I lived during this time and this song always reminds me of an innocence of children. songwriter didn't see color or alcohol as a deterrent (maybe mama did, idk) he simply appreciated a man with talent who brought joy to his life.
Folks ain't born with hatred in their hearts. They are taught. This song shows the innocence and love of the world as children because you are experiencing things for the first time. Maybe we should go back to be children and stop being adults. Life was easier then. Great reaction!
For me, a mid 50's boy of the south, this song captures a moment in time of life how it was back in the 60's & 70's. The phrasing, the dialect, the accent all adds up to something uniquely southern.
This is a nostalgic song about youthful rebellion and elderly redemption. A complex song about a simple moment in time that has surely happened just like the lyrics in one way or another, over and over. Freebird is a hard working band back in the day and they overcame a lot of tragedy and adversity so they could hear their fans holler Freebird from the crowd again. If you love Freebird, maybe you still have a chance to watch them play? Go to lynyrdskynyrd.com/ and see if you can catch some of The Last Street Survivors before they finally say farewell.
You totally get it. Other Reactors really miss out in not researching. Not discovering how Ronnie wrote songs from real-life events; That Smell is a prime example.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's first album was "Pronounced" and "Second Helping" was their second which this song was on... Released in 1974... Curtis was a fictional character and based on the following people that influenced the boys life at an early age in Jacksonville Fl... Claude H. "Papa" Hammer, Rufus "Tee Tot" Payne, Robert Johnson, and Shorty Medlocke... Claude owned the real corner store mentioned in the song... Shorty was Ricky Medlocke's grandfather...Your take on the song was spot on I thought... a simpler time it was... One of my favorite songs to sing along with...
Skynrd's music has always had a home feel to it. It's lke they played this music even if nobody else would ever hear it. They stayed true to their roots. Heart, Soul, Tempo
You're the MAN-thank you, and agree completely with your assessment. Such a deep and timeless classic...SO MANY MORE people NEED to HEAR this song AND this band.
Have you ever delved into the Band? They were all terrific musicians and had a country rock style all of their own. "The Weight" & "Up on Cripple Creek" are 2 great songs to start with.
Beautiful words, brother! Music crosses every line, including race. Ain't no difference between you and I, just a bit of extra melanin! My momma taught me to be like that, and I'm from the deep south. We get a bad rap down here, but truth is, we're just like y'all. And y'all are just like us.
I heard this band for the first time when I was 8 in 1977. I was in a video arcade, standing next to a game called thief and learning later seeing a guy with a bag of 200 to 300 joints selling them for 50 cents each. They were twice the size of a cigarette. The song was Sweet Home Alabama. This has always been one of my top bands. They had no hate and almost every song they did sounded different.
A lot of their music reminds me of a few hours after the fish fry/BBQ, when the kids are out chasin crickets and fireflies while the adults are sitting around the fire relaxin and tellin stories. Or as an EX of mine put it. "Tellin lies". Laid back moments where you can relax and recall that time when so and so did such and such, and got away with it. A 'luckiest sumbitch I ever met" moment.
I’ve said this many times, brother you are by far my fav. React. You know music from R&B to Funk to Rock to Southern Rock classic Rock, Motown and if you don’t know it you are spot on good or bad I have learned how to enjoy the music you react to and that’s what’s it’s about thanks for taking us down this road can’t wait for the next turn in the music road
Finally! A Reactor with good taste and Knowledge to this wonderful song from Ronnie’s childhood. But there’s still ignorant people that say LS was racist because of the Confederate Flag! Heritage not Hate!
well, i must certainly won't be talking about any of that anymore. I will leave the music to the music and podcast stuff for podcast stuff. But at the end of the day, I'm judging the music not the people.
@@BypoeleurEntertainment I think the best we can do is to understand that the flag meant 20 different things in the past, but we're moving away from it now, because it's time. I'm a southern White Guy here in Arkansas, I grew up with alot of black and white kids in my area..we would all watch Dukes of Hazzard and fight over who got to be which Duke.. Anyhow..the truth of the matter is that music kills prejudice and racism.. after all, LS was basically a 70's Blues/Rock band..
It's beautiful how music brings everyone together!! Like seriously!! All races, all ages, all religions!! We all love good music!! We have love!! Then ,we allow people who don't have love, divide us... can't we all just live everyone like everyone loves music?
It helped that Al Kooper who manage and produced Skynyrds first 3 albums was a very accomplished musician heavily into the Blues ..He was a Found I member and the first lead singer for Blood Sweat and Tears and has a music pedigree a mile long
This is one my favorite Skynyrd songs. A unique fact was Ronnie Van Zant favorite singer he emulated was the great Paul Rodgers of free and Bad Company for a southern Boy 2 want to emulate an Englishman was interesting
Hank Sr. was taught by black man and so was Elvis and both are considered to be one of the greatest in their genres. In the south bluegrass and Mississippi delta blues players took from one another and made music. Out of those came all genres of music and you can hear the influence
Those first five albums were all like greatest hits albums. The amount of excellent music was off the charts, but the plane crash really messed with that magic. Certainly a band worthy of full album reactions. Great songs, great musicians, great arrangements. Unbeatable.
You're absolutely right, everything they did was a greatest hits , but it was seven albums actually. Pronounced, Second Helping, Nothin' Fancy, Give Me Back My Bullets, Live One More From The Road, Street Survivors, and last in order only First And Last!!! Also thank you very much to Mr. Dramaking no not Dramasyde Dramaking for helping in a big way to keep classic rock and especially southern rock alive with a heart beat. As those of us that were there and are now here know music of the classic rock and southern rock era know the music was written from the heart and soul and played with passion love and joy ( plus an over abundance of talent and hard work ). I know not everyone will agree but I just don't see that anywhere today and it's a shame because that music back then was magical it could make feel pain and joy and wonderment and loss it could make you see things more clearly sometimes and a lot of it definitely made a lot of us ( or at least me and people I've known ) strive to be a better person. Long Live Rock be it dead or alive 🎸🎸🎸✌️😁

Good music. A child enjoying an old man who played the blues. It doesn’t have to be about labels. The song is simple. Love, reverence, and music.

So many rock and country artists were inspired by black blues artists. They knew good music and imitation is the greatest form of flattery!
