I really liked video. I believe I am a decendant of the Cornovii and take an interest in the tribe. I have visited most of their Hill forts and feel a special affinity when I visit The Wrekin. Pronounced as The Reekin. Sadly there is little known about them as they were not creators of arts or weapons. Probably cattle and sheep farmers.
Living a couple of miles from the Wrekin and having walked up it a few hundred times you can see why the Cornovii made it their capital. A relatively flat landscape besides the hill itself. With views supposedly of 17 counties. No one was going to sneak up on you without knowing.
Far as I can make out the Cornovii from Cornwall and Scotland may have originated from the Midlands (Shropshire) Cornovii. Cornwall may have even taken it's name from them, keeping it short and sweet, the Midland Cornovii from Viroconium Cornoviorum (Wroxeter) integrated quite well with the Romans and as good warriors they earnt the oddity of having the only civitas in Roman Britain mentioned in the Notitia Dignitatum "Tribunus cohortis primae Cornoviorum, Ponte Aeli." (Tribune of the first corps of Cornovii, Ponte Aeli.). The Ponte Aeli hints at them being stationed at Hadrian's Wall (Newcastle). I wonder if some went off and established the Scottish Cornovii. It is thought after Hadrian's Wall, the Chors went to where is now Cornwall to help the Britons fight the Irish and gave their name to Cornwall (Cornovii of the Wall) because they came from the wall. I am from Wroxeter (well close enough) that I've been fascinated by the Cornovii since a kid as they've certainly left their mark on the surrounding area with not so much the Wrekin apart from the barrows, but Wroxeter, Old Oswestry, Llanymynech, Titterstone Clee, and others. It's also locally thought that the legendary King Arthur was from the Midland Cornovii tribe and he's supposed to be buried just outside Baschurch with Excalibur close in the now drained marshlands.
My Miwok people in California were divided by region and were isolated from each other geographically. There are Lake, Coast and Valley as well as Sierra (My people) branches. The languages aren't quite the same while many other aspects are. The "Fortress of Lugh" channel has a good vid addressing whether or not the Irish and Welsh were Celts. I don't mind the longer format.
Do you believe that possibly the deity Cernunnos lent the name to the Cornovii Tribe as most tribes in Europe and the world gained their tribal names from possible ancestors and people claiming to be descendants of patron god's and goddesses, such as the Yngling dynasty from Scandinavia etc.
i have always thought the Cornovii were named because they worshipped cernunos the horned god. also there are plenty of deer on Cannock chase where castle ring where one of their hill forts is, also i have often wondered if the Abbots Bromley horn dance has any connections to the tribe as it is supposidly one of the oldest traditional dances that is still performed annually.
great video, thanks for posting it ! I live in Chester, and according to Ptolemy the cornovii were the resident tribe here when the Romans moved in. it's a shame there's very little artifacts from these people though, like you say, only a few bits of pottery really, nothing major. From what I gather the only significat find is the tombstone of that Cornovii woman who married a Roman centurian, but the stone is done in a Roman style and doesn't tell us much about the Cornovii designs really.
The Cornovii name came from their worship of the horned God Cernunnos. The Wrekin Hill was the capital of the tribe and their lands stretched from Powys to Chester. Wrekin has no C in the name. it's pronounced Ree-kin, not Wreck-in. It wasn't called the Wrekin in those times, and it's ashame he didn't talk about the were-wolf connection
I have been researching the cornovii for 3h straight trying to find the name of a single God they worshipped, and nothing No mention in the whole of Google of a single pre-roman God worshipped in nottinghamshire
I do believe the cornish and Cornovii of midlands are connected but I am purely basing it off of my family history which probably is a stupid reason since immigration.
Celtic names are a bit of a learning curve for sure but they sound so beautiful when you get them right I love the city of Alesia that is a beautiful name or Owain Glyn Dŵr that is a name the commands respect. And this goes for Gaelic names too not just Brythonic such as Saoirse meaning freedom and Brú na Bóinne. so many beautiful things.
We need more Celtic history spreed 💜

Just came here to say this 😅

Thanks for the video. As a local to the Wrekin I can confirm that it is pronounced Reak-in and not Wreck-in
Another great vid and content👍👍, I really liked the sampling. Go Nerd World!
Ah, thanks for this .. I'm sure I requested this tribe a while ago. Many thanks !

Sounds possible

The Cornovii land extended to the Wirral peninsula....horn. There is a horn on the Wirral badge.
Have you done any research on the Corieltauvi or Coritani tribe in the East Midlands area?
Thanks. Im bad with the names but i remember the history,
Welsh Morgan here, supposedly originated with the Cornovii
The Cornovii name came from their worship of the horned God Cernunnos. The Wrekin Hill was the capital of the tribe and their lands stretched from Powys to Chester.
Wrekin has no C in the name. it's pronounced Ree-kin, not Wreck-in. It wasn't called the Wrekin in those times, and it's ashame he didn't talk about the were-wolf connection
Their land incorporated the Wirral...a peninsula.
I think there are direct crossover from mainland I think the cimmerians inhabit Cymru, and Scythians, Scotland!
Curnow here ✊

Gov, Subscribed, bad spelling and all

There was a tribe in Cornwall called the cornovii
