Another video already? We’re getting spoiled!!!
Ooh seriously tho
Riiiiggghhht❤
Dude, eventhough they lowkey suckedd..you still made a ✨️Masterpiece✨️ Genuinely, you have to be one of the best artists of our time. I follow countless artists and amongst all of their amazing work you have the most unique style✨️✨️ Thank you for always blessing my eyes..🥲👍✨️
He always does! Even with crap supplies!!
What I came to say! LOL
So bad, you didn't even do the "scratchy scratch", screeches. 💀
Interesting. This is the second video in as many weeks from an artist who was disappointed in the Van Gogh line. Shame because there aren't that many open stock professional level oil pastels out there. And I appreciate your thoughts about overconsumption and too many choices etc... You might not have enjoyed using these but the final piece was wonderful.
If you're looking for a lovely to use oil pastel, I'd recommend Caran D'ache's Neopastels :) They sell them both in sets and as individual colours, and the colours are vibrant and they are so smooth and creamy to work with. I didn't like working with oil pastels as a kid, because I found them messy and hard to use, and when I tried out my old set a while ago, I realized that they felt quite sticky as well (which might've been due to them being so old, I'm not sure), and I didn't like the idea of pastels being crumbly as I worked with them, either, but the Caran D'ache ones glide along the paper and are super pigmented and they blend nicely, etc. :)
Sennelier also has super opaque ones
No to overconsumption? Oh he woke woke 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Honestly MOTHER.
The product may suck but the artist is *chef's kiss* Happy Spooky Season!
These were the first (or one of the first) oil pastels I ever got. I didn't know back then that they were "awful",. I hated them, but I thought that all oil pastels must suck as much as Van Gogh's pastels (I assumed Van Gogh was a good brand) But then, thanks to your channel, I got the Mungyo artist pastel, and what a HUGE difference. The Van Gogh pastels leave a ton of crumbs and they don't blend well at all.
I like the VanGogh watercolors, but that's a beast of a different medium. For my Oil Pastel fix, I use Mungyo and Sennelier. Kudos to you for giving the VanGogh Oil Pastels an honest college try.
The yt art consumerism and consumerism in general... they choke me lol horrible
“Smear it out”. Professional technical term. Love your videos and art! 🖼️
BlackBean- your finished painting looks great and the Van Gogh reference in your strokes is right on. Sorry it was a miserable "feel" while you were creating, but the end result by luck and talent, is spot on.
Me watching, hitting the like button immediately after "Imagine my fruity ass walking into Blick's..."
Honestly I use like ten dollar cheapo oil pastels and love them. I’m so tempted by these kinds of fancy boxes but my kids set keeps me honest 😂😂
Your artwork always amazes me
Omg I made video a while ago trying those. Ngl I was frustrated but I persevered and finished the piece .
I totally agree with you tho they did Van Gogh DIRTY
I love the Van Gogh oil pastels. They are light-fast and they give the pigment numbers. I use them for underlayment and go over it with juicer pastels.
I would like something to do with spiders. I love spoods. Spoods are cool.
as difficult as the tool presented … You rocked the challenge! AANDD created content. Well done, you! Your skill shines!
I love your face! You’re such a cutie! Thank you for the videos! ❤ I’d like to see what a jack-o’-lantern or a creepy witch in your art style would look like! I love all your movie themed art too! It’s so cool to see how you blend and layer oil pastels!
the art always hits even if the supplies don’t 😍
i'm not an oil pastel user, but as a watercolour painter I can say that Van Gogh brand is....not great quality. Like their watercolours are passable enough, but their pigments tended to be a little dull and muddy. When I was working as a sales assistant in an art shop I tended to steer people away from them because I found you were often paying professional quality prices for student quality products (and tbh there are better and cheaper student quality products on the market anyway)
This is so true but for some reason between like 2020 and 2022 I constantly saw people saying they were like professional grade paints even though they were notttttt
I guess it depends where you live. In my country (not the Netherlands, so it's still imported) Van Gogh is cheaper than W&N Cotman and I find it higher quality. Cotman has a lower pigment load than Van Gogh. Never had issues with dull and muddy colors in single-pigment paints. I started buying the professional Rembrandt range and honestly the difference is not as big as I expected. Cotman vs W&N Professional have a larger gap in quality.
@@kreativna I don't like the Cotman range either. I bought my first bunch of Sennelier paints after using those for a couple of years and the difference was huge to me. Like the Cotman range itself had really clear and vibrant colors, but the pigments were just too weak, they would be overpowered by a single glob of professional grade paint and I had to scrub at the pans just to get any color out of them.
