He is remember when he used to have her, and spends his time reminiscing on the bittersweet memories of them together. But, as the song says, "the wold spins madly on." He finally goes on with his life, and leaves the memories, the girl in white, behind.
This and “High Hopes” By Kodaline is what it feels like to truly lose someone. And it’s just how ... “ (and) the world keeps spinning” . Those two will always be my old favourite songs, they got me through some dark years where I’d have to play them over and over dealing w/ my grief.

You interlock fingers and feel the way they move, two forms of energy dancing together to a drum beat of vibrations in which existence is in a consistent state of. So a feeling of complete ecstasy occurs in which we recognise as love. If this happens to you, just dance, flow with the music and let it take you on a voyage so wonderfully intrinsic it can only be experienced and explored spontaneously. The cosmic energy expressed through the love of two human beings is indescribable. Love will take you to places so beautiful that any attempt to use words to describe what you are feeling will do it no justice. It is of a divine experience, a universal feeling of completion for you have found yourself in someone else; even death cannot silence it. Poetry seems to be the closest humans have come to expressing love through the use of words and still it is not strong enough to contain this powerful force and bring it down to a level in which we can use one of our man made tools, such as language to convey its meaning. And as you dance to music, the song has different patterns and rhythms in which express different sounds, some more pleasing than the other, but it is still part of the same song. Therefore like love, you will have parts in which it surely seems like the love has changed but that's just part of the same song, and there's nothing you should do except to just continue dancing. After watching his "making-of" I see this in a different light. He talks about how he was having to travel a lot for work and was missing his family a lot. The idea came to him while listening to this song on a flight. I see this now as a long a long distance relationship. Throughout this they are constantly getting close but neither are fully there except for brief moments. The ending to me makes me think of how it must feel to finally get to be truly together only to have to turn around and leave again.
Man, this is a masterpiece, I can't express how amazing it was and it is. When I watched it 12 years ago it moved me so deeply and I couldn't even understand why. It has the same effect 12 years later, now with 40, more knowledge more maturity I can understand why as well.
It thouches the unknow, the contemplation of the unknow, the contemplation of loss, of separation. The real art comunicates with your soul, not even with your emotions, it is deeper much deeper than emotions.

I was so full of life when we met and he was full of problems and darkness. I stuck with him throughout all of his bad days and would've stayed till the end of time. He left me because he "didn't want to hurt me anymore" . Now I'm still healing and trying to find my old self again. I turned to the darkness he was escaping from and he ran away. This piece describes everything so well for me.

I've never been driven to tears by such a short animation from youtube...but the amount of effort and love and passion that was put into this video is so inspiring....this is absolutely stunning. I would give you a standing ovation if I could, this is completely underrated art.
I love how people relate to this song in different ways. For me, it's all to do with my ex. He suffers from sever depression, sometimes spends a day or two in bed not able to leave. He often made promises to "take the time for [me]" but a lot of the time nothing came of it. I still tried, and he said I helped him and made him happy, I was one of the two or three people he could be relaxed around, but as I got closer to understanding him, emotionally he grew more distant, till one day he apologized and left. And I was the girl in the animation left curled up, crying alone.
i forget if i've commented before, but this video was a huge inspiration to me when i first saw it. i was in middle school, and only just starting to take drawing seriously. for months after i saw this video, i drew nothing but those dancers.

maybe its because of my own personal experience, that im going through right now, but here's what i interpret: the man is in depression because he is in love with the girl, but lost her. she left him to go off and do her own thing, whatever that may be. the girl is seen as a memory, and the dance is all of the happy times they shared together. she keeps running away and vanishing because thats what she did in real life, and the memories mimic this. they come and go in agonizing waves of joy and pain. in the end, she comes back to him, and for a moment everything is real again. but the man has been too hurt by her to go back, so he leaves to move on and start over again, despite how painful it is. and the girl realizes she has made a terrible mistake by leaving him in the first place, and will now experience the same pain he did

After reading through several interpretations of the video, what I find really amazing about it is that it seems to fit everyone’s views. Somehow this video illustrates a myriad of situations where people experience longing, heartbreak, and/or disillusionment. I think it is just trying to capture those feelings without any background story, but by doing so it becomes a really powerful piece since those feelings are so universal

Myself I see it as death, as tragic moments have left me alone minus long distant friends. So right though.
I remember coming across this song in 2010, when it had under 100k views and it just caught me. I was going through horrible things in my life at that time and I just listened to this song and watched the video along over and over. And now, a few years later, I find this again in 2014 and it's still as beautiful even if it brings out my worst memories.

This makes me want to tear up searching the meaning in watching it over and over again. :/ Feels like some past relationships for me. I have felt like I only ruin people’s lives. It’s a lie but sometimes it feels that way.

