Oh man, that Fujitsubo muffler looks BEAUTIFUL. I have a Fujitsubo rear muffler on my JDM twin turbo Subaru Legacy wagon, too; I got it basically brand new from UpGarage a couple years ago. It is SUCH a nice, high quality piece that looks and sounds great. The car has been through a lot of hard driving and abuse (no more winter driving for it though), and that muffler is still looking fresh as ever. Best part is, it was dirt cheap...before shipping, lol. I bought and installed an HKS mid-pipe to go with it, and will eventually do headers and downpipes to hopefully make it sound and perform even better! There's a short little video of it on my channel.
Ok..little tips on installing coilover... 1-get the spring pre-load adjustment collar to zero mm height (means the collar just touching the spring fully seated) 2-adjust ride height using the coilover body adjustment... 3-if it came with pillowball top mount at front, try rotating the top mount with correct holes to gain higher caster (if possible) will greatly improves handling and steering feedback
Tom the only restrictions you only have is the cateletic converter if you replace to a much free flowing cateletic converter it will improve your az1's power

Cheap to refurb all of your old nuts/bolts/brackets when doing a resto as they are done by weight. Just take in a bucket full. There will probably be a minimum charge and you might have to go back home and get some more to meet the weight.
Yeah same experience with Japanese bolts, particularly big bolts like subframe, suspension etc. Modern Suzuki subframe and suspension bolts come with some sort of waxy coating on them as well, not sure what it is exactly.
I believe the yellow/gold colour is a chromate conversion coating of the zinc plated bolts called passivate which increases the resistance to corrosion... Passivated bolts are a lot better than standard zinc coated bolts.
I love the exhaust sound! It's similar to the one on my car (minus the rumble from unequal length headers). That deep drone without excessive raspiness or popping gives it a refined authority that seems to say, "I'm letting you know I'm here, but I'm not trying to show off." Of course the drone can be a bit monotonous on long highway trips, but the majority of the time it puts an evil grin on your face. It's hard to resist the temptation to drive around with the windows down all year long, including in the dead of winter.
Looks like you need to make a customised seat like the formua 1 drivers do! What a great video as per usual, glad to see you practicing what you preach with labelling everything :D

Tom you leveled up your music game haha. Should have slapped those coilovers on, nexens and that light car wouldn't have minded. Love your videos as always. Hope to see you at MATG this year.
Tom, you certainly are a wonderful mechanic. You're organized and methodical, and a problem solver to boot. Fixing a major mechanical problem like this is an inspiration to everyone who likes to tinker with their cars and do their own maintenance. That said, however, if I were you, I think that I would get rid of this car now that it's running. The main reason for my wanting to ditch this machine is the availability of parts for this car. It is a major obstacle to have to do everything mail-order or over the Internet for a car that is a rarity for sure in the US, and might even be rare in Japan. Who needs the hassle to have to wait for weeks for a needed part, and have to deal with high prices, tariffs, and extra shipping charges? Although your videos of this neat little machine have been entertaining, I can't say that I share your love and enthusiasm of this little auto. It's waaaay too small! I'm not a big guy myself, but I would feel uncomfortably cramped in this little go-cart sized car! But, it's your car and if you enjoy working on it and driving it, by all means, go for it! Thanks for an entertaining video, Tom.
It certainly wouldn't be a good choice as an only means of transportation but Tom has a lot of other cars to drive. Other rare Japanese cars as well in fact. Your comment is certainly on point for younger viewers who might want to purchase a rare car though. Mine was an MG Midget. A Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla would have served me better.
Hi Rick, always great to hear from you sir! I love looking at it and driving it, but I gotta be honest, I don't want to work on it very often, unless it's for simple, routine maintenance. I believe this clutch deal was an anomaly, so hopefully it got that out of its system. Yeah, the AZ-1 is not for everyone, but these cars have a nostalgic appeal to me from when I was young and when I was in awe of the engineering and creativity of the Japanese auto industry. It's the least practical thing in the world, there's no doubt about that. 😁
Rick, I agree with your comments about Tom's skill, but I respectfully disagree with the idea of dumping the car just because it's hard to get parts. Did you see how much fun he had getting those parts in? To each their own.
RodShop, It's Tom's car and his hobby, and... his web site. If he gets enjoyment from a technical challenge, then by all means he should continue with it. Getting parts is a MAJOR challenge when you're working on a car, and I can't imagine that's it fun to try to source parts from Japan. You've got all kinds of problems just getting what you need, and Lord help you if you have to exchange a defective part or try to get technical help from a Japanese speaker. I know that he's got a love for these little cars, but let's face it, it's a machine that will eventually break and need parts. As a practical matter, it makes sense to me to go ahead and unload the car when he gets it running reliably. I'd spend the money on a more practical car restoration or upgrade. But, just my opinion, of course! : )
I love your videos, Tom. I find them most entertaining and instructive. I understand perfectly your passion for these tiny cars, but as you say, they're not for everyone. The Japanese are masters at auto engineering, and they took into account every square inch of the available space when they designed it. That said, things are so tight that it's really hard to work on the problems you might encounter. Some of the followers of your journey into car repair have suggested engine replacements with performance motorcycle engines! I don't think that they appreciate the engineering that was involved and it makes replacing the engine almost impossible. There just isn't enough room without butchering the car, destroying the structural integrity. And... the parts problem! Ack! It's not like you can go to the AZ-1 store and get what you need! You solved those logistics problems, so good job, Tom. But, realize that the blown clutch was a relative minor problem, but I'm sure that it took you a lot more time to repair the problem on this car than you would have working on a "conventional" car. I salute your bravery in doing so. Thanks again, sir, and keep 'em coming!
Tom you need a kerosene torpedo heater for that shop! $20 of kerosene gets me 20 hours of comfortable warm shop time! I keep my garage at 50°f when I’m out there. It was 10° outside last night and my heater was about 50/50 running/off. The electric space heaters don’t even come close to the amount of heat a kerosene heater puts out. One would heat your shop no problem. Love the videos dude!
I'm just blown away that you can still source ANY parts for this car. new or used..Also the (imho) incredibly complicated and sophisticated designing and engineering that went into this rather niche vehicle. (I get it though - My wife is Japanese. She can concentrate on something a hundred times more intensely than I can once she sets her mind to it. They are just different than us....ha ha...)
I love that car but truth be told, I'd be terrified taking it out on the road with all the massive grown up vehicles. I drove my '90 Miata for 10 years solid as it was my only vehicle and that was a bit of a cheek clutcher when beside trucks. Can't imagine what this would be like.
Can we take a minute to appreciate the fact that he hasn't turned his channel into a video factory like most mainstream youtubers. Keep it up dude we freaking love the content, I've been watching you for sheesh I think 4 years now.

