East coast beaches are just as good ,if not better,e.g Kalladay beach Batticaloa with less people around.Problem is poor infrastructure so if you only have 14 days,2 of which likely will be from/to Colombo airport,that doesnt leave much time for travelling around so most people go to the SWest as its the closest and easiest to get to by bus or train .Of course this makes the economic problems that the east has worse so its a vicious circle.
