      Aragorn? This...is Isildur's heir? Gondor has no king. Gondor needs no king!
      Poor, misguided Boromir...may he rest in peace

      My question is...if this line was unknown to gondor...how come when Boromir heard his true name he suddenly went woah....hes my king...nahhhh
      Like by just saying is father they knew his lineage....how?

      No problem, they are actually quite rare. If I get a complaint (also relatively rare in comparison), then it's about the rolled "r" sounds in e.g. Elvish names ^^

    This video is a great summary of the great lines of Elves and Men. I don’t think from watching the movies ppl will realize just how important Aragorn is considering his lineage going back to Numenor. The fact that all of this came from one man, Tolkien, makes me feel like an insect whilst this man created a fictional world so deep and complete with so many dif Gods, races, and languages.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  5 лет назад

      Thank you :) Yes from the movies alone this story and Aragorn's importance is pretty much lost (only hinted). Yes, Tolkien's creation is really impressive. He managed to connect all the stories.
      PS: sorry for the late answer

    So, and this is going to sound strange, but I find that your accent adds a certain amount of of presence or power to your videos. I get the sense that if you spoke Elvish regularly, it would be amazing. Happy to subscribe.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  7 лет назад +11

      Thank you :) That is an interesting thought. I think being from Germany definitely helps with speaking elvish, because it is actually quite similar, when it comes to the pronunciation rules. Ofc the rolled "r" is not part of today's standard German anymore and only a dialect thing right now and we don't have the "th" sounds, which is always a bit difficult for Germans.
      Also thank you for the compliment :D

    • @EmrysMerlin8807
      @EmrysMerlin8807 7 лет назад +7

      ThePhilosophersGames Interesting. I had never considered the similarities between the two I will have to look into it.
      In the mean time, may I make a request? One thing that's always interested me was the making and then changing of the actual landscape of the world. Could you possibly do a video going over some of that and explaining how Middle Earth physically became what it was in the Third Age?

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  7 лет назад +6

      That is a nice idea for a video. I put it on the list. I'm already in production of the next one, I also have at least one other lore topic on my list, that I want to do too. So it could take some time :D
      I think if you look at Old English (Rohan's language is actually Old English), you notice the germanic influences on the English language. E.g. Beowulf, which was a big influence for Tolkien's works:
      ruclips.net/video/CH-_GwoO4xI/видео.html
      Elvish (Sindarin and esp. Quenya) sounds of course different, but the pronunciation rules are very similar, listen to Tolkien himself:

    I hope this long Lord of the Rings lore video isn't boring. There are probably a few mistakes in it, too. Like Arnor's last king's name is Avedui not Avendui. In one text a space is missing and in the war against Angmar part, there are few parts that aren't precise (all this was going on for 550 years and Arvedui drowed before Eärnur arrived). If you have further questions, feel free to ask =) I hope you enjoyed the video.

    holy shit, can you imagine what a movie about the war against morgoth would be like?

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  7 лет назад +15

      It would be epic and like 10 movies. Alone Beren's and Lúthien's story. I just imagine the part were Beren "travels" over the Ered Gorgoroth with all its horros. Or the part where he fights against Morgoth's forces as one of his father's companions until the betrayal of Gorlim. It would be massive.

      @aaronsdavis The book was a children's book with hardly enough content. The battle of 5 armies is just a chapter in the book and bilbo sleeps through all of it. I am really glad that Peter Jackson showed the Dwarves in an epic light, just like the Elves and made the hobbit seem like a part of the same universe as LOTR. The book Hobbit does not even compare to the LOTR novels.

    I found this guy through Men of the West's youtube channel. Very powerful lore history. I like his voice its almost as if he's a scholar from middle earth who's new to the Genre even though he's probably not, good work. I don't really give I shite if there's errors Just hearing about the marvel of the Tolkien Universe is dope, and don't let anyone call you a nerd for finding this fantasy awesome. This author was an masterfully accomplished linguist, wrote 3-4 LANGUAGES! Wrote a complete staple in literature, created the one type of storyline that everyone could enjoy weather your a reader of a movie goer or whatever, Tolkien Is their god in his universe. I am a poet, and I tip my hat to the dead man who lived waay before any of us even existed. That man is gonna go down in history as being the best writer of his age. NUFF SAID!