In general for watercolors I would not tell beginners to waste their time with student grade paints and low quality paper, even if it's really good for student grade. Just get the real thing
Yes!! I work in an art supply store and I try to steer customers away from the Van Gogh brand paints because there are better student grade options out there. I think our Gamblin oil paints are actually cheaper than their Van Gogh counterparts, too. Of course by “steer away” I mean “speak more enthusiastically about other products” lmao
Gamblin 1980* I meant student grade vs student grade hehehe
Would love to see more sculpting from you
Even with poor materials you still manage to produce art work that is amazing.
I enjoyed this video because it was funny, entertaining, and you were so brutally honest in your critique of these pastels - it's such a refreshing change to hear someone who doesn't say "With a little work you can produce amazing results !"
when what they mean is it will take you twice as long because the product is just so cr@ppy but the don't have the ●●'s to say it, but you are honest and leave no room for misinterpretation. Great video.
Have you tried Koh-i-noor Gioconda oil pastels? They're veery pigmented and super super oily, they're my favourites....
Despite the inadequacies of the medium, the resultant piece was beautiful!
Van Gogh is like, my favorite artist. I really love the way you imitated his style. I absolutely love your videos, thanks so much for sharing them!!!!!
I would LOVE to see you use yourself as the model in a picture inspired by "Ophelia". You are so expressive and it could be so interesting.
The way they sell these in my country like they're THE MOST high end, classy, expensive asf cratons tho......
Even though you said the pastels sucked...you STILL ATE and made yet another masterpiece! 🎨🖌🖼
YES MORE REVIEWS !!! I will buy pastels for you to review!
Have you tried and reviewed Caran D'ache Neopastel oil pastels? They are my favorite, along with Mungyo. 🖍
Personally, as a mix media artist i love these pastels! They're so dry that I can get all the textures I need
Thanks for the honesty ! The piece turned out really well despite the crap product ! Agree 100% about art haul videos that are excessive .
A super skilled artist is able to make use of the most terrible art supplies and still make something amazing out of it! Always great artsy. ✨️
That's still pretty good considering the pastels are no good
‘Being too overwhelmed and not doing anything in the end’ ohh that hit home hard!
even with shit materials your art is excellent!
it's a whole vibe drawing with your videos on
Okay but the final piece... ❤❤❤
I am so thrilled to be first! Let's do this!
Your videos never get old!!!
YAYY Another vid 🙈💗
Hiiii I luv uuuu smmmmm💓
I feel the same way about the Van Gogh watercolors. This is a huge pet peeve for me as a teacher because approachable (i.e., inexpensive) art supplies are what the beginner student will be looking for. If the product is frustrating to use, that is a recipe for turning students away from creativity in a heap of frustration.
Love this review. Your artwork is still beautiful. Would love to see you do that same piece in your favorite oil pastel and put Dracula makeup and a cape on. 🧛🏾🧛🏾♂️
I feel like we have pretty much the same taste for oil pastels. I also didn`t like the Faber Castells and the Van Gogh. My absolute favorite are the Mungyo Gallery. ❤
Van Gogh is the student grade line art materials by TALENS. At least it was when I was a student in the early nineties.😅😮 The portrait is gorgeous tho. Will you do it again with better materials?
That was no sale.
i seen some selling for 20 or 30 dollars so 11 is good
Ey! I wonder, can you compare the Faber Castell oil pastels that you reviewed previously with the black edition one? And also, can you focus reviewing the black edition one? Thanks!
There are worse ones that these. My local supplier of Sakura oil pastels stopped carrying them and got a different brand. Meh. These are not too bad and I can get open stock otherwise I am buying a bunch of bog standard oil pastels just to get the white and black. I did get the "giant" Senneliers too. The whites and blacks go very quickly. Tend to work better on the pastel paper like the Art Spectrum pack I get for customs or to use for life drawing for the 20 minute poses (known as the 'Melbourne standard' 2 x 5min, 2 x 10min, 20min, break, 2 x 20). I also massively gear change during life drawing between media and surfaces.
You always have my favorite classical music (Ravel string quartet for example)! Your videos make my day. 🎉❤
You should try the Hahnemuhle velvet paper for oil pastels, the paper feels like fabric and the colours soak in really well, you would see a big difference than normal paper!!!
