There are different ways to clip a bird's wings. This video demonstrates how I personally clip my parrots, including my 3 Pacific Parrotlets.
Parrots are all unique - what works well for one bird and/or species may not work well for another. Always consult your qualified avian vet. Parrots should always be caged or harnessed when taken outside. No parrots were harmed in the making of this video.

Ha... Guess I have to teach some idiots here a lesson in the comment section.
    1. A clipped parrot can still fly enough without going too far.
    2. It doesn't hurt if a parrot is being clipped carefully. (It's like clipping your toe nails)
    3. The reason for them being clipped is mostly for so that they can explore freely, in more open spaces (like your house) than being in a bird cage isolated for a long time. (Ironic)
    4. It's a technique used too for new pet birds getting comfortable with their environment outside the cage, without panicky flying around, possibly hitting a transparent object and stressfully hurting or killing itself at the process.
    5. To put it simple, clipping a bird is like a parent being strict to their child, by giving the child limits, or else the child might do something that'll be painful or worse.
If you think a parent who wants to protect their child is cruel, then I pity your parents for having you :p
Anyway, I hope this comment is always on top so that some concerned people be advised, I know not all everyone agrees with this kind of thing, but if you know what you're doing, then do it as long as they can still explore freely. (I recommend going to a vet to clip a parrot's wing if you're a beginner)
    6. It's not bad if the bird is still comfortable and happy.

yes and people don't understand that a bird probably has a way better life with these kinds of people, that let them explore the house and take care of them then ppl who buy them just for looks, having. a bird in a cage for years is so sad

You have put up a good argument and I can see that in some striations clipping flight feathers may be the best option. I have a rescue parrot that once had its wing broken and when I got it it couldn't fly. It will never be able to. He is as happy as the other parrots he lives with. We have lots of ladders for him to get from the floor to the cages. He struggles to mate but apart from that happy. So clipping wings doesn't mean sad birds. :0)

Why do you clip a birds wings? Its animal abuse. They fly in nature miles every day. Flying is their natural instinct, they are birds. And you don’t know if it hurts them mentally. How would you feel if a bigger creature takes away your possibility to run? You guys are disgusting.
If you can’t handle a bird, don’t buy a bird.
I have seven cockatiels and none of them is clipped (here in Germany it is considered animal abuse). They fly and they are tame. They come on my finger and they fly on my shoulders if they want to. They are not getting forced to do it with taking away their flying instinct. To me that is pathetic.
And besides that, you said you do it because you are being strict like being strict with a child? Lol would you make your child paraplegic to protect it from harm? omg that is so dumb unbelievable!
Keep your house safe and train your birds. If you can’t do that, buy a dog or a hamster instead. But stop abusing birds just because your ego is happy.

@@orwellianpepe7660 Frist of all, amazing Job in demonizing the wing clipping situations and making people feel guilty even tho some people are just thinking abt their safety. Round of applause to you😀👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Do you want a medal for being so amazing with birds? Or a trophy? Second of all, while many do out of their own convenience, many also do it for their bird’s safety. My friend who didn’t like to clip got her cockatiel’s wings clipped because he flew into a window and got a concussion. In all seriousness, good for you that you have birds that are safe when flighted. But not every bird is like yours! I personally don’t like to clip but I understand why people do and I don’t go making ppl feel guilty for keeping their bird safe. Safety should *always* come first when thinking about any pet and if it really was the safest option then I don’t judge. I do apologize for my sarcasm at the beginning, it’s just not very fun seeing people make other ppl feel guilty for trying to do what’s best for their bird. Anyways, I hope you have a wonderful day.

So the best thing to do is to clip ‘em as long as it wouldn’t hurt them and it would keep them safe. You are responsible for not openning windows hiding dangerous things etc. Clipping the bird's wings is a lazy unresponsible way for owners to "keep their birds safe". Be a good owner for once. I have a 5 months old budgie. He's happy and hasn't been clipped once. I never needed to do this. On his 1st day he didn't fly very well and did slap somethings with his wings but he learned in an hour. He stopped slapping around and now he's a pro and knows what he is doing. Birds love flying. Let them be themselves.

