I have a Shakespeare Alpha medium size saltwater spinning that is very similar internally to that Shimano. On my last trip to the Gulf I encountered that same problem with the anti-reverse. Because I wanted to keep fishing without having to stop to repair a reel I went to the local Walmart in Rockport, Texas, and bought a similar sized reel to replace it. That evening it started raining so I elected to stay indoors and have a look at my troubled reel. It took about me about an hour to diagnose the problem as it wasn't evident when I opened up the reel. Fortunately I didn't have to replace any parts. I cleaned the offending part that was gummed up with congealed grease. After lubing everything and reassembly it was ready to be put back in service.
Thanks for sharing your story. Most reels with this type of A/R failure is due to dirt or grease. A few fail because of the springs. Best wishes - Dennis
Hi Dennis, Well done effort on a pretty involved journey ! Would have to admit if I had one of these reels I'd have to replay this video a number of times to get in and out, and to fix the anti-reverse ?!? Bummer about the sand, but that's the way the seashore crumbles ! All the Best, Cons
It is a fantastic hobby but not without its occasional problems. Don’t get to see many low end Shimanos. I had one of those problems yesterday with a Daiwa 2600C. I had a very tight seized side plate screw that would not budge. I used two different penetrating oils and let it sit and soak for 16 hours. Still no movement. I thought I would have to drill it out. I think there must have been some flaw in the casting of the housing because with my severe arthritis I don’t have a lot of hand or arm strength. The housing shattered as I tried one last time to loosen the screw. A new housing was easily found but I’ve never had that happen before. It was upsetting but there was nothing I could do about it. In a few days I’ll have it like new. I already had a 2600C but I love the Daiwa Silver Series reels so more is better! I just got my 4th Bretton French spinning reel - an 805. Don’t see them very often. I have a matched pair of the largest Bretton saltwater reels - 902 bailed and 903 PUM, a 400, and now this 805. If you ever get the chance to service a lever drag spinning reel it is a lot of fun - LOL! Very weird design and difficult to do. I have 3 of them and love fishing with them. - Airex Mastereel Saltwater No. 1 reels. Take care Dennis! Thanks for doing this for a first responder!
Sounds like you got a tuition reel there! Sometimes it's just salt that corrodes and welds the screw in place. Little can be done there. Best wishes - That is quite a collection you have there! - Dennis
I love these low end Shimanos for dedicated use on my sabiki rods for getting bait. They are simple but reliable with more bushings than bearings. But for main reels I need my Van Staal VSB or large Daiwa Japan made reels. But my reels get abused and get wet with saltwater so they are required.
I have a similar reel to this one just older and the spool is seized and the top is a bit different its smaller and can't get any grip on it whats the best way to undo it
Remove the adjuster knob and then the drag stack retention spring. Use a small screwdriver or pick/awl to remove the drags and metals one by one. It is possible that the drag metals have rusted on to the axle shaft. If that is the case, penetrating oil or a rust buster may help to free it up - Dennis

Yeah - the metal is cheap and it rots or crumbles as you say - Dennis
