Friends don't let friends not know about this show.
If you're going to pick locks, you've GOT to know how they work. That's why our giveaway this week is the Build Your Own Padlock Kit. It's one thing to see through a padlock, but when you're the one assembling the springs and pins, you'll have a deep, fundamental understanding of how these locks function.
We've got a Build Your Own Padlock Kit for three lucky winners of this week's giveaway at gimme.scamstuff.com (no purchase necessary, giveaway ends 11/22/2018).
Once again, congrats to the winners of the previous Butterfly Bottle Opener giveaway: Kaden Furr, Ryan Mecklenborg, Andrew Kenny (we will contact you via email within the next two weeks)

Fun story: back when I was a kid, my buddies and I got ahold of a book we'll say. One of the things in that book was how to make a potato cannon. So we went to this alley way behind our houses, found some PVC pipe from construction going on that they were tossing out and an old grill and made our own cannon. The PVC was a bit too wide though and all we could put into it were these grapefruits from a tree growing in this guys backyard. We spent many hours with hairspray just launching grapefruits down the alley.
    good times.

Making PVC cannons here in my country is pretty basic even for kids(before you ask, it's a makeshift firework for holidays as the tradition requires loud noises for celebration). Same set up with yours but, what makes ours more reliable to fire is the fuel we use. we use denatured alcohol about 2 squeeze from a spray bottle sprayed from behind as what you would've done with the hair spray. then hold the middle and swing it like you're shoving air to the muzzle for roughly 3 - 5 seconds. this would make the fuel-air mixture you need, and it would fire 95% of the time. 5% failure rate due to drowning the igniter. Be careful though as it is VERY LOUD, and would highly recommend doing it OUTSIDE with HEARING PROTECTION. Sound differs with the diameter of the pvc used, smaller diameter quieter sound vice-versa.

I noticed that the pneumatic cannon was lees powerful than the propane cannon. I have deduced that this is because the small hose size of the solenoid valve was restricting airflow. In short, that means the air cannot get through the valve fast enough, due to the hole being too small, so the round is not shot with as much force.

    • @jeremyshostak7552
      @jeremyshostak7552 5 лет назад

I think it's more a battle of projectiles. The propane cannon fires a heavier round with rifling that doesn't break apart upon impact.
In the first few shots, it can CLEARLY be seen that the pneumatic cannon fired the potato at a significantly greater velocity, but the impact was lessened as the potato exploded violently upon striking the target.

2:30 Small pipes of the same schedule hold pressure better because hoop stress is proportional to Radius/Wall_Thickness, though this is not done for the reason people think. The reason for added pressure rating is to achieve minimum specified pressure for the schedule, and then meet bending strength requirements. The bending strength requirement is most easily met with thicker walls. Heavy duty cloth reinforced tape is a good idea for wrapping the main tank. Using a second adapter behind the back of the main tank is also a good way to allow for proper tank wrapping by allowing longitudinal wrapping to go over both adapters and loop around them in ways that hold them on. Wrap angle shall be 54.7 degrees for optimal performance per:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressure_vessel#cite_note-17
When you have a back adapter, you don't need reinforcement of the fuel inlet and loading is less error prone and can be made quicker through the use of a bolt seal and crossbolt design. A creative designer could even make the back adapter wider than the barrel, add a long bolt with a spike to the bolt seal and make a breach loading potato cannon.

I threaded it and attached some valves to the inlet for the supply then stuffed some M fucking 16 bolts down it’s 6 foot length along with some packing to minimise windage.
We put a hole in the corrugated steel wall, thing could’ve kill somebody. It was swiftly disassembled and never spoken of again. Only one of several Honda engineering fuck about stories to look fondly back on.

Okay now fuse them together, make it using metal tubing. pressurized air with the fuel using the electric pump, use the solenoid to release the air-fuel mixture into the ignition chamber that is bigger than the shooting barrel in diameter to get a faster shot. Use a car spark plug wired to a trigger for better ignition reliability also it'll last longer. And you got yourself a really dope "potato" Canon.

    Look into hybrid cannons
Which are essential the combination of both designs, whereas a traditional potato cannon uses unpressureized fuel and air, a pneumatic cannon uses pressurized air, a hybrid cannon uses a compressed fuel air mixture

A solenoid is a length wire wound in a helical shape similar to a slinky. Due to natural properties of electromagnetism, when a current is ran through a wire, it creates a perpendicular magnetic field, so a solenoid is essentially an electronic device that creates a magnetic field that can be used to trip a switch. Like a small rod being drawn up the center of a slinky when you run electricity through the slinky. This is also essentially what a transformer/tesla coil does but with induction. You guys need a go-to physicist on MR. :P

Well, actually, you're right. The chemical reaction that takes place is the propane (CH3CH2CH3) react with oxygen gas (O2) in the next reaction:
    CH3CH2CH3(gas) + 5O2(gas) → 3CO2(gas) + 4H2O(gas)
As you can see: at the left of the reaction (unburned fuel) there are 6 particles present. At the right (burned fuel) there are 7 particles present in gas formation. The counting of the ammount of particles in a reaction is *STOICHIOMETRY*
This increase in ammount of particles causes an expansion in volume, and pushes the projectile out...
So, yeah! Jason, you're right. Very clever of you! I'm proud. Good job.