I can hardly agree with the first one and the second seems a bit far fetched.
If I *had* to make one I would say based solely on the ending and lyrics that he thought of her / hoped for her so much that she eventually materialised / came into his life. And as with everything in a human's life, once he obtained her, he went looking for something else as the dream was what mattered to him, not reality. But I also find there is not enough elements to say that for sure and I can find many other ones that would fit nearly as well. Making it pointless in my view to look for interpretations.
I only see this great work as a magnificent dance drawn by a very talented and imaginative person that had little to express besides that.
There's something I find so beautiful about rough animation. I don't know how to put it into words, but as an artist it's just something I find so awesome. Being able to see the different lines people place in certain spots for different things, and seeing how it all just flows together. So awesome.

you know, in the middle I thought she was dead, then I realized she was a free spirit who never stayed, and that broke his heart. Maybe she deserved another chance, but then, maybe she didn't. I love this video because they don't have faces, they could be anyone, and this allows us to see what speaks to the heart and reveal the hurts that are hiding within.
obviously, this piece is about a guy who is in love with a girl he doesn't know very well. He thinks she is perfect; she becomes like his dream girl. He wants her so badly, and one day he gets her. But as he looks more closely at her, he realizes she is not his dream girl. She has flaws, wrinkles, imperfections. He loses interest. He leaves. He is the nice guy who kept getting used by the hot girl and finally leaves. And she is the sweet girl who finally fell in love only to realize he did not love her but a dream.

My interpretation of this video is that: This man was dating somebody but she kept slipping out of his fingers. Every time she would always came back and they would start over. But in the end (when she turns black) he sees her true colours and discovers that he only liked the idea of her, so he walks away.
Love this interpretation! The best thing about this film despite its technical genius and flow is that it can be interpreted to whatever emotion the viewer is feeling. Such a great animation!

This is such a powerful and beautiful video. I think it really shows that he’s not in love with her but just the idea of her. And once she did open up to him, and becomes “real” that’s when he suddenly loses interest. It’s a beautiful but sad message of how she opened herself up and then got treated like her love was nothing because he was bored of her and she wasn’t what he wanted. The girl is definitely the victim.
Its been 10 years and this is still my favorite video that exists on RUclips. I come back and watch it every now and then to restore my faith in humanity, to see what new interpretations people have commented. It's like I found a genuine little corner of RUclips and it must be preserved at all costs.

My interpretation was that he saw an idea. He saw her as some mystical angel that will free him from whatever despair and sadness he's living through but... Once he met who she was... A human, a person, a person with her own flaws, a person just like him, the fantasy was broken and he left because he couldn't deal with that reality... Leaving her

@@sufibren4885 Like i said, the VIDEO. Its the director's own take on the lyrics, whether or not thats what Sia had intended. The video depicts a man trapped in a sorrowful state of heart and mind, and the childish girl who dances in and out of his heart (the cage, also representing his feelings). The VIDEO is about someone taking someone's love for granted, and relegating it to an accessory for "living their best life", like love is some sort of game.
The lesson is, love and partnership is a serious, mature thing and that you shouldnt take something so incredible and vulnerable to be a joke.
This particular video we are commenting on actually shows the consequences for that immature individual. They lose the person that cared about them the most. Play shit games, get shit prizes.
to me it felt like at first the man was so in love with this woman but she was too carefree. He wishes he was like her and wishes to be with her and contain her but he could not. In her times of recklessness he was there to catch her but she was her own woman and continues ignoring him. So he realizes that the only way for her to be happy is to be her free self so he slowly lets go of her. suddenly she notices him and realizes that he was always there for her but it was too late and the world spins madly on... I Love this video and notice the shadows. When the woman bursts out of his hands the force made the man loose his own shadow until he rolls and gains it back. In the last part the man slowly the man seems to be a shell of his former self and looses his shadow and in the last part the woman gains her shadow but it was too late.
Back some years later. And NOW, I feel like this piece is really about loving the idea of someone rather than loving the person themselves. This animation is timeless and incredibly open-ended. One of the best examples of art for this reason, I think.
I watched the love of my life die a few days ago, held his hand until his heart stopped and he took his last breath, at age 36 after a way too short battle against cancer. I feel so lost, I remembered this song suddenly and I searched for it and finally found it... "The world spins madly on" and yet I am stuck, frozen in time, looking around the flat at all the traces he left behind, as if he could walk through the door any second.
So many decisions to make, so many things to do, people expect you to deal with so much, the world truly does spin madly on, but I can't move I'm paralyzed.
Love is a wonderful thing regardless of the circumstances and what happens afterwards...
This animation tells a different story for each of us. For me, it tells a tale within my past. At first I thought I was the guy in the video, but soon realized that I relate to the girl so much more..A story of love, where I was able to brighten someone else's world for a short time. We were together for a long time before we decided to share a dance within the stories of our lives.
A flicker of light whenever we sparked. I was like the sun and they were like the moon. So, I came to brighten their day. But, the sun must set once it has risen therefore; I left only to promise that I would rise once again. A long space kept us away, yet love knows no distance. An endless flame burned within my soul, that holy fire, I promised to stay someday. Time past us by til that one-day finally arrived. Little did I know that there was a dark side to my moon. Soon a solar minimum would be my state of being. When I said I would stay, they decided to run away. Now a ghost, the dance only lives on in my memories. I wished them well and my light shines on for the rest of the world, but every now and then, I do miss that time when my sunshine brightened the face of that moon.