You should still review products if you are not being paid by the company otherwise you are just a shill there already enough of those
I love watching you work, but I LOVE hearing your thoughts about process and art and life and what the f ever. THANKS YOU ARE AWESOME
You still made a beautiful drawing!!! Thanks for the honest review! Cheers! 🥰
Que bom sua resenha, já imaginava algo parecido sobre eles. O nome e a marca nos leva a pensar que são maravilhosos, mas a realidade é outra, existem estojos baratos com melhor desempenho e pigmentação.
Whatever the pastels you paint wonderfully. Thanks for being funny
[6:20] As I sit entranced by the glamour shots showing your impeccable blending, captivated by how many colors you used but it never looks muddy.... Me and my eyeballs are here for the artistry in whatever medium you showcase and any feedback you wanna give while making the art. I can see the consumerism in those art haul videos for sure, but maybe, just maybe...somebody out there is actually taking the critiques and fixing what needs to be fixed.
So many art brands have 'stolen' a famous artist name and used it for branding, for inferior products. This one is definitely not the first and it wont be the last.
I'll take any reason for a video from you and watch you be creative!
so relatable (overwhelm, consumption, indecision), but you.... dude!!! you could draw with a stick & ii'd watch & learn something wonderful...
Black bean youre my fav RUclips artist, can you recommend some other youtube artists to check out??
Frankly buddy, I think you could draw with a rock! But I get your frustration. Just because there's a famous name attached, doesn't mean quality. I've used the Van Gogh watercolors and found them lacking, so.....I still like the painting!
ALREADY?! I can’t be dead yet…. 😂hats happening?! Oh joyous day!
I bought the same set when my local Michael's suddenly had the Van Gogh brand of watercolors and oil pastels on sale forv75% off. I paid about $6 for the set. I got the watercolors too for $1 a tube. And a tablet of mixed media paper AND the Rembrandt soft pastel sticks were on sale. All 75% off. The craziest thing is the Van Gogh and Rembrandt lines were never stocked in my local store. It's like they featured them for 2 weeks and when they all sold out the brand was never re-stocked. It was weird. I succumbed to consumerism and now need to use up my supplies......they aren't my favorite. Regardless....your artwork never disappoints!!!!
EEEEEE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEAN!!!THANK YOU FOR GRACING US WITH YOUR PRESENCE!!!
I’m in art school, I HAVE oil pastels and chalk pastels… I just haven’t used them since I was super young. I have always loved how you use them, your colors and textures and I’m coming back to your channel for inspo to try to work up the confidence to use them lmao. I will soon 😭😭😭
Those are the student series, so yeah they aren't the best. I totally agree that they can't use Vincent van Gogh's name. I thought it was a Dutch company, wrong, they are Asien. Vincent wouldn't agree I think😅
STOP SPOILING ME DADDY, I haven’t even given up the goods of likes yet 😂😂❤
Oh, I don't see why you complained so much over these seemingly delicious oil pastels?!? I love how they came out. They could have been absolute bummers, but they weren't. Anyway, Love your channel!!😊
I have the big pack of these, I bought them in sale for 250 kr + shipping that I think around 50 $ , they are not good for making a whole piece of art but layering over watercolor in the sketchbook They are fine for this purpose. I hate them, but I have them now
Omg I just left dick blick!! They had these pastels and some paper out to try, and I did! Very disappointing!!
Great video and great artwork in my opinion! Just wondered what was the music we hear when you're showing the finished artwork?
They just put a Blick store down the street, literally! I was about to go running down the street for $11. Used to dabble, been watching for a while, haven't done a thing in forever; Toni Morrison said an artist with no art form becomes dangerous (mouth like a volcano lately). So... I'm glad I watched and didn't waste my dollars and sense, and, ruin my Blicksperience. ❤ As usual.
Hullo BB, I believe the VanGoth family and the Talens corporation has decided that their line of products are student or hobby grade art supplies, Bummer ! Right? Right! The VanGoth watercolors are a good student grade product, but it is easier to make good or better watercolors than just abut any other art supply.
NOW with all of that said, I thought your portrait was lovely! I have made some jankie artworks with the best supplies and some amazing pieces with student grade supplies! I truly feel it is the Artist not their supplies that determine the level of creative energy that flows into an artwork! I will say one of the BEST portraits I have ever drawn was with a simple graphite pencil! Now years later I do wish I had used better paper, but student work is made on student supplies for a reason. Everyone needs to get those questionable pieces out of the way to make room for that masterpiece! While this is not quite there as far as a masterpiece, it is still a lovely portrait. I was looking about at the different InkTober prompt lists and none have grabbed me in the least! Have you seen anything you might like to try? Maybe you can pick a couple of prompts to give a go at in the next series of videos? Stay safe and be well!
