For Immediate Release
Dream Theater's upcoming release, "Distance Over Time", comes out in February, 2019. To announce the details of the band's most recent offering, Dream Theater has enlisted the help of fans to spread the word about the release and even to break the news of the record release date, cover artwork, and to share the first taste of never before heard music. With this album, a return to the band's roots, Dream Theater hoped to create a fan engagement experience unlike any previously undertaken.
To lead into the initial release of material, an Alternate Reality Game was launched. This game encompassed a "treasure hunt" whereby fans were able to search for clues hidden in various photos, video, social media posts, and more. Cooperation to host the Alternate Reality Game focused on various fan communities. The band's fan club, forum members and Reddit each brought in technical expertise to create puzzles for the participants. Each and every week, a new puzzle would be released, often in the form of a candid photo or video from the studio where Dream Theater recorded their latest album. This would contain a piece of the puzzle - a clue to be used in the process of solving that week's mystery. The puzzles were usually based on some encryption scheme or hiding information in the files, such as hiding a zipped file with text in an image file, or hiding text within the spectrogram of an audio file. One puzzle had the fans decoding Morse Code on a light diode of recording equipment, while another had the fans decoding a touch tone number from a phone call. Fans had to solve a sonogram, sudoku puzzle, reverse engineer an encryption scheme to find a key that would decrypt a specific text. They had to solve crosswords and trivia games. Fans were eager to participate, and often worked together to collectively solve the puzzles within hours of their release.
Ultimately, there would be one person - one fan who would be the first to solve the final clue. As their prize, this fan would be the first person to possess previously unreleased Dream Theater content. The very first person outside the band to have possession of any new music, new artwork, new album title. It would be the fans who would solve the puzzle, complete the game and break the news of the release, disseminating this brand new Dream Theater news to the world from their personal online presence.
It is the hope of Dream Theater to have created a fun and engaging fan experience. A unique manner to amp up the excitement for the new release, and to involve the band's fanbase in a new and interesting way. On behalf of Dream Theater - congratulations to the winner, and thank you to everyone who participated.

Petrucci wearing Under Armour, Adidas, *and* Nike
No, in fact all brands wear Petrucci's godly body
And Beard!
@Jon Doe
Petrucci goes to the Gyms since 2005 so yeah
Pull Me Under Armour
Falling into infinity style!
DT really needs an album like Falling Into Infinity
@@gabrielfelix7892 yes.. I think that just portnoy have the FII sound with Sons of Apollo and The Winery Dogs today... DT need it too
@@L3O. Hearing this piece, I think they'll bring back this style
0:42 - Just Let Me Breathe
0:54 - Hell's Kitchen
@@gabrielfelix7892 theyve gone way too far down the road of doing generic metal but more complex for too long now. Theyll never go back to that more laid back less complex style. I wish they would but i cant see it happening at this point.
How is it possible that the drums sound better in this amateur video than in the album snippet they have released (and also than in the past 2 albums)? It sounds natural, it sounds clean, there are nice dynamics there that for some reason get lost in the mix and all we get is a drum machine. Mangini is an excellent drummer, why not letting him sound as natural as possible?
Also, I sure hope Myung is as audible as here, that bass riff is amazing.
Honestly, I´m not trying to hate based on a 30 second snippet, but I was thinking the EXACT same thing! Kinda funny actually...
Yea, i would love an album whitout sound remastering, but sure vocals will suck lol
I really hope that wasnt the final mix in the 30 second snippet. I sounded super compressed which surprised me as this is not 2002.
@@brunnlake Yeah, and it's even worse if you think that Six Degrees is from 2002 and the mix was much better than the snippet (and their last few albums too).
Let's just hope RUclips is just overcompressing the sound...
Adrian Merida yeah I remember the studio snippets from when they recorded that album. Even those very low res videos sounded better :P
Oh man that bass intro !
THERE HAD BETTER BE A MAKING OF DISTANCE OVER TIME IN THE STUDIO DVD I SWEAR TO GOD
David Oakes it won’t be the same without portnoy behind the camera 😪
@@ryantimmins5567 for god sake, could you not....
@@ryantimmins5567 they have changed okay, and stop complaining about mp leaving the band. yes portnoy is entertaining, you can watch portnoy at soa.