This is one of the best dance animations I've seen in my life. Probably the best I've seen so far.
I love the part where she grows wings
My interpretation: The man was always depressed inside but never wanted to show it whenever he was with her. The woman is white, light happy, free and full of life and is willing to help him and care and look after him. However, he doesn't feel loved, not even by her. So instead of coming clean and telling her about what he feels, he instead uses her and tries to capture her attention then later on passes the depression onto her making her dull and dark like him.
This is similar to what I thought as well.

8 years ago I went to a another country (which I have never been before) to study animation while watching this piece again and again on plane. With the hope that maybe one day I can make something just 1/10 as good as this one, I often come back and rewatch this animation when there are obstacles.
Years later I became an motion graphic designer in the Television Services, losing my passionate towards creative works completely and quitted. And today here I am again, starting my own art channel and trying to find my passionate like I once did. Just wanna say thank you for creating this piece which became one of my core memory.
This has been in my mind for years. I think I watched when in when it first came out. I've thought about it over through the years. So glad I found it again. It's a beautiful, sad story.
I think if there was a story, the man was in love, but they broke up, so he has that weight, or grief on his shoulders with the darker shading. Then he meets a new woman, and he falls in love with her. She kept manipulating him however. He kept getting dragged down by her manipulations, thus the dragging arms and legs. She was ready to meet new people, to leave him and fly away, but the guy kept her with him, and he realized after that he could move on, thus the lighter lines, which I think symbolize a weight off his shoulders. The woman falls truly in love with him, ( the darker shading ) but he's moved on, and breaks up with her. She realizes what she did, what could have been, or how they would've been perfect, but she's lost him, so she falls down in sadness. That's only my interpretation, keep in mind I'm not that good at interpreting things like this, so yeah

Wow, this video is a work of art! My interpretation of the story is a little whimsical compared to everyone else's.... I think the woman, with how differently and fluidly she's drawn, represents his idea of the perfect love. And that idea helps him grow, and learn to be free, but it's only an idea- something insubstantial. Then, in the last moments of the video, the girl becomes more structured and the man fades to sketches- just like she was his idea of perfect love, out there somewhere, she's a real person and he is her idea of the same. But because neither of them know the other really exists, it's bittersweet....
I found this 5 years ago, when I was studying animation. And it's hard to think that it was 5 years ago. This animation and song and narrative within it, has lived rent free in my head ever since I first saw it.
A real masterpiece. Almost 6000 comments and it inspires every one of us. Then it must be extremely touching and universally felt and it is. In some way we can all relate because it's about the great issues of human existence: loving and leaving, fantasy and reality, masculine and feminine, happiness and pain and so much more.

Every time I come back to this, it speaks to me in a different way. It's been a few years but having recently lost my dad, it made me cry.
The ending says it all he walked away and shattered her. A bittersweet beautiful song and great animation.
My interpretation: She was his lover, and she ended their relationship. He spends his days missing and fantasizing about having her, and whenever it feels closer to being real, she disappears, because she isn't really there at all. He's missing her, aching for her, constantly being left by her over and over again in the entire song. He remembers what it was like to sleep next to her, hold her close, etc. Then, at the end, she comes back. And it's really her. She wants HIM back. And after dancing with her for a bit, he realizes that he deserves better. And he walks away. And she realizes just what she has lost.

My interpretation: A man is isolated and has trouble connecting. He dreams of sharing his life with another, but when the opportunity finally becomes a possibility he is so lost in himself and his solitude that he cannot escape it.
As first time I watched this Animation, I understand nothing, my teacher said I should watch this again 3 when I grow up. Now I'm here crying.
It's reminds me of "right person, wrong time" like the female character is just a free spirit, always gone for awhile and the male person has to wait because he loves her until he gave it to waiting, so when she's back and want to settle down, he just not sure about his feelings anymore and leave. (That's what I thought)
