I'm not sure why people make comments like "it's pointless" or "mine is better" on other campervans? I have the much earlier version of this and it works for me. Yes I had one with a shower or with a pop top or with lots of cupboards or a kitchen and no I didn't like them anywhere near as much as my caddy ♡
Fantastic! It’s really nice that there is a good range and some choice for everyone so all needs / wants can be catered for. Everyone has a reason for liking what they like and that’s what makes the world such a great place!
hi Guys I'm sure they could have got a small sink and a 20 litre fridge in that van plus a second battery and electric hook up .what would have made more sense would have been.to fit a pop top from factory and make the rear area more camper focused .
We wondered about a pop top in it too, I wonder if someone will buy one without the glass roof and fit one?
But because *you* think a pop top is a good idea doesn't mean we all do. I might buy a beach if it came without.
Omg I am the golf driver you described 🤣 only issue we just rescued a retired greyhound 😅
:)
If you go to any campsite in Germany, there will always be at least one Caddy, maybe even with a pop top, with a single man in it. Reimo makes the roof. It's weird, other companies (like Reimo or even some in the UK) make much more integrated conversion kits that use the available space much more efficiently. I would expect that from VW, but instead you get this sort of "bolt-on" kit I would expect from third parties. But everyone's expectiations are different and I am sure this will be just the right thing to many...
Wow, I didn't realise that they were so popular in Europe, that's great to hear, and great that there are so many Caddy conversion options available too
Seriously tempted, for us we cant justify the cost of £60k+ for a dedicated camper to sit on the drive 90% of the year but £38k with the spec I want as a car replacement sounds very tempting to me! Perfect for the 2 of us. Used 5 year old Caddy conversions with 100k mileage going for like £15k so I dont think it is overpriced really, especially when replacing your day to day car with it!
Some great points there 👍
What you just said is literally the same situation that I’m at right now with my wife , I want something that’s just reliable as a daily and we can sleep in when going on weekend trips and 38k is definitely tempting when looking at the prices of used vans and caddy’s ! Did you get one and if so : how’s your experience?
I have yet to see a video of anyone using the Caddy California for a camping trip to try and help prospective owners figure out where stuff would go? Is there room for a yeti coolbox etc.?
Thanks for the video. I don't see the point. An outside kitchen in the UK is a bit of a joke, storage is minimal. Overall, in my view, a waste of time and money. I have a proper California and I have loads of stuff. This would just about hold a toothbrush. And at £40,000+ for the DSG version - no thanks.
It’s tricky in this country isn’t it. Weather unpredictable and with prices as they are it does look a lot of money. Haven’t seen one on the road yet, although they are brand new I suppose.
VW offers a new choice for simple van-life.
Paired with my Going Go pod, 4 birth camping, no worries about dropping the roof when it's windy and it will all fit neatly on my drive. Everyday car which I don't need to lug a full kitchen and 2 double beds around with me during the week. Just need a little imagination. I'm saying this as a previous owner of a California ocean, which I love, but too expensive and too big for the every day in my opinion. Thanks for the great review I may be trading in my golf.
You're welcome!
Get to someplace with a few friends on Friday after work and be ready Saturday morning for a full day of surfing, MTB or skiing. I can see that working for some.
Good idea!
I converted a Caddy van into a micro camper... far too small, unless you like awnings (which I discovered I don't!)
Really think VW should've fitted a pop top on this
Will be interesting to see if converters take this and then fit pop-tops as an option ?!
Thanks for the vlog. Great car 👍 expensive but cool indeed. Can you easely get out the back seats ? If so you have a lot of space for camp stuff. 👍👋
Not that I could see but I might be wrong..
Hi, just found your channel and it's great. Well done.
I have a DIY caddy maxi campervan. Mine has a pull out bed, storage, fridge and single burner! Enough for 2 adults and a big toddler.
VW could have been so much more inventive with the use of space. Feels like this was rushed out to make the most of the exploding campervan market.
You might be right. I suspect it will suit those on the continent with warmer weather a bit better too. Thanks for the feedback on the channel, lovely to have you watching us !
Great review, thanks for sharing it. As a diver who likes to go away camping a couple of times a year. This is certainly something that interests me. If I can get all my dive kit in the car (probably with the back seats folded down, it might just work.