@@saulsolis actually dvd is okay, so they could make that more
@@saulsolis lol
Getting a Rush vibe.
Always
Not nearly as heavy, how so?
Not really
was thinking exactly the same!
Freeze me and wake me up in February please
Please don't make it stop like that 😭
I want more...
Agree
Mangini’s arms must be tired as all hell from having the hi hats and crashes all up so high. But in all seriousness I’m so hyped!
But even with traditional crash stand, he still lift cymbals that high...
Ever seen Simon Philips’ setup?
Total Rush vibes! #eargasm
its sound great...can't wait for the release...
Ooooo I’m really digging the feel of this. Good stuff guys!
That was fucking great. Though it's complex, it still sounds groovy.
It's not entirely the same but I'm digging the Rush Anthem/ Fly By Night Era vibe.
OMG, do you really compare Rush to DT? Come on. Who on DT could write lyrics like Rush?
@@u.v.s.5583 irrelevant as this snippet doesn't have any vocals
Cygnus X 1
The best band. I love you dream thetaer.
Love the double tempo drums on this riff! Hope they improvise on it live a bit
No James...NO FAIR! Can’t wait til Atlanta guys; stay healthy and happy til then!🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
I wish I could just hibernate until the album comes out! Waiting is not something I do well.
Myung always sitting down for that proper technique in the studio
Just a comment to tell the world that I knew this before the release HAHAHA
TAI REFLECTIONS / STARRYSKY you solved the puzzle?
Just a comment to remind you that I knew before you did ! :D (but still I wasn't the first :/ )
TAI REFLECTIONS / STARRYSKY
I’m totla mad
@@joachimw-m3478 I think I was the first :D So, hi!
My body is ready
Can't wait for the new album
Sound amazing for an opener!!!!
Is there a video of S2N played live? An amazing track. If they haven’t played , they have to play.
Like it very much!
I wish Mangini would graduate from the 80’s cymbal height and brilliant finishes lol I think it really effects and constrains his fluidity around the kit. It takes so much movement, time and effort for just two crashes lol.
His playing in general lacks any soul. He's so boring
Yeah, something about watching him have to reach so high to hit those cymbals bugs the shit out of me.
@@sw1tched lmao idiot of the year award
Mangini é um músico extraordinário!
there's no way he enjoys that drum kit
Kind of sounds like change of seasons a little.
You wish
@@kasmeria lol why do i wish? that beginning riff by petrucci sounds quite a bit like one section of it.
can't wait to hear what happens to Nefarious in this astonishing sequel, amirite boys
I'm a sucker for this sound!! Sounds somewhat like Rush, let's hope for the best guys
I'm pretty sure this is the song "Barstool Warriors"
That bass line better be the album opener or I'm taking it back
WOW
Would love to hear MM tuning his Snare higher.
Lyric by John Myung
definitely reminds me a little bit of images and words! interesting!! but i expect heavier stuff also!!
Myung!
S2N
That was my guess. I have not heard it yet. Sounds great!
I wanna be there!!!! I want to sing in that band!!!! I wanna sing along with labrie and jam with the others!!!
Awesome! Hope it's instrumental.
It's not
I'm soaked
Cool
All is interesting..!!
LaBrie must have been bored standing there with nothing to sing. LOL
sick
S2N!
Wow
thats nice
Why are neither of the guitar amps plugged into or turned on?
anybody that has the unreleased song..... PLEASE PLEASE share it
Nice
my god! those hihats could not be worst placed. imagine having your arms raised for a full concert
Sounds quite Rushy.
Sorry but I am so curious about this , how about their neighbour if DT are jamming ? Are they didn't disturb their neighbours ? 🤔😂
I know already the songs on this album are going to sound better live. The snippet was one of the most over produced things I've ever heard. I don't know how Petrucci produced Train of Thought but all the albums after it are overproduced. I can accept the fact that they won't go back to analogue because it's a pain but it added a whole other layer of quality to the music. Hence I bring up Train of Thought as it is still well mixed but was also recorded digitally, why did they have to change it?
This sounds like la villa strangiato from rush
The amps are not powered and without mics...
Viper King?
S2N
MHIGH Mangini
signal to noise
At Wit's End ?
Sounding like I&W mixed with a little Falling into Infinity
did you video the whole album for youtube? why limit yourself to technical limitations of the past?