    Its nice that people from around the world, from different countries, cultures and backgrounds, have an appreciation and passion for this material. Thats the amazing thing about JRR Tolkien's works. Its fitting in this video particularly because it seems like the Numenor story is one of the most fundamentally human in the Legendarium. Of course they were tempted by the idea of immortality. The Valar kind of set them up. Its kind of like putting some humans in a paradisical garden and telling them not to eat the fruit f
    of a particular forbidden tree.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames

    I like Tolkien's description of the Dark Years of Second Age in one of his letters, it summarizes everything vital about Second Age, continental Middle-earth (there's naturally much more :)):
    "But at the beginning of the Second Age he was still beautiful to look at, or could still assume a beautiful visible shape - and was not indeed wholly evil, not unless
    all 'reformers' who want to hurry up with 'reconstruction' and 'reorganization' are wholly evil, even before pride and the lust to exert their will eat them up. But many Elves listened to Sauron. He was still fair in that early time, and his motives and those of the Elves
    seemed to go partly together: the healing of the desolate lands. Sauron found their weak point in suggesting that, helping one another, they could make Western Middle-earth as beautiful as Valinor. It was really a veiled attack on the gods, an incitement to try and make a separate independent paradise. Gil-galad repulsed all such overtures, as also did Elrond. But at Eregion great work began - and the Elves came their nearest to falling to 'magic' and machinery. With the aid of Sauron's lore they made Rings of Power ('power' is an ominous and sinister word in all these tales, except as applied to the gods). Sauron dominates
    all the multiplying hordes of Men that have had no contact with the Elves and so indirectly with the true and Unfallen Valar and gods.
    Thus, as the Second Age draws on, we have a great Kingdom and evil theocracy (for Sauron is also the god of his slaves) growing up in Middle-earth. He rules a growing empire from the great dark tower of Barad-dûr in Mordor, near to the Mountain of Fire, wielding the
    One Ring."
    Near the end of the Second Age the famous War of the Last Alliance happens (the realms in exile Gondor and Arnor were founded near century before that so the cities Minas Ithil Minas Anor and Osgiliath were technically build in Second Age, the realms were founded in year 3320 of the Second Age). The end of that war is also the end of Second Age. After destruction of Sauron's physical form a Third Age officially begins. I also quite like how Tolkien describes Numenor situation during Ar-Pharazon's reign in some less known texts:
    "From Elendil's words at the end of The Lost Road there emerges a sinister picture: the withdrawal of the besotted and aging king from the public view, the unexplained disappearance of people unpopular with the 'government', informers, prisons, torture, secrecy, fear of the night; propaganda in the form of the 'rewriting of history'
    (...); the multiplication of weapons of war, the purpose of which is concealed but guessed at; and behind all the dreadful figure of Sauron, the real power, surveying the whole land from the Mountain of Numenor."
    Naturally the Lost Road 'canonicity' is probably dubious but still it's a nice picture of how it looked like when Sauron was playing around in Numenor.

    I cracked a small smile at about 27:50, when you began talking about Firiel.
    At 28:03, unification of the lines of kings of Arnor and Gondor, the smile started growing.
    Finally, when you added Finarfin a chill when through my body, almost a tear.
    Tolkien weaved an amazing tale of an amazing world, didn't he?!

    I love your presentations... thank you for taking the time to record and upload them. One thing I thought you might have missed (not at the end yet) is that initially women were passed over for the monarchy on Numenore... at some point this changed and the women could step up if they desired it. Aragorn is the descendant of the first child, a daughter of Elros I think, who did not have the opportunity to claim the monarchy. So had they been about equal rights, Aragorn would actually be the rightful King of all the Numenorians.

