  • After numerous requests for new versions of "Una voce poco fa", I spent some time looking for new renditions and I'm happy to annonce that I'm adding this month seven new renditions of the famous air. The singers are: the stunning Jennifer Larmore, the virtuoso Luisa Tetrezzini, the high-flying Mado Robin, the warm Maria Barrientos, the lightning-fast Roberta Peters, the wonderful Sonia Ganassi and the sweet Victoria de Los Angeles. I do hope you enjoy this contest (the system is the same: the marks range from 1 to 5; there are two categories: singing/characterization; so your mark (+ comment :-) ) should look like this: (*/*))! Also, if you have the time, listen to all the versions, I think it's interesting to compare them all to see what makes each rendition so special. Thank you all in advance for your comments and opinions :-) !

My favorite opera singer singing this aria as no one else can. I hope one day I can sing it with even a little of her technique and ability. Enjoy the sound of her Heavenly voice. Victoria de los Angeles will forever be my favorite no matter what she is singing. A true bel canto singer with those beautiful ringing head tones and fullness and fluidity of voice.

Victoria de los Angeles is my idol as a singer. I love her timbre and her light quality. She really is "sweet," as you described her.
    Beautiful singing. 4/5

Yeah the role was originally intended for a contralto, but as fewer contraltos learned the ability or had the ability to perform coloratura effectively and healthily, the roles went to lyric mezzo-sopranos. I wish they would allow for more contraltos to sing it, as intended. Ewa Podles did a fantastic job.

Probably it has been the easiest way out - fearing that there would not be so many mezzos around able to sing that part.Although, one can't seriously believe that they were more frequent in Rossini's days:)

Very nice voice. Strong. I followd along with the sheet music and she's pretty much, with a few exceptions, going with what was written. Not a coloratura piece, but not really a mezzo one either. I guess, to me, it sounds like just a regular soprano, haha. (Not that Sopranos are regular, of course, me being one of them. :-P)3.5/3.5

Ewa Podles IS great. And, for one thing, real contraltos are rare to find anyway...

easy to listen to , but i found the ornamentation acceptable, but compared to the others in the "contest" not as creative/exciting. 4/3

Bartoli is in nowhere near the same class. Unless you value breathiness above all else.