Very very scary album Cover Terminator 2 vibe anyone ?
Mikes cymbal reach looks a bit of a stretch, price you pay for a cool set lol
Normally the hi-hats are placed much lower. I'm assuming they were raised for recording.
La villa de Strangiato, Rush? ruclips.net/video/UNilsLf6eW4/видео.html
S2n
Why DT sounds like RATM?
You goddamn promised to go back to heavy heavy roots! To goddamn experiment, break new ground, challenge! WHY THE HELL are you doing the same?
Even train of thought has its soft and prog moments, to judge an album after listening to a minute of writing is very dumb.
@@jleffel6969 If you think Black clouds and Silver Linings sounds the same as A Dramatic Turn of Events, and either of those sound the same as The Astonishing then you are listening to the wrong genre of music.
Dude...it’s a one minute teaser from an ENTIRE hour-long album!!
@@jleffel6969 lol
Where is Portnoy :)
Try Sons of Apollo. He left the Dream Theater 8 years ago.
@@dreamtheaterclub Hehehe just kidding, can't wait for the new album ;)
Mangini and his eternal mechanical battery. The drums on Dream Theater's songs have not evolved into anything since A Dramatic Turn of Events. It's just my opinion
Message for Labrie: stop dying your hair!
I miss mike..,:( especialy hi-hat techniq...,
get over it
seriously get over it.
We all do man.
Yups, mangina hi-hat tech very suck.., no grove.., FLAAATTTTTTTTTT......
@@amienmukromin7147 In what way is it flat? I have played drums over 15 years and imo Mangini has some insane hihat doubles/rolls. If you like Portnoys playing more that's one thing but don't degrade Mangini because you're upset still about Portnoy.
What a HORRIBLE invisible bass tone.
sounds more like di to me. Is probably gonna be eqed to hell lol dont worry Im sure the post processing still has to happen over this.
the cover sucks
S2N is one of my faves off the new album, great riffs, bass lines, beast drumming, LTE-esque solo, very groovy and heavy outro and 🔥keyboard solo.
They nerd yo play live right now!
that groovy outro... pure eargasm
The best LaBrie has sounded in years!!
I cant stop laugh haha
HAHAHHAHAHAHA
If he does this the entire album... Album of the year
🤣
Hahaha! You cheeky fucker
Mangini's rockface is actually because he is having trouble reaching those high cymbals
He's not
Sounds like Rush. Not that it's a surprise. I often think DT is at it's best when they thay're Rush-esque.
Amazing work! Not the style I expected, but it sounds solid!
Falling into infinity vibes!
mike mangini nailing every single beat .
0:43 JLB’s mind:
”Shoulda Woulda Coulda?”
Thats sound like awake but with Mangini. God !!! Sound is f***** HUGE !!!!!
This snippet sounds rather promising. The implication of 'song 10' however, appears less reassuring. In order the fit 10 (or more) songs onto a single CD album suggests and average track running time of 6-8 mins, if my maths is correct. In the self-titled album, the band made a conscientious decision to lean towards shorter songs with the obvious exception of Illumination Theory. The shorter songs formats inevitably lead to stylistic approach deviating from the DT's renowned brand of extended songs with all the soloing and creative instrumentation. This is what I believe has garnered the bands devout fan base (definitely me) throughout their existence. I hope they don't become tempted to compromise that... Please bring on all the unapologetic pretentious beauty you guys are capable of and don't let music industry trends dictate the direction of your latest offerings.
You were right about the song durations! They released the song list today@
Need something long like glass prison..
want more and more...
Que bueno que subieran mas videos de la grabacion y detras de camaras de esa ocasion
We want that drum sound and that bass sound on the album ! Thank you !
LaBrie missed his cue.
S2N
S2N!!!!!
God I can't wait for this new record
Getting Falling Into Infinity vibes in the beginning and end, with Soen and Tool in the middle. Super excited for this one.
i was waiting the moment.... labrie never sang. =(
The melody gets so sexy at the end...can’t wait for this album
Is there a full vid or at least a longer one of them in the studio playing S2n (the song in this vid) or other tracks from Distance Over Time?
James adopts the less is more approach to song writing by the looks
I wanna play bass now
Огонь!!!! 💥
So hype for this album
Great work James 🤭
