No at the time goku was the strongest until vegeta did the hyperbolic time chamber training and then when goku got out he was stronger again and then gohan went ssj2
He caused to much pain, even though he changed later in the show, he was to proud, goku was always humble and had compassion even with the baddest enemies, thats why he has all the glory :p

Hahaha I always laughed at Vegeta here, he took so long to understand, raising his base power had nothing to do with being a super Saiyan, Goku didn't become one because he was strong, neither did Trunks, it was the true rage inside them that transformed them, and Vegeta got so mad at not understanding that he transformed himself xD Of course in Majin Buu saga Super Saiyan is a laughing matter, they transform into super saiyan 1 and 2 like it was a simple game, I don't know if they care about controlling the rage or all that crap anymore xD
Vegeta comes ssj because of his internal frustation when he felt much less strong than goku and trunks ( its the same feeling that goku and trunks felt just before becoming ssj but goku and trunks felt frustated by different reasons). What makes a sayan become to a ssj is the frustation, not the reason of being frustrated. In the history we unknow the reason why vegeta can transform to a ssj2, but its not impossible because we unknow what happened to vegeta between cell saga and buu saga (between 7 years i think). It probably was the same reason because at the end of cell saga he was the weaker power between the sayans (goku,trunks and gohan). Sorry for my english, im from Spain xD.

I think he willed himself into becoming a super saiyan, without having to rely on the death of someone else.
They lost something precious to them and became angry, that's the source of the Super Saiyan, Goku explains this to Gohan in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Vegeta couldn't take being weaker than Goku anymore, this drove him madly angry, that spurting rage turned him into a Super Saiyan. PD: We are all saying the same thing over and over again with different words.
Vegeta also did not let his feelings guide him to higher strength. Gohan and Goku used the pain of loss. Vegeta used anger. Needless to say, this is why he was always knocked out of Super Saiyan, while Gohan and Goku would get up, still BLAZING GOLDEN and determined to protect those they love.
Vegeta may not be perfect, but he is the perfect representation of human nature. Everyone has an evil side, full of hatred and malice, but no matter how evil you are, there is always something or someone, that can bring out the good in you. Doesn't matter that vegeta hasn't really beat a villain vegeta has saved goku more times than goku saved the earth lol vegeta just kicks ass and is a true sayain prince great tribute.

In that case I understand word "anti-hero" differently. What he FINALLY did, was respecting Goku and understanding, admiting that Goku is stronger than him and no matter of that fact he was friend to Goku and even agreed to do fusion with him. +he was strong enough to get out from Majin Vegeta course and died for his family and Goku (without any hope with with him after death). In my opinion, he is hero. And transformation from bad to good makes him even more of a hero.
