I'm not a native english speaker and I totally "listen" and understand the difference between MOM and MA'AM in scotish accent, american accent, english accent. How can americans not get it!?!? Beats me!
what americans don't get it. We get it it just sounded different. Did it occur to you that people who live in different areas tend to hear other countries words different and vice versa?
The Ma'am thing had me blown....I never thought anyone confused them. Mum (mom) & ma'em (ma'am) have different inflections. But we all hear different things I guess 🤷🏾♀️
I thought the interviewer was kind and fun! Also, the way Richard speaks and looks during every interview is soooo endearing I'm melting from behind my screen omg
Wow. This makes Americans look so clueless! It only took the first time he said ma’am for me to know he was saying ma’am. That part of the interview made me cringe. 😳
I stopped the interview when she just kept at the ma’am thing but I LoVE Richard and he needs to show more of his talent to us the world !! I am Saudi Arabian fan and God I adore the way he says ma’am and just how he acted in general .. it was on point for me!! And apparently for many across the world
“So it’s not ma’am meaning ma’am, it’s mum meaning mom?” “No, it’s ma’am meaning ma’am, not mom.” - “I’m not calling her mum! I don’t call my boss mum.” “So you’re calling her mom?” “Ma’am” “But what does that mean, it’s like your mother?” What is wrong with this woman?
whys everyone being so damn harsh in the comments? the interview was actually quite a breathe of fresh air compared to most other formal boring af interviews. i loved how she made this more like a laidback conversation they could laugh over and you really cant blame her for not understanding what he was saying. as a brit myself i couldnt even get him at times. lol
It's amazing how people couldn't understand the dialogue due to a different accent. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out and I'm south african/not black african. Then again most Americans elected trump and his administration. Bodyguard was pretty gripping. A solid 86% for everything from story to action . Acting in bodyguard will get 90% though .Thumbs crossed for Season 2 of bodyguard . Maybe Julia returns ?
She was embarrassing us Americans with the whole “mum” “mom” “ma’am” thing. We all know that Americans aren’t all that great, but in a professional setting, you call your superiors “ma’am” obviously. Recognize that it’s a different accent
What´s wrong with her? She doesn´t even know basic English. I can understand her and him and English is not my first language Although I definitely prefer his Scottish Accent despite him toning it down. It is well known that the Elton John movie is about to be released.
Is she playing dumb or what? I'M not a native and i undrrstand what he said its not the accent its common sense srsly!!and she was annoying him you could tell!!tbh most of the times American tv tries too hard to make something sound so exciting and glamourous and have lots of media coverage especially when it comes to award shows!
Here’s ipa for the vowel in American dialect mom: /ɑ/ and Scottish dialect ma’am /a/ the former is way backer in the mouth. American English dialect actually contrasts these two vowel (e.g. hot and heart)so try harder. In most British dialects mom and Scottish dialect ma’am does sound more easy to distinguish though. (Former /ɒ/, latter /a/ meaning in British dialects you round you lip to pronounce mom so easier to distinguish )
Nah nah nah nah nah don’t think that all Americans are like her, I knew he was saying ma’am not Bc I understood Bc to me it does sound like mom but Bc I have common sense
As an American, this is SO embarrassing. Really, you never heard of ma'am? Ok , I get the pronunciation may have been difficult at first (like the first few minutes of the first episode), but use your common sense. Oh, and maybe ppl who are going to interview international artists SHOULD TRAVEL!! i will never watch EXTRA again.
Richard is Scottish!! Not English! Clearly he is saying in his Scottish accent Madam. Please American entertainers - interviewer do your homework!! Go back to School!!
the yikes i felt when she said he was “too English”....the Scots don’t like that my gal
He did really well to not react!

I really like this interviewer’s charisma and the whole “ma’am” thing was pretty funny
same, and everyone here is giving her a hard time while to me she was sweet and hillarious
The Ma'am thing had me blown....I never thought anyone confused them. Mum (mom) & ma'em (ma'am) have different inflections. But we all hear different things I guess 🤷🏾♀️
Did she really just call that Scottish man, English? 😐 Giiiiirl.
I thought the interviewer was kind and fun! Also, the way Richard speaks and looks during every interview is soooo endearing I'm melting from behind my screen omg
that "I hope so" at the end was so sweet
The Ma'am/mum exchange was frustrating to watch lmao. Im not Scottish but I could still hear that he was saying ma'am.
He is so beautiful 😍
I don't think she was actually listening to what he was saying, how many times does he need to explain or repeat himself.
“He’s too English” lol he’s defo Scottish
Wow. This makes Americans look so clueless!
It only took the first time he said ma’am for me to know he was saying ma’am.
That part of the interview made me cringe. 😳
Arlene Leilani I cringed too and I’m American, not all Americans are like that I promise it’s just her 😂
It’s definitely her she makes Americans look so bad because I knew from the first time he said it he was saying ma’am not mom...she’s just slooow .
yall need to relax it's not that big of a deal. jesus
I stopped the interview when she just kept at the ma’am thing but I LoVE Richard and he needs to show more of his talent to us the world !! I am Saudi Arabian fan and God I adore the way he says ma’am and just how he acted in general .. it was on point for me!! And apparently for many across the world
"Mom" is also how most locals in my country pronounce "ma'am". Can easily relate on this with Richard.
He's absolutely gorgeous & very pleasant.
“So it’s not ma’am meaning ma’am, it’s mum meaning mom?”
“No, it’s ma’am meaning ma’am, not mom.” - “I’m not calling her mum! I don’t call my boss mum.”
“So you’re calling her mom?”
“Ma’am”
“But what does that mean, it’s like your mother?”
What is wrong with this woman?
It was so funny to me 😂
I don't know why that confused her so.
hahahhahaha mom, ma'am. I could always hear the difference and I'm Mexican....
this shit is so funny 😂

I'm American and I understood right away that he was saying "ma'am"

Love him 😍😍😍

Everyone complaining but I thought the ending bit was hilarious😂😂
What´s wrong with her? She doesn´t even know basic English. I can understand her and him and English is not my first language Although I definitely prefer his Scottish Accent despite him toning it down. It is well known that the Elton John movie is about to be released.

is she drunk? lol the ending was hilarious!
English is not my language, but I still manage to understand his accent 😒..
Please can someone educate the Americans in the difference between the Scottish and the English.
“He’s too English”’ wow - would that he had replied with “never call me fucking English again”
OMG ... I even know the difference from M'am and Mum...
Te quiero
Well military people say m’am because that’s a respectful thing
It's Ma'am you silly woman.

Btw Scottish people are not English. They're British.
Wow,,,,
She is obviously not from the south of the US. I understood him fine.
Watching this woman is actually cringeworthy.
Wow she’s slow
He is truly magically delicious
The ending is so awkward... Americans' ignorance is unbelievable...
I cant believe how stupid this interview went.....it started out fine
Nah nah nah nah nah don’t think that all Americans are like her, I knew he was saying ma’am not Bc I understood Bc to me it does sound like mom but Bc I have common sense
How many times can you get a clear answer and ask the same question/repeat your mistake 🤦🏻♂️ CRINGE

I'm so glad she mentioned the "ma'm" sounding like "mum" because anyone who isnt from europe clearly heard mum at first😂😂😂
Maybe they did but "mum" wouldn't make much sense would it?