  • @LeeMitchellAcoustic

    Probably why Tolkien's work is almost so, so incredible..."Tall ships and tall kings three times three....what brought they from the founded lands over the flowing sea....seven stones and seven stars and one white tree...Something like that. thanks for this video; I particularly needed to see the lineages to make the link between the Silmarilion stories and the 3rd Age. It's also nice to learn that Isildur was a sneaky gardener before being corrupted; most of us only know him for the latter trait. (p.s., "built", not "builded")

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  5 лет назад +1

      No problem :) Yes some details can easily get lost. E.g. I learned quite a bit, by editing my videos and marking the events on the map, so I got a really good understanding where things happened. Same with lineages. I hope that i can transport that in my videos too.
      haha yes I know. Several people hinted me that it's "built" :D Interestingly someone also wrote, that originally the past form was "builded", but it changed over time to "built". Still thanks for the hint. Sometimes I don't notice little mistakes like this, because I'm too focused on other things ^^

      No problem. In one of your videos you mention Glorfindel as reincarnated from Gondolin. I totally agree. I also have also reckoned that Legolas is reincarnated from "Legolas Greenleaf of the House of the Tree" who died in the retreat from Gondolin (think he killed a balrog, don't remember). Gandalf calls Legolas "Legolas Greenleaf" which is what makes me think this. You have any thoughts on that? I'd be interested to see what you think.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  6 лет назад

      I think Glorfindel was originally planned to take the role of Legolas, but Tolkien invented Legolas instead. I don't know if there was a connection planned, but Glorfindel also fought in Gondolin. From the perspective of published version they can't be related or the same person, because Thranduil (Legolas' father) was born at the end of the First Age or even in the Second Age. He is quite "young" so to say. It's extremely likely, that his son Legolas from Lord of the Rings was born in the Second Age or even in the Third Age, so it would not fit. However in theory it is possible, since to my knowledge there are only indicators and theories, but no given birth dates of Thranduil and Legolas, but as said it seems unlikely.

    • @frankcairney5523
      @frankcairney5523 6 лет назад

      Yeah, I only thought they might be the same in a reincarnation sense. Pure speculation on my part but as you say, very unlikely. Thanks for replying. BTW I didn't know that Glorfindel was supposed to be Legolas. that's pretty interesting. I always felt that Glorfindel was a bit underused in the books but now I see why, and Legolas is a brilliant character.

    What is truly astonishing and heart-rending is that the entire history of Tolkien's universe, including even his own gravestone, is this massive tale of good and evil, eventual 'victory' and heavy loss. Google his and his beloved wife Edith's grave, and it makes you weep.

      Only one comment on one of the SoM/SoW videos. I agree Celebrimbor should be in HoM. There is one case in Silmarillion when Beren's companions are killed in a terrible way, and one of them appears to Beren as a wraith before he travels south to find Luthien. It would seem that men very rarely are not able to pass beyond the world in some extremely rare and fell cases. This would leave a possibility for Talion to be wraith while, but not for Celebrimbor to be called back from HoM by the servants of Sauron

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  7 лет назад

      Oh yes, Barahir's (and Beren's) companion Gorlim. I mention the story in my new "Who is Sauron?" video and I think in Shadow of Mordor you can find a skull, that references him. This would in deed be a possibility. But I think you could still argue, that Gorlim betrayed Barahir knowingly to Sauron ( and with this helping him), while Talion and Celebrimbor are actively opposing Sauron.
      Gorlim tried to warn Beren out of regret. Maybe he did not go to the Halls of Mandos, because of his regret and trying to warn Beren. It's definitely a strange and grim story, that is also very interesting.
      Good point!

