I'm an indie developer and I can tell you we're still trucking along, we only build on our free time but we're still a couple of years away from Early Access or Kickstarter.
Sadly, I can relate to you. I'm a solo developer who just started work on my game, last year and while I'm happy with the progress I made, up to this point, I still have a long way to go. But I'm not giving up, regardless.
Sr😅×😮😮@@nsgames24
Sometimes grinding nonstop will only produce underpar results. I get the best work when I feel inspired and want to do it. Even the industry didn't become big over night, it was after decades of thousands of studios putting the effort so there's no reason for one team or person to feel they have to do all the work. Just do what you feel inclined to do
Try to build it during work too if ya can 😊
Thanks for checking out Fretless ❤
We’re so proud of our little game :)
Can't wait to enjoy the game AND the music combined together!
Wait, you're involved with this game? Damn, Rob. Branching out hard
oh dang I know (of) you!
You're involved with Fretless!?
Why didn't I know D:
I was interested but now I'm hyped.
There's some crazy irony that these big publishers are losing their shit cuz they're not making all the money in the world so they're firing everyone and not making games, while these small devs are like "yeah that's ok, we'll just make what you're not and we'll be happy about it."
Most indie devs are also having lots of trouble. Reading your comment tells me you have no idea how businesses work😅 you can’t just willie nillie and keep everyone on board and continue to do what you do.. you can’t spend a thousand bucks if you only have 5.. thats not how the world works
@@Gingerlion777 I think your missing the point that while these triple a companies are firing people to meet some quota (While still having the means to keep everybody employed mind you) most indie devs don't do that and hire who they can afford which is usually just themselves. Indie's get to keep making their games and fine tuning while triple a companies are pausing their games production because they were dumb enough to fire the talent.
What's even better, the devs they are firing are the ones becoming small indie devs and startups....so it's somewhat of a win anyway.
@@kninezbanksdo you have a source on this?
@@william41017 all 3 off these guys have no idea what they are talking about.. but im not even gonna bother. They also believe that Indie stands for 1 man studios.. so why would i even try.. most of my friends are indie developers! And believe me they are having a hard time! Passion project indie devs (1 or 2 man companies can do whatever they like) the rest are just small businesses with small teams! They need investors, and geus what? Nobody invests at the moment. Anyway everyone has the right to an opinion i geus.
Hey Bob, Julian here! The Quest Master guy! It was so great to meet you in person. Looking forward to hopefully meeting you next PAX with QM being full force in Early Access!
Awesome concept that I'm looking forward to trying out! I hope this is something you will be able to expand on with future games!
@@VertigoX26 Appreciate it! We are pushing the very limits of 2D with Quest Master already, so the only logical transition into a sequel could be a Link between Worlds 2.5D which could be very interesting! But I don’t wanna think too far ahead since we have a very content packed early access phase ahead of us haha!
My name is Julian too!
@@JulianDN awesome name :)
I LOVE these sorts of videos where it's just wall-to-wall top quality indie games I can buy for my Steam Deck
+1
It was so great meeting you on Friday! I was the one chatting about your second channel and the Nex 5N. Thanks for continually kindling my excitement for game hardware, emulation, and creative outlets!
Great meeting you too!
That guy from the rugrats booth gets all the awards for best dude.
you just made my day!
@@spoonybardtoma as someone who purchased nes roms from kickstarter a lifetime ago and gets the vibe of a mario 2 type game with a well designed crt filter to boot I wish nothing but success. Kindred spirits (:
Hey, it was great meeting you in person (we’ve spoken briefly on the Poland booth near „Heading Out” game).
I’m always amazed when big youtubers turn out to be awesome in real life and you were just that - awesome to talk to.
Boston was cold AF, but meeting you for a minute made it worth it ;)
Thanks!
Thanks a ton Bob! Means the world that you stopped by and played some LUCID. Appreciate all your kind words :)
AGAIN... If you ever want to play some more LUCID, just let me know... I'll make it happen 💪😁💎
I just wishlisted your game, it looks awesome!