    1. Clipping does not hurt them.
    2. Flight feathers can grow back.
    3. Clipping is used as a way to try to tame birds easier, possibly stop them from flying into walls and mirrors, possibly stop them from flying away if doors and or windows were open by accident and possibly stopping them from using flying as a way to attack out of aggression (to owners)

Ok the tame thing i can understand but do it in an open area, not your house and clipping them. And it doesn't hurt them, but it takes away they're freedom and makes them panic. And it takes like 1 to 2 years fro them to grow back.

    Let me explain, friends.
The little bird is not being hurt. The wings are clipped so she cannot fly very far. Her feathers will grow back. (Thats what the blood feathers are, the feathers growing back)
    1. The little bird is not wild. She is used to being held and is not scared or being hurt.
    2. Her wings being clipped prevents her from flying into windows or walls. Or getting lost and captured by cats or other animals.
    3. She can still fly! Just not very far.. She can glide to the ground. She will not fall. (Glide means she spreads her wings and slowly moves to the ground, like a slow airplane.)
When I was young I did not know the bird wasn't hurt when feathers got clipped.
    I never clipped them.
My bird crashed into a wall almost every time she left the cage. She broke her wing.
If I had been old enough to realize this, my bird would've had her wings clipped. She probably would have lived much longer than two years.

Clipping a birds wings doesn’t hurt them, it’s only a few feathers and it’ll grow back! The reason why this is helpful is when you first get a budgie. If the budgie can fly and it doesn’t trust you yet, it can fly into a wall or a mirror, and can get severely injured. Clipping a birds wings doesn’t hurt them at all and they’ll grow back. So if you are worried that they won’t be able to fly again, they’ll fly again once the feathers grow back. The reason for clipping a budgies wing is just for their safety. If you do get one you should consider getting one clipped or not clipped, but it’s ultimately your choice. (Make sure to get it done by a professional or be really careful though)
Let me repeat this one more time, Clipping a birds wings is for the birds safety and they don’t get hurt and the feathers will grow back and they can fly.

A little late but let me explain some stuff.
    1. Clipping is necessary for domesticated birds, they'll fly into the wall or a window and injure themselves if they aren't clipped. Unless, of course you keep them in a cage 24/7. ( if you do, you shouldn't have a bird, they need to fly. )
    2. They can still fly with their wings clipped, just not as far, they glide to the ground or their perch.
    3. It's not painful, it's pretty much like cutting hair, the bird doesn't feel the wings being clipped. If the bird starts acting like it's in pain, squawking, etc it's either A: It's scared ( birds may be scared the first time their wings are clipped since it's a new experience. ). Or, B: You've cut too much and hurt the bird, if that happens please get them to a vet as quick as you can to assess what happened and how severe it is.
All of you posting hate comments need to chill, I'm willing to bet that 90% of the people posting hateful things don't even own birds.

Gerda B this is false. If you train your bird it won't fly into Windows. I agree that maybe at first you have to clip them to be able to tame them but once they grow back you shouldn't clip them again. And even then, having them clipped while they're not 100% trusting of you makes them feel trapped. A part of taming and gaining trust is allowing the bird to leave or get away from you when they don't feel safe. That way they know you're not trying to hurt them. This obviously shouldn't be done out of the cage at first if they're flighted but they should be able to fly around their cage and gain some distance from you if they feel threatened by you.

I don't believe in clipping birds wings. But young birds/birds not trained, clipping the wings could be safer for training and trust. But they may have to. If they're roofs are tall and high, if there are nails sticking out of the walls. She did her research, like about blood feathers and where to cut. They're her birds, they were not hurt. And that is what matters (if the bird was harmed). Also bird feathers grow back.