The car that got me to subscribe is alive again!
Nice! Thanks for the support man!
plumb lines from the chassis down would work as well
Tom you leveled up your music game haha. Should have slapped those coilovers on, nexens and that light car wouldn't have minded. Love your videos as always. Hope to see you at MATG this year.
That coffee break had me. :D
New to your channel. Binged the LS3 Miata build and now this one. Well done, well done, I like the quality over quantity content. Thanks for posting.
Thank you and welcome! I appreciate the kind words and support!
Love the little “woosh” sound effects, keep it fun dude!!
Yaaaay I'm smilin', sweet little thing she is!
What a beaut car!
Thanks Tom.
Geez dude, get a space heater or something. No need to suffer lol.
Haha, no kidding! I have 3 layers on under my coveralls. But still brr.
That lifter tick sounds just like our beloved DSM's. Wonder if mitsu made those lifters LoL. Good work.
Best part of the day!!
Thank you sir! 👍🏻
one of my favorite cars ever! keep it up
Tom you need a kerosene torpedo heater for that shop!
That’s a great tip man, thank you! 👍🏻
Awesome video! Love that car
Thank you!
Nice one Tom. Thanks.
You’re a legend Tom. 😀👍
Cant wait for the next episode
I'm just blown away that you can still source ANY parts for this car. new or used..Also the (imho) incredibly complicated and sophisticated designing and engineering that went into this rather niche vehicle. (I get it though - My wife is Japanese. She can concentrate on something a hundred times more intensely than I can once she sets her mind to it. They are just different than us....ha ha...)
I agree and am amazed as well. It helps that this engine (in various forms) came in a bunch of little cars from this era.
When the music came on at 12 minutes 25 all I thought was... Humans.. Nesika fit as the Kenneth!
awesome video. thanks for taking the time to film and edit this.
Little 50 shot of NOS would liven that beast up!
Oh definitely!
Woohoo!
Been antsy waiting for another episode 👍
Thanks man, appreciate it a ton!
awesome! if i had the choice between some super car an this.. i whould take this in heatbeat. its just so cute! defintely my dream car
I'm with you man, this is 1000 times more fun in my opinion.
I love that car but truth be told, I'd be terrified taking it out on the road with all the massive grown up vehicles. I drove my '90 Miata for 10 years solid as it was my only vehicle and that was a bit of a cheek clutcher when beside trucks. Can't imagine what this would be like.