      I agree with you, John. I've read the books numerous times, just for the pleasure of the story, not getting too much into the rest. However, over the years I've, of course, had a few questions about various aspects ;-), just a few, which are getting answered in these amazing, in-depth videos of true-blue LotR scholarly fans! I had a very hard time with The Silmarillion back when it was first available and haven't attempted it again, but I will soon, as well as the other books on Middle Earth from the Tolkeins. I'm almost embarrassed and ashamed to say I haven't read those yet because I Love the stories sooo much from the very first reading of The Hobbit in 1971! Loved the movies, but I was annoyed with some of the changes that were made that were totally unnecessary, even for the sake of drama, but the films were amazing and well-done on so many levels. Just watched all of The Hobbit movies this past week for the first time, too. Wish I'd seen them in the theater (hopefully, they'll have another run some day). A lot of what went on were not in the books, and at least the story of Azog being hot for Thorin's head actually did add a dramatic twist though it wasn't in the book. The little love story between Kili and Tauriel, though, could've been left out, I think, though it's nice to have a little romance in a movie, but Not Here. Tolkein did not write romances, and Peter Jackson took too much liberty with that part, I think. Arwen and Aragorn were one thing, we knew they Loved each other so was fitting to elaborate on that. But Kili and Tauriel's romance is too much (there was no Tauriel in The Hobbit at all, if I remember right, so where did she come from? PJ's mind, apparently). Just MHO.
      Thanks so much to ThePhilosophersGames for making these wonderful videos for us! You are doing an amazing job, please don't stop! :-D

      @@pjwhite1002 Thank you, happy you like them :) You remember correctly. Tauriel was made up for the Hobbit movies and I really agree, it was not needed at all. Also the Azog twist worked well in the films in my opinion too (at least I can understand the change). I have my problems with the Hobbit trilogy, but I must say the Extended Edition adds some nice things and fill some wholes.
      The Simarillion is tough to read, even though it's really interesting and has some amazing stories in it, so I fully understand you ^^

      @@ThePhilosophersGames So you read all the other books of Tolkien? I binge watch the Hobbit and LODR last weekend again, and I have a chat of my co workers who's a fan also and told me that there are many branch of the back story of that franchise so I started to research and saw your channel. Sadly most of his books weren't finish because it was not that famous in his time...

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  5 лет назад

      Yes at some point I red most of them. Some I read more often than others though and because it's so much I also forget details quite often again. Yes I can imagine. The later books (by Tolkien's son Christopher, who published his father drafts and notes in them) are not that well known and can be tough to read, if you don't know the main books (Hobbit, LotR + Appendices and The Silmarillion).
      The Silmarillion (LotR backstory the book) was also published posthumously by Christopher Tolkien, who basically composed it out of his fathers works too and finalized it. It should be available in all kinds of languages (I assume third most popular book). How canon it is, is often debated under Tolkien fans. Same goes for all the published notes. But with all of it, there is a ton of backstory. Translations of the 12 (13) History of Middle-earth books, Unfinished Tales, Letters, Great Tales etc are probably far more limited. I think only two of the 12 History of Middle-earth books even have e.g. a German translation.
      I have a lot of stuff on my channel, but the information density can be very high (e.g. the Who is Sauron or the History of the Elves videos; those cover basically all ages a a lot of lore in case you are interested).

I also red that he was a friend or acquaintance of Lewis who's the creator or Narnia... That's why it felt like even a little, they have the same feels.. Thank you :) Definitely start with Hobbit and LotR (+ Appendices at least Appendix A and B). The Silmarillion can be tough to read, it's a bit like the bible, but you need to know LotR to really understand the Silmarillion. The backstory of it gives LotR a lot more depth. After That I would say Unfinished Tales (and maybe the Great Tales), Letters of Tolkien, maybe Tolkien's LotR related poetry and the History of Middle-earth books last.

I know I would not have been able to do it better. You have done great. Thank you very much for doing this. I for one am very glad of it. Now, on another tip - what's with this whining from some of you about the dude's pronounciation and the way he rolls the r's..? I mean, for one thing he explains that in several vids - he is trying to stay true to how he has understood the way Tolkien himself says to pronounce names. Give the man a break. This is not his first language and you can hear that he struggles a little with certain tongue twists. The little was just referring to the number of Balrogs. Originally in early drafts Morgoth had real armies of Balrogs, but they weren't as powerful. He later changed this to less than a dozen (probably around 7 Balrogs), but made them more powerful. Ofc now one Balrog is like an army, but they are still very few in numbers. I think that was my way ofc phrasing this carefully with out delivering a long explanation.

    I hate how in the movies, all you see of Anarion is a quick flash of him at the battle of the last alliance.....why the film maker chose to focus on Isildur, and completely omit anarion from the story is quite puzzling..... he has a very interesting character back story that I guess couldn’t be developed due to time and budget constraints....;(
    Still, it would have been nice to see him more than once for more than 2 seconds, and get ONE reference from steward denethor II......

