  • Excerpt from PBS WHYY Special "Things That Aren't There Anymore." The show aired in the '90s and the excerpt I recorded from it included Public Transit and Broad Street Station. Broad St. Station existed on the site of Penn Center/Suburban Station. There also existed a great wall, aka, the "China Wall" from the station all the way to the river. Part 1 of 2. This is all I recorded from the special.

    Having grown up in Philadelphia and Delaware County, I've ridden a lot of trolleys and have always liked them. My dad was always afraid of me taking public transportation. But, I never had any problems.

    Love riding the trolley cars. When I was very young we use to take the trolley downtown to LIts and Gimbels for shopping with my Mom. When I started in High School I always rode the street cars, they were fun and a neat way to get around Philly.

    They still got them trolleys operating around west Philly, they were out for awhile and randomly starting letting them operate like 7 years ago

    • @Rob774
      @Rob774 3 года назад +1

      The West Philly trolleys never stopped and randomly came back. If you didn't see them (10, 15, 34) that means there was street work being done somewhere and thus they had to use shuttle busses. I'm a west philly kid who's rode them all.

    Philly should have had the best transit in the world. It looks like the PRR didn’t do very much to make that happen. Would NY be as big today had they not built such an extensive system?

    • @RedArrow73

    Callowhill Depot still has tracks going to it. i wonder if the Subway Surface Cars are housed there?

    • @garysmith394
      @garysmith394 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the route 10 and the route 15 both use the Callowhill Depot. The route 10 is of course a subway-surface route.

    • @christopherbryant366
      @christopherbryant366 4 года назад +2

      The 15 is now a bus again because of construction on I95 and the PCC trolleys deteriorating so as far as I know the 10 is still at Callowhill but I believe in a year or two the 15 trolleys will return

  • @josephheston9238
    @josephheston9238 8 лет назад +4

    Umm, the PCCs were more streamlined than the K-cars (as much as I liked the K-cars).

    • @garysmith394
      @garysmith394 5 лет назад

      I also love the K cars but in my opinion the PCCs were the best looking trolleys ever built. I don't think that design can ever be improved upon.

      The K Cars are ugly unlike the PCCs

  • @wolfy1987
    @wolfy1987 6 лет назад +1

    I do find it a bit funny he mentions the PCC streetcars being replaced by more "streamlined" ones, and then the camera pans over to a more boxy less streamlined vehicle. Never liked the look of the modern ones.

    • @garysmith394
      @garysmith394 5 лет назад

      I agree that the K cars are definitely not streamlined and resemble the old trolleys more than they do the PCC cars. However, I much prefer them to the new articulated cars and trains that are running in several other cities. They look like worms or caterpillars especially when making turns. At least the Philadelphia K cars have trolley poles instead of pantographs and you can see the wheels from the sides of the cars.

    Is Philly the only place that calls downtown center city?

    • @phillyphilly2095
      @phillyphilly2095 3 года назад +3

      I don't know. But "downtown" is a New York thing, derived from the north-south orientation of Manhattan island, with the business district being in the south end of the island (i.e., "down"). Philly's business district is more centrally located in the city (with neighborhoods to the north, west, and south); hence "center city" is more appropriate for Philly.