@@TMTGD !!! THANK YOU so much for the support my friend. Truly helps :)
This was definitely the highlight of the vid for me. Looking forward to your game!
@@geofatic Cant say thanks enough my friend! Really appreciate it :) Im giving LUCID everything i got!!
@@TMTGD AHH!! Thank you!! your support helps so much :) tytyty
Lucid was the best game I got to play at PAX East. I played that demo multiple times and I feel like it got better each time! I can’t wait to play the full release
I'm hyped for the lollipop chainsaw remaster, it's supposed to come out later this year hopefully
Wood’s got an interview with Suda51 on the @nontendopodcast channel. And I’m sure part of it will be in his main channel soon
I’m glad this year is slow, I still have so many games to finish in my library lol
Fading Afternoon is is *by design* a story about a melancholic aging gangster who smokes a lot. It's not about gamepley really. I find the developer's description hilarious: "Overall not a bad game. Hit me pretty hard a couple of times while playing, but maybe it was just my mood"
Amazing video. Thank you Bob for the new games shoutout. Screenbound, Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, Berzerk Boy, Lucid and Krimson caught my eye but there’s something for everyone here.
🙏🥰💯
Thanks for highlighting these games!
As an indie dev who loves indie games, I'm super excited about Die in the Dungeon!
Thanks for highlighting indies, and the situation in Pax. Valuable insights!
Thank you for making a video like this! I like finding out about these cool projects, they all look great.
Happy I got to run into you at PAX. Kinda caught your off-guard so sorry about that. I didn't hit many booths with demos so this video is what I need to catch up on what I missed.
BTW, tip for next year: There is an "underground" entrance to the BCEC you can to through the Omni hotel. The door is on the World Trade Center bridge so you don't actually have to enter the hotel. Just take the escalater down, cross the service road, and take the elevator up to the BCEC. They closed the direct entrance to the BCEC during PAX, but the other exit puts you right at the queue line to enter the building. They did let you exit through the entrance thought. Saved me from the ran and cold this year.
As far as upcoming games go, the games I'm really excited for are No Rest For The Wicked and Phantom Fury. Quest Master and Berserk Boy looked sick too!
Come to the PA farm show, it’s hosted in Harrisburg in mid January. It’s a known tradition for us to get a decent snow the week of. It’s a funny situation with these conventions always being the same times.
that intro to surfshark killed me lmfao
These types of videos are a breath of fresh air!! Great job Bob!!
There is a great game that came out late last year that has a demo called "Cattails: Wildwood Story". It's made by two people, and it's wonderfully crafted with an amazing world to jump into, with amazing music, gameplay and characters. Think if Stardew Valley was Cats instead of humans. As someone who backed the game on kickstarter, it was 100% worth it and I am super happy.
thanks for covering this, some of the indies games looks fun and i just wishlisted, it's really sad what happened with some places because of layoffs, let's hope for a better time next year
Happy Easter Bob!
Indie games have been my favorites over the past few years. I always appreciate those types of videos! Especially for the Steamdeck. My new indie game machine. 👍
I went to pax this year, and I can say that it was really barren compared to previous years. There wasn’t really any big name games there. At some indie booths, there were some with 5+ different games, which made it difficult to choose and end up just moving to the next booth. The Cosplay was cool as always, and the tekken tournament was pretty cool. But I’m hoping next year we see more exciting AAA titles.
Unfortunately if it keeps going this way for PAX, it will go the way of E3...
Love the video, made me start a wishlist for Steam Deck finally. Thanks for doing my homework for me
Love the video. The ad bit always makes me laugh!
Great Video! Love it when great Indys, old games, greatest hits aso. gets featured. There are so many interesting Games out there which I/we/many... don't know about :).
The Rugrats, Fading Afternoon, Quest Master, and Berserk Boy look like the best of the bunch.
That Rugrats game looks sick!
Your ads always gives me a good laugh!
the production quality of your videos is really of the hook ... that music and the cars passing under the rain ... this is not a gaming channel, man, this is an art channel.