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  5 лет назад +1

      I find it interesting too, that we have one reference in the Extended Edition, but he is cut from every other place. It's strange, but I assume it's due to avoiding too many names and time limitations. When they made the prologue, they had originally only 2 minutes at best (actually there should be no prologue at all). And then at the end the shortest they could make it was like 7 minutes and they could barely defend this decision. So it makes sense to cut him out, because their story works without Anárion. To explain the role of this character you need to explain more of the Second Age and the line of the kings, which never really happens. We only know about Denethor II not being King and just ruling until a new King takes the throne of Gondor. By experience I can say: when making film/videos time and structure are always a problem. And not breaking your structure sometimes reinquires sacrifices.

    I wouldn’t describe numenor as being in the “middle” of the ocean as you say.....considering that from its west coast, you could SEE Tol Eressa, which was JUST off the coast of valinor.....so the dunedain were pretty much able to see Valinor from the western province of numenor.....so it was much closer to Valinor, than middle earth I think.

      Good point :) Ofc it's hard to place. I oriented a lot on Karen Wynn Fonstad for my globe sketch and she placed it in the middle. I think the middle is probably the best compromise for it. Also it must be considered, that in the Silmarillion Elves in Aman could see the smoke of the burning ships at Middle-earth's coast. Ofc there is more too it, but as said: it's a compromise.

    From that diagram, if Aragorn comes from the line of Kings of Numenor and that's where you can trace Arwens heritage to as well... Isn't it kind of EEEHH? Granted, over that time the bloodline would surely be diluted enough but it depends on how you want to look at it :P How many generations is that?

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  4 года назад +6

      yes, they are related, but Aragorn is born 6500 years after Elrond. So a lot of generations are between them. Númenor alone had 25 Kings. Gondor 33 and then there was a gap of 1000 years. In addition all those kings live for several hundred years.
      So it's like two persons being directly related 2000 years before the Great Pyramid of Giza was built.

    @ThePhilosophersGame, thank you for another superb LOTR exploration/explanation.
    🙂🌿🌻🌿🙏🌿🌻🌿😊
    Please, could you explain more about who the Witch King of Angmar is? Is that Sauron in another form, by another name? Or is the Witch King a different character entirely, & if so, who is he? Where is he from? What's his back-story, please? This character is quite a mystery to me!
    Thank you again for this deeply researched video about Aragorn & his forebears--I watched it twice today!