Sounds like it could be a good match! Dealers have demos of them now so could be worth a look.
Great informative vlog, ok for a day van but for a holiday falls way short.
👍
Hmm. Have been living in mine for weeks and I'm currently in Greece enjoying a view over the bay of corinth and Mt parnassus. I love mine.
Mmmmm. Interesting bed invention
I think I’m right in saying, the golf is not the platform of the caddy. Caddy is now a beautified Ford connect. The old caddy was the MKV golf underpinnings.
Not sure you could reach the tailgate to close it if you went to bed like you demonstrated!
Very true!
love it
I’ve got the Amdro Boot Jump in my car which is quite similar
Why squeeze in table and chairs and not go for a better kitchen with a cool box and maybe small sink. They can't beat the NV200 with this version
True, would have been nice to have the option to swap those for something else, like you say.
Thanks, interesting but I’ll stick to the Cali thanks . If we ever get it of course 😂
Oh dear… Still waiting :(
Tell me about it. Ordered my LHD Coast in Nov 2020. Still waiting.....
@@CampervanTime Had a letter on Saturday🤦🏻♂️ More delays expected due to the obvious. Could be worse I guess…
@@andyblake1849 oh no... someone else posted a copy of their letter on the Facebook group. Stay strong, it WILL come eventually !
Oh no, that’s sad. Here’s hoping the world rights itself soon 👍
So when are you trading in the 6.1?
Ha! No chance, the T6.1 is staying :)
Looks like compromises all over the place. Good things.. 5 seats so can be an everyday van, and the built in seats etc but the rest feels like they’re not that fit for purpose. If you sleep in the bed you’d have to decant the entire car into something, who can cook anything substantial on one burner? And it only sleeps 2. Maybe a good picnic day car and don’t bother with the bed?
It feels like it is designed to be used with a tent or awning of some kind. I know VW are working on a tailgate tent for it…
Great video but I’m definitely not sold on the van itself. I honestly can’t see who would buy this. What’s the point in having 4 travelling seats but a van that only sleeps two. If it were me I’d have had a low level pop roof and spinning front seats. Sorry just seems pointless. Vw will discontinue this in a short time imo.
All very good points! Will be interesting to see what happens with this and if they keep the UK and Euro versions going or just sell the euro one in future?
They've been making them for years. They just don't sell them in the UK where people want ovens and sinks. They sold about 70ish here in 2014 and I have one much loved and perfect for me camper.
Another reviewer stated the bed needs 2 people to set up. Your experience too? If yes, that seems a real oversight for single travelers.
What a faff. Expected better from VW tbh
Well as you can see it is kind of possible with a bit of running around…
@@CampervanTime Well the way it drops down beyond the point of contact could lead to damage due to excessive over-extension of the bed frames flex points. Not ideal over the long term IMHO.
@@haydnball990 Good point....
NO no no. If anyone is thinking of this - get a tent! So much cheaper!!!
Ha! Yes that certainly would be cheaper!
Can’t see many buying this ! Caddy trying to be too much of everything but failing at them all. Should just be a small van.
👍 I suspect someone somewhere figured out that the inside was about bed-sized so thought they’d go for it!
Ikamper is a cheaper option
Great video you two (as allways 👍🏻)
Ok…… I’m still left thinking what’s the point of this vehicle? It’s neither one thing or another 🤷🏻♂️ as VW owners we know what the existing limitations are for camping (hot water, no fixed toilet…) this thing is even worse, imagine a few nights away with your dearly beloved … typical British summer weather (wind and rain) your both struggling to get undressed inside this coffin and then you wake up in the morning soaking wet from all the condensation dripping from the panoramic sun roof! 😆 . I think the notion is good , but the practicality is a fail .
IMO I would ditch the bed, keep the cooker and add a sink and cupboards and make it a proper ‘day van’
At the moment it’s an expensive folly 🤷🏻♂️
Completely agree that it could be problematic here in the Uk. However, it could work well in sunnier climes!
I have a DIY caddy maxi camper. VW have lost a bit of head height by adding a bed frame over the collapsed seats. It's possible to have a mattress straight onto the collapsed seats (with a slide out bed in the boot) and sit up inside no problem.
Great video, not so great vehicle.
Thank you!
