Here in Hungary, we have a system that shoots rockets with some gases into the air, when a hail storm is arriving. It protects the properties and the farmlands. Thanks to this system, ice breaks down to very small pieces and falls with lots of rain. I can understand that in the US is not possible to cover every area. Hungary is tiny compared to your country.

I got caught skateboarding home trying to beat a derecho that appeared seemingly out of nowhere and had to literally hug a tree to find air to breathe. Was considering smashing in someones front door for safety because I felt like I was about to pass out and die. There were massive hailstones shattering car windows and people looking at me but not waving to help or anything and the sidewalk was flooding over my skateboard and my feet on top of it. I pretty much collapsed as soon as I got inside my own house and it was already dying out but I swear I was wetter than jumping in a swimming pool. This happened in less than 15 minutes and less than 2 mile span north of Rochester NY. Apparently one of the stones had sliced my ear up pretty nasty without me noticing too and ripped parts of my shirt. Had some nasty welts on my back and head. Lived in Colorado almost 15 years. Hailstorms occured with every thunderstorm, without fail. Big 2-3 inch hailstorms happened almost every summer, but it really depended on where you lived. If you lived near the towns of Fountain, Security, or southern Colo Springs, you could bet on your car/home taking damage from at least one monsterous storm. Further north it seemed less common. But there were times we drove out of town so our cars wouldn't be destroyed in a hail bombardment. You learned to check weather reports when you saw the sky darken.

She called home on her cell phone and we couldn't understand a word she was saying, my father thought someone was shooting at her, it sounded like automatic gunfire, albeit entirely out of rhythm. Every window was broken, the dash destroyed, she was under the dash screaming. We lived an hour away, but watching my father head out the door, man on a mission, I just remember it being so sunny and beautiful as I watched him get into his vehicle and go roaring down the road. Thankfully she was okay. The hail had broken the shift lever off of the steering column, what kind of insane power does THAT take? My dad had to use vice grips and he drove her truck home. I was just glad my sister was okay.

That is terrifying! I drove through a thunderstorm here in northern Germany 10 years ago and there was also hail, but most of it quite small grains. Suddenly a loud bang and in the middle of my windshield was a circular hole (no puncture thankfully) and the windshield completely cracked. I was traveling at 70 mph on the highway. I drove down the next exit and had the car towed to the nearest garage, no one believed me when I called and when they saw the windshield they were all surprised and took pictures of it. There were also two big dents on the roof of the car. That is really very rare here in our area. My insurance paid for the damage, but actually asked three times if it really could have been hail and I sent photos to them. Since then I feel very uncomfortable in the car when it hails.

So my dad lives in colorado and he had him and his girlfriends cars completely destroyed from this same hail storm. My dad had a piece of shit truck he didnt care about but he really cared about a 92 Camry that he had. It was his stepfathers who just passed away a few months prior. Drove it all the way from Boston to Co. Springs and didnt have a single problem. He actually planned on giving it to my older sister when she got her license. But the car was absolutely demolished from this hailstorm. It and the other 2 cars they had were totaled from the sheer amount of hail that came down in Fountain that day. The storm did so much damaged that it even broke the sealant in his sunroom roof from how much it was warping the metal and the ceiling. This storm was so bad that it took until last year for all the damages done to the house to be repaired, due to the companies in Colorado being so backed up from how many peoples homes were hit. Hail is no joke and I'm glad we dont get it often here in Arkansas.