Lots of interesting games. Wishlisted 3 of them
Quality video and quality games. Nice one Mr. Wulff!
I use the wishlist on steam often, it’s been helpful tool for giving on Christmas and friendsgiving
Really appreciate this video as someone who is new to the indie scene and has no idea where to start looking for games. I'm trying the Pepper Grinder Demo right now on my Deck and it's freaking awesome so far, super unique and fun :)
Thanks for all the suggestion. And reminding me of Raven Shields existence!
I don't buy the "delay to combat scalping" line at all. Wii scalping was rampant 2006-2007 but Nintendo didn't care. They released the Wii U on such a schedule as if that never happened. I think Nintendo is just stretching out Switch 1 sales as long as they can and working out unforeseen technical issues with Switch 2. Cynical, yes, but also a much more logical explanation.
I also think they're lowkey trying to surpass PS2 as the best selling console of all time. It could be a huge marketing win if they had that title in the bag
@@arfanik9827Switch is at almost 140 million consoles sold, while PS2 has a total of 160 million consoles sold according to outgoing Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan. The Wikipedia figure of 155 million PS2 sales is from 2012. I don't think there's any way Switch sells +20 million units across the next year or even by mid-life Switch 2. The next decade, maybe.
Honestly, I don’t think there are games ready for it. The device is likely ready, there just anything to play on it yet. Digital foundry had a discussion on the topic.

Great video Happy Easter Bob
My body is so ready for a slow year in gaming. My backlog is the stuff of legend at this point.
I can NOT wait to dive into Lucid.
Cinematography is immaculate
It sounds like a lot of the money that indie devs were getting for putting their games on Game Pass and Epic Game Store is drying up too, so everyone in the industry is feeling the squeeze, not just AAA studios. I wouldn't be surprised if funding indie games through Kickstarter/Indiegogo makes a big comeback in the future.
Good to hear
Love Bob always visiting my town when weather is shit lol
The Rugrats game looks super cute and fun.
the Steam family sharing is a huge game changer.
Thanks for signing my picture from E32019 and my Sonic Super Stars game. Hope you liked the 3D Printer Gengar. Was good to see you again. Take care!😊
I saw the Limited Run post of Rugrats and thought it was gonna be pretty sweet. I might have to hop on the bandwagon and get that cool physical release!
BRO YOU WERE THERE I WISH I KNEW
Oh shit! I went to school with Thomas (Spoony Bard Prod) - he used to do NES/SNES ROM translations. He was a cool guy.
hopefully I'm still a cool guy
@@spoonybardtomaHave not seen you since ITEC so I cant say for sure, but I assume you still are :)
Krimson is awesome! Loving my purchase! Thanks guys!
Was awesome to physically run into you on the skybridge. Have to agree it was a less-packed PAX East than I've experienced in the past. But, this was also my 11 year-old's first PAX, so having it slightly easier to navigate wasn't the worst thing either ...
I am waiting patiently for that Rugrats game. August can't come sooner
Can’t wait for someone to port the Rugrats game to Miyoo mini looks super fun
you had me at "cleste-troidvania"
Love the opening shots!! The backlog has more than enough for me to do for 2024
This Is Bait by Amber Jauna, if you’re wondering
It was so great to meet you at Pax! I felt similarly that the chunk of the floor that should be filled with big booths felt barren and weird, but honestly I’m down to lose that if it is filled with more space for indie devs (and Dunkin giving out gift cards)
The Rugrats game is pretty fun. I tried it out at the last NYCC.
Screenbound looks like it'll absolutely break my brain. Can't wait to try it.
I think I enjoy the sponsor spots as much as the actual content
I am so glad to see an environment where indie games get the spotlight. I have already added Lucid to my Steam Wishlist and I already bought Berserk Boy. What a great game. So cool you saw the game developer there. I too thought Pulse Man when I saw that game. Rugrats looks like an unexpected gem. Thank you for that one. That Taxi game looks cool too. Adding those to the list as well.