Btw, clipped feathers will fall out and be replaced by new ones, it is a natural process and the bird will fly again with no lasting damage.
*Don't clip your bird if you aren't a professional*
And just don't clip them it's unnecessary and if your house is dangerous than don't get a bird. Having its wings clipped causes its muscles to be strained and can leave lasting damage.

Though I personally do not agree with clipping wings at all the comments in this video are stupid and arrogant. Clipping is used for when birds flying in a house is problematic. If a bird doesn’t know when a window is in front of them they could get a concussion and die. If birds don’t know where something dangerous is they could die. Depending on the house you live in it may or may not be necessary. All of my birds can fly as they are trained where windows are but not all birds know what to do. It is not abuse to clip a birds feathers unless it is unnecessary. It does not hurt them if you are doing it properly like she is in this video. If it’s done wrong that will hurt them. She is not abusing her birds. Let me repeat SHE IS NOT ABUSING HER BIRDS.

Just going to say this because i was just reading through the comments and people are lowkey just stupid. Cutting a birds wings is unnatural yes. But so's keeping a bird inside and feeding it freshly cut fruit and vegetables and warming up their food and taking them to a vet. People clip their birds wings for the birds safety especially parrots and babies are at risk of killing themself or breaking their beak there is no way to make your house "bird safe" because they can literally fly into a wall the only way to keep a bird safe inside is to clip their wings or train them. You cant train a bird youve only had for a few weeks and its extremely dangerous for baby birds to fly if they are new to the environment. Just be thankful this lady is teaching you the proper way to clip the wings unlike how ive seen people trim them before where its caused infection, further feather plucking and overall discomfort to the bird. The point of having a pet is to keep it safe and give it the longest happiest life possible which means protecting it from injury and providing it a safe and healthy environment

And what’s better, a bird in its cage all day for it’s safety or roaming around the house clipped but free to walk around for its safety. Not the best options but I would choose the second option. Bird proofing your home isn’t 100% guaranteed no accidents will happen. My friend’s bird got a concussion in a bird proofed home. Please don’t say it’s cruelty. I also understand that clipping the wings won't hurt the bird if done properly by a professional, yet, with that being said, I don't think I will ever have the heart to do it, because to me, taking a bird his ability to fly temporary, will stress him out, and for a selfish reason too.

As someone who has a cockatiel, my birds name is totoro, totoro can’t control her flying and ends up hitting the wall. She hit the wall so much that she ended up hurting herself and causing one of her eyes to get infected. It took weeks to get her to be better! The doctor recommended that the best thing to do is clip her wings until she learn to fly a bit better.. I felt bad but realized that if we didn’t she could get worse and ultimately die. Once we clipped her wings she slowly started to learn to fly better and better ... sometimes it necessary to clip their wings in this case totoros. im a licensed vet, and i can just say clipping is not like cutting off someones legs. firstly, legs dont grow back. secondly, amputation and clipping both are a solution to health problems. thirdly, birds are only seriously harmed when the vet is inexperienced and cuts too far along the feathers. this does not hurt the birds, and can help with the birds flying into walls (which can also cause shock) or being trained. think about this. a bird flies into a wall and is going through severe shock plus the fact it hurt. still think it should fly freely ? a birds wings get clipped, it can still fly, and it doesn’t hurt, if done properly and it no longer gets hurt. clipping isn’t wrong but neither is not clipping. plus the fact if you clip feathers you can also remove blood feathers. blood feathers are hollow so blood travels easily through it and if not properly cared for the bird can bleed to death.

