Epicurus’s theory is insanely impressive even with hindsight knowing how primitive their resources were, if you asked me I would’ve guessed that theory was from the 1800s
It's pretty similar to both Buddhisim and the jewish Ecclesiastes. Humanity developed it independently at least three times for it to turn out to be kind of right, which is cool.
On atoms, it wasn't his theory (it was even earlier, by Leucippus) but he was a supporter.

The part you're talking about was neither unique nor novel. Epicurus was a very late Greek philosopher, and atomism predates even Socrates with Leucippus. From Plato to Aristotle most philosophical discussion of physics and metaphysics became concerned with topics like matter, form and essence rather than the composition of matter, but before Socrates/Plato and after Aristotle the discussion was largely between atomists (who believed in indivisible units of matter so small they could not be seen, that comprised everything in the universe and gave rise to the senses) and material monadists (who believed in infinitely divisible substances that interacted via waves in a kind of endless gridlock, often paired with the belief that there could be no such thing as a true void for reasons beyond the scope of a mid-length RUclips comment).
It's worth noting that atomism and monadism are generally simultaneously accepted by the empirical natural philosophers (ie "scientists") of today: There are apparent particles, some of which are even still considered indivisible, that have a finite number of stable states in which they comprise matter and energy, and there are waves in a monadic field or membrane that actually give rise to those apparent particles. None of that actually vindicates or denounces the ancients; They were operating within the best science of their time and came to different conclusions for straightforward and sensible reasons.
It is a fun quirk of the history of philosophy that, for example, the Stoics and Epicureans were philosophical "enemies," often even ridiculing each other publicly, despite their ethics and definitions of a good life appearing extremely similar to a layperson, but that because philosophy was a much broader term concerning not only topics like ethics, meaning and metaphysics but also physics, Stoics were generally monadists while Epicureans were generally atomists, and this was one of the topics over which they would go at each other's throats in discourse.
No it's not. If you bother to really inform about it, you realize that it has except on some details pretty much nothing to do with our modern knowledge. And as you can expect for that time, it's just a bullshit model based on nothing. And when we say that Epicure was empiricist, it's also misleading, like just he said that knowledge comes from sense which fits the strict definition of empiricism but nothing about a empiricist method to get good knowledge like we do today. The true basis of that comes from Aristotle and his Lyceum, which made the best models of their time for pretty much everything that could be studied.

It's not that hard to figure out when you just think about it. Matter exists? Division must end somewhere otherwise we fall into the unthinkable/unknowable? Atoms must exist. Just use your mind, it's easy.
Also, atomism was not invented by epicurus.

When I first read Epicurus’ essays, I felt like I was grading a high schooler’s homework on particle physics. Initially was like well yeah duh, of course atoms work like that (mostly). I had to physically pause and digest that this man wrote these words around 2000 years ago. That’s when the penny dropped and my mind was truly blown.
I mean, we learn the pythagorean theorem at high school. Many stuff we take for granted is recent enough to know the name of the inventor.
The idea of the atom was much older though, it already appeared centuries before Epicurus. Although I am an Epicurean myself, in all fairness it must be said that Epicurus just expanded on the ideas of those before him.
@@trnogger yea obviously he knew about what atoms were thought to be, but what we mean by this theory was impressive was because the theories we have of atoms now weren't made until the 1800s. His theories are essentially on point, and it's impressive because he had no tools that those scientist had when making his observations. Please don't tread on us when we want to express how amazing we think it is that this philosopher was able to accurately describe the world so long ago.

he then said that he isn't wise , in trutht he knows only the extend of his ignoranc , he then have the realisation , that wisdom is when in the pursuit of knowledge (thus one's betterment) you know enought to know that you have much more to learn :you can learn/improve even more , and being content with taht is wisdom, it is happyness by knowing that if you know that you know nothing , then you could know everything .@@RandomVex

As brilliant as Epicurus was and remains: -- it's worth noting that he is standing on the shoulders of Democritus; a pre-Socratic philosopher who was the first to hypothesize and establish Atomism, i.e. the theory of atoms and the void.
Shame none of his work has survived, as many other Ancient Greek philosophers'
@@magickymajk also democritus was shunned because his belief that atoms move randomly without any higher being pulling the strings went against the idea of "god's plan", so even if his work survived the church would have had his books burned in the medieval ages, in fact dante put democritus in hell in tge divine comedy for this exact reason
And I am amazed atomism has gotten as far as it has gotten too. It reached into the atomic age, but now has been eclipsed by grater theories of matter that show that matter is not quite separated into distinct entities.

"Atom" is just Greek for in-divisible. Epicurus couldn't tell you anything about the properties of atoms. Go talk to a physicist. He or she can tell you a lot about the properties of atoms. Including the fact that they are divisible.

Diogenes had my favorite theory of them all, although I think he took it to the extreme. But the idea that following your own code of morals whilst ignoring the social norms is the way to achieve happiness is a great way to live your life. I wouldn't self love in public though
Diogenes was wrong to say, that we should follow our own code of conduct. We should follow the code of conduct of our creator, Jesus Christ.

@Arbidarb Again, as I said, He took it to the extreme. I meant more in general, the philosophy of not caring about conforming to social norms appeals to me. Not caring about how I'm supposed to talk to a female or how I'm supposed to be dressed. I do what I want and believe is right. And again, that doesn't mean I won't talk nice to a woman I like, or dress up like a clown to a fancy restaurant, but that's more about what I want to do than what other people want me to do

On RUclips you have the advantage of showing pictures/drawings of what you’re saying in real time so I don’t think this is a fair comparison. It does work better than school though imo.

@@fanaticofmetal yes but I would still say you have an advantage on RUclips since visiual content is a very very common thing and a lot of people wouldn`t watch without it. Slideshows are not as common/essential for teachers to do a good (enough) job.
Thats the problem tho they only do the " essential " and honestly a slideshow wont kill a teacher, if im asked to do multiple ones, i expect my teacher to do so too. @@Froahk

I'm going to say it: You're the RUclipsr I wished existed long ago. There are many educational channels, but they don't cover these types of topics. But you, you simply teach, and teach quickly too. I don't want to read a 1k+ word essay or article to understand what made Socrates different from Plato. It's an immediately like when I clicked here. Your political systems video was great because of its simplicity and how well it made others understand it.

He's not really taught at basic school but his name is one of the best known in philosophy/history. You can talk to literal middle schoolers that know who he is because they watched a video or something

Aren’t we missing the second half of the allegory of the cave? I remember man being released from his chains and climbing out into the world of sunlight (true enlightenment). The form of a bird in the allegory would be a living flying bird, not a puppet on a stick.

The cool thing about these videos is that you give us enough info to make every topic very interesting, and the videos being on the shorter side must make people want to go read up on a thing you talked about.
Maybe it wasn't your intention, and maybe not everyone feels the same, but it made me want to look more in depth into Epicurus and Diogenes and maybe even read more on philosophy again.

First, I would like to say how happy it makes me to see people react so well to Epicurus. I've been interested in true philosophy since last year, and time and again I find myself going back to the Doctrines and to the correct view of phenomena that happen all around us every day. My path to _ataraxia_ is not easy, but reading the positive feedback here sure is heartwarming.
Just to add, but I agree with many here that this video is fantastic, and would love to see more content made in this format. A part 2 for philosophy would be nice, if you can.