You need to use a larger valve and retap it for a manual trigger. Solenoid valves open more slowly under increasingly higher pressures, due to the plunger having to overcome the increase in pressure. With a manual trigger, the valve opens almost like a butterfly valve and thus more oomph.

  • @brianwyters2150

You should use a larger valve. The solenoid-assisted valve is a chokepoint for the compressed air. Then please use a small projectile with wadding. All the force then gets concentrated on a small spot. This is basically APDS.

I have been subbed here for a LONG time probably since the eary days of the channel since I was subbed to Scam School way back when Brian had insane hair (probably 2011 or so). But this channel embodies so much stuff I love. Making, spy stuff, weapons, con artists, physics, etc... and its hosted by 2 guys that don't even pretend to be smarter than the average joe but they really are quite intelligent. Damn I love this channel the more I think about it.

Ok. This is super late to this video, and no one will see this but i've built a TON of potato cannons and have had a lot of success. Schd 80 is a great idea. But, if you want the simplest cannon that works every damn time make one of these two:
    Combustion cannon:
Chamber: there is an optimal barrel to chamber (C:B) ratio of about 2:3 (slightly under if you want to be a perfectionist ~.60). Ie. the barrel should have a volume of about 2/3rds the total volume of the chamber. A higher ratio will not build as much pressure, and will lose performance, and a lower ratio will not keep enough pressure behind the potato and will cause it to start slowing down while still in the barrel. Use 4" pipe for the chamber because the flame front will move fast and build a higher peak pressure as well as make the overall length more manageable (but 4 to 1.5 reducers are harder to find than 3 to 1.5). You can incorporate a screw fitting between the chamber and barrel to allow changing of barrels.
Barrel: Use 1.5" pipe for potatoes, and 2" for shooting tennis balls. There are also rifled barrels that work *great* for spin stabilizing a potato in flight. Unrifled barrels punt the potatoes out and they will kinda go anywhere. Chamfer the *outside* of the pipe. Not the inside. It will cut better and create a perfect seal. Chamfering the inside will create a tighter seal, but will create more drag down the barrel, and higher(more dangerous) barrel pressures.
Ignition: Use a piezoelectric sparker from a bbq grill for the ignitor. Drill a hole in the cap and jb weld it into place (or tap and thread if available). It's simple, but it works. Advanced options include using a stun gun and screws for constant high-voltage spark. Keeping the sparker in the cap also allows for easy cleaning and unloading if something goes wrong (just ram the potato out backwards)
Fuel: DO NOT USE HAIRSPRAY. It really is not nearly as powerful as other options, and leaves a sticky residue all over everything that will foul your sparking device. Use tag/axe body spray. The propellent is butane, and the solvent is alcohol. It has a VERY wide combustion limit (combusts at a very lean or rich ratio fuel/air) and lots of power. Is it the absolute best/most powerful propellant? No. But it is dead reliable. Spray about 1 second into the chamber until cloudy in the chamber, and screw on the cap. More powerful and waaaaaay more touchy options include starting fluid (ether), but they are not nearly as reliable. The pulse for good combustion is about .1 of a second and is too easy to mess up.
There are better/more powerful options out there, but are much more complex. I may write an addendum later...
    Pneumatic:
Dead simple. Use the same C:B ratio (but undershooting it won't hurt) and add a butterfly valve in between the chamber and barrel. Add a automotive schrader valve in the back of the cap instead of the sparker for allowing pressure in. You can use a bike pump to keep it portable, but a compressor is almost necessary for repeated runs (~5 min charge up time). These are also a bit quieter than a propellant based cannon. The faster you open the valve, the more power you'll apply to the potato.

  • @svenstopke415
    @svenstopke415 4 года назад

I would really like to build one but, here in Germany these are so illegal that you can't legally build one even with a gunlicence which is really hard to get. Until last year you could go around that by blocking the barrel with a pin, bolt or grid so you can't load a projectile IN the barrel. So as replacement you need something like a hollowed out arrow on the end of the barrel. But now those devices are considered a firearm. So I guess the only way to arm up on artillery is a fullauto ballista. Nice Video!

So... Did you thought about making canon based on Tesla valve?
If you don't know what is it, basically it allows fluids (like rocket fuel) flow only one way easily and the other very hard, almost at all. At the same time it has very funky things with flammable gases - ignited from one side it inhibits explosion, ignited from other side can accelerate it quite much

I suspect part of the reason that the first point blank shot didn't work is because there was no vent for the air inside the pumpkin. When you tried to accelerate the round, the pressure built up inside the pumpkin and resisted the pressure accelerating the round, meaning the terminal velocity was lower than normal. The force from the pressure build-up was distributed around the whole inside of the pumpkin, rather than being focused on the point of impact. My guess would be that if you put a vent in near the back of the pumpkin, it would have broken more easily. (Of course, putting the vent in would weaken it too, but whatcha gonna do?!)

So, not to sound negative, but the best potato cannon I built would blow the doors off what you guys have. I had 3 spark plugs wired to a stun gun so I would have constant spark and 3 ignition sources, thus burning the propellant faster. It would throw a potato 1000ft easily, and actually had noticeable recoil. When I shot it at a white pine tree, it ripped the 1" thick bark off where it hit, leaving a bald patch. Lol