      no problem. This was one of my first lore videos I made 4 years ago; time moves fast 😅 Happy you liked it. I have neglected the Nazgûl a bit on my channel. I briefly talk about them in my very detailed book analysis (also book and film differences) series: ruclips.net/video/qe-4l74B8mw/видео.html
      You maybe have to look out for Nazgûl in the title (episodes work mostly as stand alones I think).
      To answer your question briefly:
      We don't know exactly who the Witchking is. Sauron (after he got most the Rings of Power back) gave 9 Rings to lords of Men (from Númenor and maybe one was a King of the Easterlings, but definitely an Easterling), and they got power through the rings too. Over time though they were slowly transformed into Wraith (Ringwraith -> Nazgûl) under the will of Sauron and the One Ring (int his form they are 100% under Sauron's will; they are undead ghosts you could say, that mostly exist in the Unseen). We know only the name of one of them Khamûl (also "the Black Easterling"). He must have been an Easterling (maybe a king).
      The others (three according to the Silamrillion) were likely Númenoreans that resided at Númenorean settlements on Middle-earth (Númenor is an Island where the Dúnedain lived once; they were pretty advanced and it can be compared to Atlantis). They first appeared Second Age 2251 (according to Appendix B in The Lord of the Rings; so roughly 3200 years before the events of LotR). As mentioned only 3 were Númenoreans + at least one Easterling. The remaining 5 could be other lords of Men maybe from the South (Haradrim) or even North (Northmen) or more Easterlings. We don't know.
      Khamûl was among the Ringwraiths 2nd in command. 1st was the Witchking. Who he was we don't know, but most likely a Númenorean from one of the mentioned settlements. The Númenoreans were later separated into 2 factions you could say: The King's Men and the Faithful. The Faithful were as the name suggests faithful to Eru (God) and his High Powers in Aman (Valar) (also friends of the Elves). The King's Men were on the side of the Númenoeran Kings, which over time more and more opposed Eru, the Valar and the Elves, because they were jealous of their immortality (and other things), though traditionally (at the beginning of Númenor's history) Númenor was devoted to Eru and the Valar and close friends with Elves, which helped them develop. (as explained in this video). It's now likely that the Witchking and the other who could have been Númenoran lords were Kings' Men too. We don't know.
      Later when Sauron was defeated at the End of the Second Age (through the Last Alliances) and fled into the far East, the Witchking became active at one point and took himself a realm North of Arnor (which split into 3 separate Kingdoms), which was called Angmar. Angmar assimilated one of them (Rhudaur you can find it on maps) and it basically became part of Angmar too if you want. In the end Arnor was destroyed, but Angmar too. And from this time the Witchking becme the Witchking of Angmar. His name and deeds suggests, that he had some powers (through the Ring of power and Sauron). E.g. he summoned the Barrow wights (weird evil spirits) to infest the Barrow downs, where some of the remainign Lords of Cardolan (once Arnor) hid and with this destroyed Cardolan completely.
      He appears of here and there again. he later conquers Minas Ithil for Sauron, which ten became Minas Morgul and he most likely killed the last King of Gondor Eärnur (challenged him to a duel and the King was never seen again).
      Ofc he was active during The Lord of the Rings too, etc. But that is all we know. I don't have a good theory who he might have been. He was definitely not a name we know from the lore in my opinion. Some lord maybe from Umbar (far to the south of Gondor).

      haha no problem ^^ I really like answering questions, but ofc longer answers can eat some time ^^
      Hint because I did not state that 100% correctly. Only three of the nine Nazgûl are mentioned to be Númenóreans. So the 5 others could be haradrim (men from the far South), Northmen, maybe additional Easterlings, etc. (I have corrected this in the longer answer above)

    So, there is only one Glorfindel? The one one from first age is the same who saved Frodo from Nazguls?

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  7 лет назад

      That's an interesting question. There is some discussion about if those 2 Glorfindel were actually the same person. Originally not, he just burrowed the name when writing Lord of the Rings from his earlier works. But in some unpublished texts, Tolkien later mentions, that Glorfindel got revived and later sent back to Middle-earth.
      Check this article for more:
      tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Glorfindel#Controversy
      I personally would agree, that they are the same person.

      Thanks again :D I thought about this before. But in-depth commentary can be very time consuming in long videos and I'm not good at live production - esp. in English. So playing and commenting at the same time is difficult for me. Maybe I practice a bit at some point or do post commentary. It would need some experimentation. So it won't happen any time soon, sry

    Fenixproductions points out below that Aragorn and Arwen are distant cousins. True enough, so are Galadriel and Elrond and so are Elrond and his wife Celebrian.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  6 лет назад

      Yes, but Elrond and Celeborn are also relatives (the daughter of Celeborn's niece, is Elrond's mother), So Celebrian is the cousin of Elrond's grandfather (Celeborn is the brother of Elrond's great-grandmother) ^^
      The connection to Galadriel is a bit complicated. Elrond's great grandfather is the cousin of Galadriel. Quite innteresting.

    I didn’t know the White Tree had been replanted 3 or 4 different times. But after watching that, it makes sense as to why he was the only one who could unite the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.

    So, monolith game change the lore a little bit. They say that the game Shadow of War will set betwen The Hobbit and the begining of the LOTR. So, they could not show the fall of minas ithil, because this event hapenned long before the borning of Bilbo himself.
    I see and consider this "middle-earth" saga, like a good loocking and well writen fanfic, but we can not consider these games to learn about Tolkien's world.
    Sorry for the english XD

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  7 лет назад +2

      Exactly. Yes, the games are like an alternate universe, but maybe close to the movies. In the Hobbit movies the timeline was also very compressed (all the white council stuff happened over a long time) and some things got changed.
