This means that akaza was not even trying, and rengoku's weak display of speed pales in comparison to what tengen has shown. However, he was able to keep up and intervene against Gyutaro. And the gap between Mugen Train and Entertainment district is only a few days when Tanjiro had no chance to train. That alone proves that the combat speed difference. Rengoku > Tengen

Second, people like tanjiro and zenitsu improve massively during their fights, and despite their fights against demons being miniscule in length compared to their normal training, only during a battle to the death against a demon do they start to turn the screws in their head and get a massive boost in their skills. It's like they reawaken after every major battle. Third, have you even seen the difference between how unmarked muichiro vs marked muichiro performed against gyoko? That creepy fisherman no diffed him at first, but when muichiro fought him again with a mark gyoko was the one who was no diffed. This is the difference between being marked and being unmarked. Again, I repeat, Rengoku is FODDER
