It scares me a lot because when you start out, you might think this is what I want and maybe ignore other areas you probably would have worked so well in. I think maybe when you start out don't rush the niching process. Take your time to figure your niche out. For example for now the one thing I know is I am not interested in dealing with addiction, I found it to be exhausting. With teenagers which I worked with a lot I really enjoyed it as well as adults. It's tough - groups I thought I wouldn't like them but being in schools helped me see how great working with groups actually was and how effective and how much I enjoyed groups, especially teenagers. I like how you put it that pay attention to how energized you felt after the session.
It does take time to find your niche! I think everyone should start out in a place where they have access to multiple types of populations so they can learn who/what they like working with. Then you narrow it down as you go through your career. And you’re not married to a niche! You can always change it later on
