[2016 Youth Meets ICH] Video 4. Kie Making

This video is about the methods of making Tongan fine mats, kie. Kie are used for special events, such as birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations in Tonga. Kie heritage is also representative of communal work and the gathering of the community’s women who share stories while working.
ICHCAP supports youth participation in ICH safeguarding by undertaking a new project, Video Creation with the Young Generation: Youth Meets ICH. This project is aiming to enhance the younger generations’ awareness and understanding about intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Through this project, young people can conduct interviews, make videos, and share their work with others. We hope that everyone participating will be inspired by ICH and the stories we can tell through video.

Tika. So is this how they weave the mats into ta'ovala? Or thats what it looks like to me. Also this is a different process from making the ngatu or tapa cloth?

Yes this is a different but similar process of ngatu making. Ta'ovala are the smaller woven mats also the big mats are also used as a big taovala worn by the liongi