These people are ignorant sis. just ignore them. 💕 best regards

The Greatest Of All Time that probably comes from the idea that it can be a stressful situation. for example, the bird can become nervous around you if you yourself do it so its usually best to let a vet do it so the foundation of friendship stays there. i’ve heard of owners who tried to clip the wings, and cut a blood feather which could most definitely shorten a life span since budgies don’t have much blood to lose and this could make them lose a lot of blood. I mostly have people come in saying that they were going to, but decided against it since they weren’t qualified. 3 factors that can potentially make the birds lifespan shorter (that can be avoided) are 1. The bird loses trust and becomes nervous around you for clipping its wings (yourself not the vet) and it becomes stressed. 2. You cut a blood feather and the bird bleeds out. 3. You cut above a covert, the bird can NOT fly this causes stress/a predator has easy access to them (i.e a cat or dog) All of these can be avoided by taking your budgie or macaw to a qualified avian vet. They should still be able to fly, but not to the point where they endanger themselves. this can also be avoided by doing flight training. they can also have a shorter lifespan if they’re flying and for example, fly into a wall and fall into a boiling pot of water. Whatever someone does is just personal preference but it bugs me when they force their ideas on others even after not being educated.

Except for some rare and for the most part temporary medical conditions, the simply is no justifyable reason to clip a birds wings. While it’s true that the procedure isn’t physically painful, it is still a most unpleasant experience for them - imagine someone you love inexplicably and forcibly rendering you a paraplegic, simply because you chew the tops of doors, or poo on their best sofa, or because they don’t think your liberty is worth the effort of being vigilant about open doors and windows? And it’s not the actual procedure so much as it’s effects that are catastrophic for companion birds. These beautiful but still very much wild creatures already sacrifice SO MUCH in order to live with us humans, it is height of selfish disregard for them to think, “this flying business is a bit inconvenient, let’s get rid of it”. Flying is why birds stopped being dinosaurs, it’s what birds do. Yes they can get from A to B by walking, just as we could, theoretically at least, crawl everywhere we needed to go - as in it would be tedious, painful and hugely frustrating but we could still get around? Well no, not really, so what gives me the right to transform my beautiful boy, who in the wild would have routinely covered >200 km on the wing everyday, into a cripple who can only awkwardly and nervously struggle to limp a few meters. And most parrots rarely walk on the ground. The like to be as high up as possible. This is because as prey animals the ground is not safe. So while a clipped bird might seem content when they’re in your company, all those hours when you’re at work or somewhere else, the bird is an anxious, stressed out and hyper vigilant mess, because he doesn’t know when that dog or that eagle is coming back, but when it does he knows HE HAS NO MEANS OF ESCAPING IT, how utterly terrifying that must be, it’s no wonder so many of these mutilated birds are also feather pluckers, biters or have other behaviour problems (what a misnomer, it’s the owners with the behaviour problem, the bird’s “behaviours” are more accurately described as being symptomatic of trauma and abuse). And then there’s all the physical problems wing clipping causes. For the most part a bird’s wing serve no other function but flying, otherwise they’re just extra food for predators. Their entire being assumes flight will be happening and functions accordingly, ie their muscular, digestive, skeletal, neurological , and I can’t remember what other systems are all calibrated towards regular flight, remove this and things go pear shape, for example obese , unhealthy birds (It takes a lot of energy to fly)...Wing clipping, IMO, shouldn’t be framed in terms of “people’s choice”, rather animal abuse stemming from a lack of knowledge and /or a lack of consideration. It needs to go the way of tail docking and ear shaping in dogs and be outlawed, and for those who still insist on this barbaric practice should at the very least refrain from hacking off their birds carefully preened feather with a pair of scissors and HAVE IT DOME BY A QUALIFIED AVIAN VET.

Most people that clip do not have a genuine reason for clipping. There are rarely cases that clipping should be utilized, yours being one of them. Clipping still has many health consequences, and for a fully able bird, it can be the cause of severe muscle atrophy, fatty liver disease, and many other health problems. Her lovebirds don’t have any severe issue that would make sense for them to be clipped. Clipping is definitely an abusive practice that needs to stop, however that are RARE cases that it can be utilized. Her video, along with many other comments saying their birds can “bump into windows” and are “easier to tame” are the ones the comments are targeted towards. Since those people have no real reason for clipping that couldn’t be solved with proper training in a flighted bird. Please don’t take them to heart since your bird is blind.

