Bugatti presented the model in 1930. It expanded the range as a sporty variant of the Type 46.
The vehicle has the eight-cylinder in-line engine typical of Bugatti cars of that time. 86 mm bore and 107 mm stroke result in 4972 cm³ displacement. The crankshaft is mounted in nine plain bearings. Instead of the three-valve technology previously used by Bugatti, each cylinder has only one intake valve and one exhaust valve. In addition, the DOHC valve control with two overhead camshafts was new for Bugatti. In some details, the engine is similar to those of the Harry A. Miller Manufacturing Company. A Roots compressor ensures more power. The standard version produces 225 hp. The engine is water-cooled.
