I did the best hike in Smoky Mountain National Park! Alum Cave to Mount LeConte to Myrtle Point

- Hiking to Mount LeConte was the most recommended hike for me in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I went from the Alum Cave Trailhead to the Mount LeConte Lodge, Summit of Mount LeConte then to Myrtle Point.
It was 5.7 miles from Alum Cave trailhead to Myrtle Point. I stoped to get water, rest and stretch for a half hour at Mount LeConte Lodge before Summiting Mount LeConte and continuing on to Myrtle Point. I enjoyed the views at Myrtle Point before returning to my van.
The full 11.4 mile round trip took me 7.5 hours. It can certainly be done faster, but prepare for a long steep hike with plenty of water and snacks. The Mount Le Conte Lodge does provide public vault toilets and a water pump. They have some snacks for sale, but check availability before you go. Some people also spend the night at the Mount LeConte Lodge or Mount LeConte Shelter which I passed but did not show in the video.
This is on the top 10 hikes on All Trails for a reason. I think it is the best hike in Smoky Mountains National Park and certainly one to check out while you're there!

For an added fun hike, next time take the Boulevard Trail down to the Appalachian Trail, turning right (northbound) for less than 2 miles to Charlie’s Bunion.
From there, it’s 4 miles southbound to Newfound Gap, where it’s super easy to get a hitch down to your car at Alum Cave trailhead!
Update: We did this Friday and wow, best hike ever. I've seen so many pictures of the lodge but none of them do it justice. The mountain views were off the chart awesome. I just have to classify it as a mountain paradise. We made good time on the hike, it took 3 hours from the parking lot to the lodge. Also, your video helped us locate the summit. I was surprised that it didn't have a sign at the point, but no doubt that was it, because it was all down from there. Great work with your video!

I am headed to the smokies this late fall and this is the one trail I am dying to go on and will go on!! I cannot wait, those views look amazing from a camera, but imagine it in real life! This will be a record for me because I've only hiked about 10 miles at once before, but I am excited about it!

My Dad made that hike probably in the early 50's, my Brother about 10 years ago, my cousins who live there have been up there many times, but this is the first video I've ever seen of it! It took us 4 hours up and 3 back. Because I am so slow! That was quite a few years ago….. we did do the alum cave trail. It seemed an uphill climb from the very beginning. The boy ( thin teenager) wanted to run and he probably could have! And my husband, who is a road bike cyclist, (extremely fit) could have probably run. But he graciously went slow to stay with me😀 The two of them went on up to the highest point and I stayed , waiting for them, at the lodge.
Absolutely I would do this hike… I would be pushing myself to the max tho but feel very accomplished by time I was done! So much wildlife happenings…especially behind your back! That BIRD! Geezus!

I have been debating doing this in October, the days will be shorter so I worry about it getting dark before I finish, but this really makes me want to go for it!
You should go for it! Certainly have a headlamp and you could even set a turn around time. Like if you don’t summit by 1 then you need to turn around. But start early and you should be all set!
Ok, you inspired me to do this again….I want to go to the top! I LOVE LOVE this with the bird, and deer, and rodent……they are so cool to see!

Loved your video. I did the same hike about 5 weeks ago and enjoyed it. It is a deceptive trail that hides both the hard part and the reward till the end.
It was deceptive! It was nice to have a little stretch that was semi flat near the top but by then you just want to be there! So beautiful at the end though!!
Great video. We did the hike last 7/4. Very tough. A million stories. We remember most a very experienced German hiker who sailed up and down the mountain wearing $5 rubber flip flops, no poles, no water, no backpack. Guessing he got a drink at the top. Well, great job and now subscribed.
I always wonder about the people who just wing it. I'm more comfortable packing for the "just in case" moments even if they do pass me on the way! Thanks for coming along for the ride!

I’m debating doing this with my husband. We did rainbow falls a few years ago and it was hard for us. we went late in the day so rushed up and back down. I’m thinking this was part of the reason it was so hard.
This one is a tough one for sure. Charlie’s bunion might be somewhere in between on difficulty but still give a very similar view!!
yes i would do that hike. i heard about LeConte but the the section with ropes kinda scares me. do you feel that is safe enough? anyways great job getting to submit that was no easy hike
Well I didn't know about the ropes before I got to them so I didn't get a chance to worry about them. They are cables and very secure. There is only one that I was really holding onto because the trail was sloped. I was more appreciative of them on the way down since heights still make my legs a little wobbly, so it was nice to have something to hold.

YOU GO GIRL! It was so beautiful! Kinda scary too on some of those narrow paths. Is this as steep or steeper than Clingmans Dome? How long did the entire hike from start to finish take you? I would love to try this hike but feel like I should probably get in better shape before I do lol. Have fun and be safe out there!
Thanks!! It took me over 7 hours. I was 11.4 miles round trip, and I would bet an hour of that was spent resting/enjoying the view and resting. It would be a great hike to plan as a full day adventure and pack up lunch!

I love it! Perfect number of outlets and charges with just 4 or so hours of driving. I don’t use all of the battery unless I run a fan all night. It isn’t strong enough to run an electric kettle for water to make coffee, but that’s the only thing I don’t like.
Ok am I the only one that saw the double cameo appearance by the bird/hawk when you sat down to take a rest and enjoy the views?

I just took my quart and about half a cup of coffee. I asked hikers on their way down to make sure the water was on at the lodge before hand and filled up there on the way up. I also filled up again after going to the summit and hanging out at the lookout point. I do have the sawyer squeeze for overnight trips. I use it with either a smart water bottle or my cnog bag. Its light weight and works for me