All my birds had their wings clipped and were able to go outside (with training) to keep them safe from predators. Their wings grow back, just like cutting your nails or hair. They are not regular birds, they are breed in captivity, and many birds like theses parrots are not local to the environment. It doesn’t hurt the bird at all and for me it guarantees that if my bird gets outside he can’t fly very far. He would not last more then a few days on his own as I’m sure other birds would attack him. Inside the house it stops him from reaching certain heights but he can still fly. This is not cruel it’s a preference and a precaution owners take as their bird is domesticated and a family member. We have brown eagles that live near me in Australia and I’m sure my bird would be easy food if he got out.

If you are saying it's cruel and you don't own a bird it's best not to say anything. I have 3 birds atm and I'm currently taming 2 of them. They are lovebirds and are very fast flyers. They're also not very good at flying considering they're rescues and haven't done it much. So I do clip their wings for their safety. Now I also have a pineapple conure that I do not clip because he is trained. Some people need to clip their birds wings for various reasons, training, clipping them because of flying issues, ect. ect. Libby Cain Wing clipping is scientifically proven to be mentally and physically damaging for birds. Clipping leads to learned helplessness, obesity, cardiovascular disease, mutilation, pododermatitis (bumble foot), OCD, muscle atrophy, aterosclerosis, and much more, as well as clipped birds being more susceptible to predation. Birds should NEVER be clipped for bonding or training purposes, and in pretty much all cases will make the bird much more terrified of people and cause it to loose self confidence. I have successfully tamed many fully flighted birds with no problems. I believe it is better to let the bird gain enough confidence to let them do it themselves, then clipping and essentially forcing them through the taming process.

Or a bird with wings clipped temporarily to flight train them, bird owners rarely have evil intentions when clipping wings

this doesn't cause any pain, my promblem with the comment's that they are very recent, making alot of hate, I'd wish they'd understand more often, but the abuse I've seen was people cutting a chicken's head off, trust me, I've seen it before, the worstest animal cruelty are young pig's getting their tail cutted off and literally slamming them infront of their parent's, in a actual freaking farm that's filled with pig's, that is what i call animal cruelty, but i do agree with people that say's "it affects muscle"
seriously, if you are reading this, please make the comment's not recent.

I just want to get my opinion out because this is what I believe in and this is not to send hate just to inform you of other things as well.
Clipping doesn’t only affect the muscles, it can also affect the birds mental health in bad ways such as developing a phobia of flying even if the wings are not clipped all the time. I only recommend clipping if your bird is ill ( blind, heart disease etc). Clipping can also make your bird lose their trust in you which will result in aggressive behaviors if upset. In my opinion, clipping a birds wings is the equivalent of a human with chopped off arms and legs.
Once again, this is not to send hate and just to inform you of other problems. I sincerely apologize if you got offended or upset.

Holy crap, the amount of hate. I know posting an informative comment on youtube is quite often useless, but I'm going in anyways.
Clipping is not inherently wrong. Clipping does not always prevent birds from flying. If lightly clipped, a bird can often still fly, or glide around. They just wont be able to get up the velocity to do light-speed laps around the room. This is great for keeping the bird safe, as flying into walls, windows, etc. can really hurt them. You'd think every bird would naturally be an A+ flyer, but this just isn't the case. Some of them really, really suck at flying, in this case clipping is doing the bird a help, as flying into things can break beaks, feathers, little legs, and worse.
Clipping can also be used for behavioral purposes. I can't really speak too much on this, as each situation (and bird!) is different. A clipped bird can be less aggressive. While a flying bird might be a happy bird, the happiest bird is one that gets lots of out-of-cage time, and socialization! Preventing aggressive behaviour, and reducing the risk that the bird might injure themselves while flying, can mean a lot more attention and out-of-cage time, and this is arguably the most important thing for the birds health. As long as bird has a place they can go to feel safe, and an owner who understands, and is considerate of their body language/needs, the little one will be perfectly happy, flighted or not. Sometimes all the training in the world just can't curb the aggression (commonly related to hormones, the bird having been mishandled in the past, or the bird just plain being a grump), and as a last resort, clipping can sometimes address this.
Clipping is temporary! When the bird begins a moult (it varies between species, but most commonly happens 1-2 times a year) it will regrow the snipped flight feathers. Some people choose to clip their birds during hormonal periods (puberty, mating season), and let the feathers regrow once that time has passed. It also doesn't hurt the bird, thank goodness!
This is coming from someone who will do everything possible to keep their bird fully flighted, but understands that for some birds, clipping is a harmless, non-permanent way to keep them safe and happy.