When I got my OLED Switch, I thought it would be my place for indie games in addition to the Nintendo first party games, of course, but my Steam Deck ended up being the place where I am playing most of these great indie titles. I am also glad both the Steam Deck and the Switch are great platforms for indie developers to work on and make a profit. Thank you for this video.
Screenbound is certainly a new concept to me. Very curious
Honestly I’ve been more than ok with “indie” dev teams and the games they produce over these big cash grab hype games every 3-6mo. I think a more focused approach to making a game is what the industry needs. We have plenty of (if not too many) esports titles. All the big players need to focus on making better engines, tools, and resources that smaller teams can license/use.
I like how you said, "tell me in the comments" when you tell us all the time that you don't read comments on RUclips. Lol
Lucid and Beserk Boy look pretty cool. I'll add them to my list of maybe get one day on sale.
Dude has the best sponsor spots
Lucid sounds awesome!
Thanks so much my friend :)
I really liked what I played of berserk boy it reminds me a lot of gunvolt in particular with it having tagging and a electric character
9:51 "I'm a dpad guy" 10:55 oh are you?
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about Renaine. That was one of my favorite games to try on the floor this year.
I did not get a chance to check it out, but I’ll put it on the ol’ wishlist
Screenbound giving me those Fez vibes.
Krimson and Quest Master seem to be good games to try. Fretless is something I recognize due to Rob Scallon advertising the game which I hope to try as well.
crimson goes hard af!
I feel like the steam deck has really sparked more interest in retro gaming.
Mariachi Legends comes in September, and it's looking awesome.
I'm surprised it's not a Devolver Digital title, but it does look pretty cool.
I immediately bought Krimson, holy shit that looks awesome
2:53 I haven’t laughed so hard 😂
It was nice meeting you at Pax East, Bob! I hope Wood didn’t make you hold the monopod all day!
A year focused on indie games instead of big corporate games? I see no problems here. That's how things should be.
Facts
Literally just looking for screen less as a friend showed me a clip of it and I forgot the name. Thinking about it as I watched the video and you apparently read my mind and included it
Fading Afternoon is awesome and very confusing
So glad the OUYA is doing okay
That 2D+3D game looks insane
DEMOS! Gimme them demos OMNOMNOMNOM. Always interested to hear there's something new that might be worth while and that I can actually SAMPLE. Just this week I was alerted to something called _Showgunners,_ which is kinda like a Smash TV-esque strategy game... I must be into strategy because the other demo I'd suggest is _Knights in Tight Spaces_ (very much another take on the _Fights in Tight Spaces_ game style.) Too bad Fading Afternoon doesnt have a demo I'd very much like to try that. Maybe there's one on Itch? ...nope, oh well.
Yo I’m excited for rugrats! Pepper grinder is fun, and also do we think Mina the hollower is ever actually coming out? Lol
Some nice looking titles
I heard GDC was at the same time which is why Pax was less busy than usual
Oh that's actually super terrible. 😂
you are a good man
You saw Screenbound before in the movie Surf Ninjas.
Some good-lookin' stuff here. I share your love of 2D platformers. Been playing Rabi-Ribi recently. That recently-released Froggo's Adventure game was also very good but pretty short. From your list I'm most excited for Lucid. Wishlisted.
🙏💯🥰
honestly, the Indies are doing what the Gaming industry actually needs, so thank you for promoting more games that will go right into my wishlist
sadly there wasn't a HoloIndie booth at PAX as Holo x Break dropped & the world needs to know that HoloCure got a Co-op Beat'em Up spin-off
No hungry shark dog only Guille theme vibes 😊
You should try out Black Ice. A friend has spent the last decade or so developing it. It's kind of Tron aesthetic meets Borderlands...and it has online multiplayer.
BESERK BOY MENTIONED!!!
Balatro will have my most play hours this year and it's not even close. Already it has passed helldivers and im just figuring it out
Indie devs are the backbone of the gaming industry. Consistently coming up with innovative ways to introduce gamers to new concepts. Definitely giving Berserk Boy a shot.
It blows me away that people STILL pronounce Mario as "Merry-o".
Love ya, Bob 😁
