Sampras - Lendl 7-6, 6-2, 7-6 Lendl's last match in Melbourne. Career win-loss: 48-10. The last meeting of Sampras and Lendl. Final head-to-head: 5-3 for Sampras.
Lendl lacked the last bit of punch at that time. In the last years of his career he was playing under constant pain due to chronic back problems that forced him to retire soon thereafter. Following his retirement he couldn't play tennis for many, many years. How nice it was to see him debut on the Champions Tour in 2010. Lendl influenced and shaped modern Tennis more than any other player.
@@doctornov7 naa borg was nothing like modern tennis. yea he palyed topspin and thats it. lendl played agressive, a good balance between safe and forcing the point and a lot faster. he was also much better athlete, better coordination, borg was borderline to cringe in that regard. ledl was defently one if not the first modern tennis athlete not just player
Huge respect to Lendl as a 34yo veteran against the top fit no.1 Sampras.. Lendl was almost 2 generation before sampras .. competing w McEnroe & Connors in the early 80s , then with the Wilander , Edberg & Becker in the late 80s. Even the younger generation in the late 80s began to decline in 1994.
Some of the top players who became competitive in the mid 1980's did begin fading by 1994 which is true, Stefan Edberg being 1, Henri Leconte aswell, and Miroslav Mecir but again players such as Andre Agassi, Boris Becker and Sergei Brugera were still going relatively strong.
I been following tennis for 43 years and dont recall anyone wearing a goofy sun shielding cap like Lendl here, something from out of the North Africa corp WW2 campaign..LOL!!
Lendl did not normally have tape on his hands/fingers. I don't know why he's wearing it, or why it's on the left hand. He could have injured his hand and needed support, but it does seem strange to me. Lendl is a US citizen and has been for many years. He applied a long time ago and became a citizen. Lendl was/is pretty awesome. He's my favorite. I have two of his rackets to, but not the one he's using now. I don't know what that thing is
I was always fascinating why Lendl played with that tiny Adidas Adidas GTX Pro-T for all of the 80s when he’d have got more power with the bigger head rackets that were available that time , he may have even won Wimbledon if he had changed mid 80s but he must have really liked playing with it ..
Maybe about the feeling. Federer took until 2015 to change to bigger head. Even Del Porto still struck with old Wilson k factor model until supplies ran out, forcing him to change. Connors took almost 20 years to totally changed from Wilson t2000 to graphite.
I like heavy racket and it's hard to play it with a forehand. But I found it easy now when I do a Sampras & Lendl forehand. My backhand is a Djokovic. My racket is Federer's.
I would like to know too . For some reason all the Australian Open Sampras 90s videos are very good quality . US open are good too but the indoor and French are low
I forgot how slow Lendl played. I wonder if they had time violation rules back then. It's like watching Sharapova play - excruciating! Oh, and that hat - call the fashion police!
Lendl did not play slow. Lendl was the product of his generation, who played faster than the players of the 70 and slower than those of the 90. Everyone is now accustomed to players who hit the ball with a cannon, but they forgot that old tennis where to beat the rival one point, you had to prepare the ground of little to take your rival to where you wanted. That's why I liked tennis so much at the time. That's why today's tennis disgusts me.
Hows the ballerina doing these day? 1 slam in 6 years, 2 in 7 years, with just a little competition consisting of 2 very good players. Should have stuck with ballet. A good foil for Nadal and Novak at best
Well, Federer in the time of Sampras would have been slower, and in Leaver's time, I will not tell you. Each new generation surpasses the last generation. It all boils down to the player's physical training, technology and talent. Or do you think that Borg in the 70 would not have beaten Federer? Never compare players from different eras because it is not fair, and it is not honest either.
Sampras a worse athlete than Federer? Haha what? Until Federer got on the PEDs it wasnt even close. Compare a young Sampras to a young Federer, it's pretty clear who the better natural athlete was, by some distance.

Borg?
I’d say Borg and Lendl are the founding fathers

Amazing to Sampras win the US Open in 1990 with his trusty 85 and in 2002, again with his trusty 85.

Wow, awesome quality with this vid! And the camera angles!
This game was passing over the torch
Lendl looks like a star wars caracter with what he has on his head!
Lendl is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO over the hill here, and he still almost won two sets, with now back left in his body!
Buttttt he didnt. Pistol pete is the goat
@@frankmclain3634 pretty sure Lendl inviting him to train early in Pete’s career helped that along tremendously...
amazing quality!
In the first half of 1994 Sampras was arguably the best ever.
Alastair Faulds
100% agree .
I would say that Arguably Pete Sampras IS the Greatest Grass Court Player ever!!!
Non ! Federer!
to never reach a FO final, yes
In former times Lendl was bit boring 2 me, nowadays I would be happy to see him playing again!
for those yapping about Lendl's head gear, don't forget, the ball kids down there already wear those hats, so there's a lot of them out there :)

Lendl became a US citizen in 1992
Since 1992.

He moved to graphite extremely early compared to McEnroe and Connors. Don't think different racket would of helped him win Wimbledon.

as much as I liked lendl, he looked awful with that cap. His peak is way over here, Sampras the new breed.
Lendl was in the US Open final like eight years in a row 82-91? Only won three, tremendous player-quirky with the sawdust
it was 1981-89. sampras beat agassi in 1990 and edberg courier in 1991
Connors-Krickstein 5 setter was special
Jimbo was unique, pulled off a lot of surprise wins that tournament, all of which I haven't even watched
pretty entertaining-Krickstein was a 5 set specialist, Connors does his douchy thing
@@dm7170 may I ask can you tell me please how good was Jim Courier at the French Open?
THE BH, FH N SERVES OF SAMPRAS ARE VERY SIMILAR TO LENDL'S
It wasn't just cause Pete was younger than Lendl here, he is already a great player now. He was a future number one for a record number of weeks?
...and (still) record number of 6 consecutive end-of-years.
It's Mizuno, like his shoes and outfit.
Sampras Vs. Osama Al Lendl
why wear short sleeve shirts when you have wrist bands that cover your whole arm...
Das ist RTL :-)
Where can I find high definition videos of Sampras's other matches?
Renouk Wijemanne do they exist? Sampras’ career was before HD tv was a thing
I would like to know too . For some reason all the Australian Open Sampras 90s videos are very good quality . US open are good too but the indoor and French are low
Ivan-now representing the French Foreign Legion.
Lendl could play anyone
Sampras (USA) vs Lendl (USA????) WTF?
taped up the left hand ,just incase he needed the other arm to play!
lendl(USA) ??? since when? ( 01.23 )
TheNarutoflo since he became a citizen
Since July 1992.
Lendl's hat is so geeky... I guess he didnt believe in sunscreen...
lol Tennis on VOX channel...today impossible...

So boring
Sampras is so over rated
Compared with Federer ,he is slow , with an average backhand and a much worse athlete