How would you like it if a bird chopped for your feet and caused you to not move around as much? You can teach free flight and/or get a bird flying cable or you can net your backyard and put screens on your windows. How exactly do you know that they are happy. God made birds a flying creature and there are so many animals that don't fly so instead of taking away a unique animal's ability to fly get a ground dwelling animal and not a bird...stop acting like you know exactly what a birds feelings are. You are such a conversationalist.

    • @schrodingercat7608

@@tierneyellis1308 Couple of crucial differences there. 1: Feet don't grow back, flight feathers do 2. Cutting off feet causes physical pain, clipping wings causes no pain.
I don't think you read my comment, I clearly stated that I keep my bird fully flighted, but wanted to address this notion that clipping is somehow the worst thing in the world for a bird.
Free flight outside can be very dangerous, if the bird flies away (and yes, even the most well-trained, strongly-bonded bird can get spooked and fly away) it's not likely to survive, due to predators, weather conditions, inadequate food supply, etc. But a screened in porch, or a flying cable are wonderful options for those who have them!
You didn't really address the safety issue, so I'll assume debating this is a moot point.
Also, conversationalist is a compliment, so uh, thank you?

    • @tierneyellis1308

@@schrodingercat7608 Conventionalism is the philosophical attitude that fundamental principles of a certain kind are grounded on (explicit or implicit) agreements in society, rather than on external reality. So it isn't necessarily a compliment depending on the context I'm using and The safety part you should always fly your bird in a safe place to fly and you should teach recall training. And my point of cutting off your feet analogy was that it disables them for a while and maybe it does hurt the because we don't know that it does or doesn't hurt them. I honestly think that it is wrong and you shouldn't leave your bird by itself at home, let it round the house near open windows or fans that are turned on, or leave it in a cage which will cause the bird to have anxiety and will want to fly away and never come back. Also you can put a piece of paper on windows and mirrors and the bird will know not to fly into it they are intelligent. Ever wonder what the bird cutouts on windows of buildings are for? It's so the birds don't smash into the windows and die...

@@tierneyellis1308 In your first reply, you had said "conversationalist", not conventionalist, but I understand what you were trying to say now.
My original comment was to dispel some of the misinformation around clipping (for example: we do know that it doesn't hurt them, as fully grown feathers have no nerves, and no blood supply. Blood feathers do, and of course these should never be clipped!).
I really don't think I'm the person you need to be having this discussion with, I know all about windows and mirrors, and my own (unclipped, flying) bird is safe regarding both of them.

You shouldnt just take away it's natural movement because you dont have an appropriate home for it.

I still dont think a traumatic moment should cause you to take away an animals natural movement though. You should learn from it and protect the bird and your home. If you're still scared about the bird hurting itself, then just dont get a bird. It's so simple. It's better the bird have a safe home with a natural movement than being force to stay on the ground. I also dont understand how it's necessary in some situations. If it's that unsafe for a bird, just give it away or dont get one. It's a lot better than having it live in panic.
I understand that it's the owners decision but pretty much every time it's for their person benefit. For example a lot of the time people just dont want to bird proof their room so they get their wings clipped. Or they find it easier to tame if the bird can fly. It's very rare that it's actually to help the bird, most of the time it's the owner being irresponsible and not thinking about things carefully.