Your work always amazes me! This is particularly incredible considering the quality of the art supply and how much you struggled with them. Love your work.
amazing video king.
movie recs in return: the holy mountain 1973 and the devils 1971
I am mezmerised with the portrait you drew today. Last time I remember, Bristol paper is too smooth though. Maybe I missed out another detail.😅
edit: Nevermind, he used vellum bristol, which has tooth to apply on oil pastels. Maybe he could try Strathmore 500.
What’s your favorite brand of oil pastels then?? If money isn’t a factor?
OMG! ok I can see you not liking some of the properties of the oil pastels, but I really Like that portrait of you!
Your art piece is gorgeous! Your skill really shines through even using these horrible oil pastels.
These are the most accessible/ affordable oil pastels in my country (Netherlands), around here a set of 60 oil pastels goes for about €30,- (33,50 $). I thought the problems with layering was my own skill issue. It was so validating to hear you say even you can't layer them. I was hesitant to order another set as i already have this one and first want to use it up. I did add one Sennelier white oil pastel. And that layers so beautifully. I can finally add white details. Maybe i will order a small set of something else to add after all...
Amazing video Bean!!! As a Color Coatings Scientist, it's hard to get highly pigmented colors and opaqueness without it being costly with the raw ingredients. It really depends of the pigments that are picked for each color and pigment chemistry types. The binders that are used help with the Chromacity of the pigments. However, sometimes other pigments require more binders to get certain color spaces. Chromacity, Particle Size, and Dryness always compete with each other in a pastel.
The Van Gogh only ever really worked for me on Pastelmat and the like. They work ok on that but are too hard and crumbly for normal paper. My faves are Neopastels (and the artist grade Mungyos), for reference. I like them better than Sennelier, and they are firmer… but they are smoooooth. What makes an oil pastel for me is that smoothness. Van Gogh is not that. Fine for underlayers I guess.
Wow it looks really good, I think I prefer dryer pastels but I will never know because I am done with trying everything on the marker and just enjoy things I have. And this things include mostly colored pencils and watercolors and few other mediums here and there to mix with my 2 basics.
please please please do the review of Paul Rubens Haiya oil pastel 😫😫🙏
The painting turned out really pretty. It has a softness to it from the sheerness. I bought a 12 set of these on sale last year and though I don’t remember having issues with the opacity, I didn’t really enjoy them and I haven’t used them since.
I am in awe of your ability to take any media and make something stunning. This was a really great exploration of your Van Gogh style and it definitely works.
I really appreciate your opinion about the quality of the materials you use. It really helps when choosing products for my own art making. Thank you so much not only for your honesty, but for your in depth explanations why you have these opinions. You definitely are one of my very favourite artists. I would love to see you do some more sculptural works. 💜
Yeah, I tried those recently. They suck. I think you’d be really surprised at the art echo brand, their fabulous! And super cheap!
Oh I love 💕 the final artwork piece! It’s really cool with the colors you chose & proportions! I have not tried any sets of oil pastels before & I’m an intermediate artist myself at 60 years old. Your advice about the oil pastels is very helpful but you are definitely too harsh on your critique of the finished artwork. 🥰
I totally agree with your opinion about these oil pastels, you are right in every aspect! They are a pain to work with.
I wanna live like you so bad i hope you the best blackbean , you should try landscape drawing with pastel or whatever you want to draw with ❤❤❤
But I love the drawing the way its more scratchy van Gogh looking.
Yessss! Right on time! Too bad about the pastels but either way you make it look easy. Your painting looks really good even though I can tell you said f*ck it through the middle of it lmao😂 great job as always❤
Easily your most beautiful piece yet, well done. Your voice is so relaxing and soothing. A true artist can still make a masterpiece with crappy art supplies.
I thought the finished result was stunning, what a shame that was not artistic merit but the limitations of the medium, only kidding I love your work!
I agree with you. They are not very good. I use the dark colours only. Light ones are not easy to work with. They don’t create layers at all.
You are pure magic. The way you can take any supply and create a masterpiece. Nothing can out maneuver your talent sir. Amazing as always!
I have a few Van Gogh oil pastels I bought on a whim and I thought they were ok hahahaha but I think it’s because I like working with dull and dry 😅
Have you done a video where you make your own pastels? From scratch?
I love my Crayola oil pastels!
