    Thanks for the tips on the carburetor. I didn't realize while cleaning it that there was a main jet on the top of the carb. Initially i thought it was just a screw holding the carb together. This helped me get my 8hp b&s on my snapper riding mower working again!

    Those are fine engines.
    Copper spray a gasket, and back in it goes.
    Adapt, and overcome, as they say!
    I bet Stens or others make them.
    BTW, I have one of those in a '85 MTD rear engine rider that a neighbor tossed. Changed the oil, cleaned the carb, been using it for almost 10 years. Still runs strong.

    Hello Jeff new subscriber here. I found a good deal on a Bobcat walk behind mower that had a blown Kawasaki 14 horsepower motor. The next owner used a Briggs 14 horsepower motor and that is where I come in. You sound like you are from the Pittsburgh area but I could be way off. It is getting cold here but thanks for your information.

    The old school way to deal with an unavailable head gasket and/or do a cheap compression increase is make one out of copper sheet, they can be annealed for reuse over & over.

    I added some gas to mine today Jan 19 2023 and it started running violently poorly.
    Shaking and vibrating crazily, it normally starts beautifully
    Does snow/water affect the gas like that? Also wondering if the cold damaged anything on startup or bent the crank key

    Awesome video. Great motor project. i have a 8 horsepower B and S flat motor in my troy built lawn tractor. i ordered and got a brand new carburetor and head gasket on ebay. i Love the your attention to the details. i just subscribed to your channel and hit the bell thing too. :)

  • @poochie49

    I have a similar B & S engine model 170402 built in 1967. It worked when I took it off a snowblower a few months ago. I did re build the carb recently. I can't get it started. Any ideas? Compression is around 52 PSI (which is the same reading I'm getting from 2 other engines that run fine). I do definitely have spark. I replaced the head gasket a few days ago. Now when I pour some fuel into the sprak plug hole and replace the plug I still get no fire at all. I also checked the valves for leakage but when I put some fuel on them when they were closed I had no leakage at all so they seem to be OK. Timing? Spark plug?...it worked on my other engines. So what other options should I look at? I appreciate your videos .

    • @JeffsLittleEngineService
      @JeffsLittleEngineService  2 года назад

      Sounds like no spark I would replace the points and condenser or upgrade to non points style coil/magneto.

    • @poochie49
      @poochie49 2 года назад

      @@JeffsLittleEngineService I already replaced the points with an electronic magneto and it is sparking. I think I will check the valves and clean and lap them to see if it gives more compression. Should be close to 100PSI what I'm getting is about 55 right now.

    I have bought 4 Briggs parts and services catalogs off of eBay for repair information and to ID parts. I have gotten many good deals on eBay by looking up parts by the factory part numbers. Many of the sellers don't even know what their parts fit, so they just list them by the parts number rather then list them by what model they fit.

      Start by making sure you have a good charged battery. Check that the main fuse is not blown(usually located by the battery). Solenoids fail often. Ignition switches fail when they can get rusty at the connections on the back. Make sure starter motor is not locked up from rust. Good luck

    I have the same engine I bought about 8 months ago. The only difference I see is mine has a chrome air cleaner top. I don't buy vertical shaft engines as the norm, but the price was cheap enough I will resell it or part it out and save any parts that can be used on a side shaft engine.

    Jeff, what i did with head gaskets to reuse them was to put a coat of copper coat spray on them or silver spray paint. Something thats in silver paint that will seal them up as long as they aren't torn. Yours looked fine in your video. 👍Roger

    To clean an engine prior to painting gas and a paint brush are handy to soften old grease. Save the brake kleen for last to remove petroleum distillates. To remove rust cheap and easy like on that tin piece, soak in whatever vinegar you have handy.

    What a diode is is a one way check valve for electricity what's coming off the alternator is alternating current hidden reason why it's called an alternator and the diode simply makes it DC so that way it charges your battery and do whatever else it needs to do

  • @aworkingmanspride2494
    @aworkingmanspride2494 3 года назад +1

    That diode does not decrease voltage what it does is on allows current to flow one way it is basically like a check valve and if you bypass it what will happen is your stator underneath your flywheel which charges your battery will burn up

    Thats crazy, they made tons and tons of those engines, a lot of okd school snapper rers use that engine, lots of things did. I guess when the new Briggs took over parts on the old stuff started being discontinued. Gotta find some new old stock on ebay, like the Tecumseh. But if thats that metal head gasket, it should be fine, those were reusable unlike the cardboard material made ones later.

    Strip it down further Jeff.. you’ve gone as far as painting it, was hoping we’d see you tear further into it and give it new rings...
