  • With the Arctic warming, melting sea ice is opening routes to untapped petroleum and gas reserves. Nations within the Arctic Circle are making claims on those reserves by establishing exclusive economic zones, while others are investing billions to get a slice of the pie. The FT’s Myles McCormick explains the economic and environmental risks that come with exploiting this final frontier

"With the Arctic warming, melting sea ice is opening routes to untapped petroleum and gas reserves." will never stop being one crazy hell of a sentence to me. Talk about positive (ha!) feedback loop.

Thank you for the explanation. So aside from all the other very valid reasons for not building oil rigs in the artic, if they won’t come online until 2050, when the world is supposed to be mainly fossil free, even if we are not fossil free, its still clear at this point that our fuel consumption is going to have greatly decreased by then and therefore demand has reduced and the price has dropped, why would any politician/government touch this? It just seems like an enormous waste of taxpayers money.

Should be massively and globally illegal. Makes the quest for safe nuclear energy options all the more vital in the short and medium terms.

Until the world wants to get serious about nuclear, the world will still run on oil and gas. I’d say just get to it before the Russians do! 🎉
