    23:10 I think the reason why Disney picked up all the Ghibli films was because of John Lasseter from Pixar. Lasseter was obsessed with Miyazaki's work and would make his Pixar animators watch Miyazaki films so that they could learn all the perfectionistic ways Ghibli films were animated. Miyazaki made sure that what happened to Nausicaa of the Valley of the wind, which was released in the States as a very butchered version called Warriors of the Wind in the 1980's, would not happen again and finally agreed to Disney distributing his films on the premise that they change NOTHING.

    Fun fact: OVA's came about due to the increasing demand of anime, as such people were willing to go to video store to directly buy it. OVA's were also a way for creators to get around the rise in restrictions for what could be on television in Japan as wells as the deadlines and costs that came with airing on TV, so a lot of experimental and more graphic anime's would end up as OVA's. FLCL, Galaxy Express 999, Evangelion, Angel's egg, Vampire hunter D, Dallos, etc.

    I've got an idea about the boys saying that from around 2017 and onward, anime is like fast fashion where a show is really popular, ends and then no one talks about it. I think it's two parts: 1. More anime is being pumped out than ever before and 2. Anime is mainstream now. Both of those work in tandem to promote hype for something when it's airing and then everyone is on the next show. Whether you view those things as good or bad, having an influx of casual viewers watching whatever new big thing is airing and then having another good show airing next season that they jump to right after to follow the hype is what makes it seem like no one in the "community" talks about something once it's over.
    There really isn't a "community" in the sense that there once was. You can be someone that likes to watch a lot of anime and find someone else that also feels the same way but end up not having much overlap in what you've seen, and it wasn't like that even 10 years ago.

    • @mario98730
      @mario98730 3 месяца назад +14

      Yeah anime has mirrored TV (and most other forms of entertainment) nowadays. When there were a limited number of channels, EVERYONE watched The Sopranos Friends etc. because you had few other options and you wanted to stay in the weekly conversation. There’s an infinite number of shows that all drop at different times now so if you and I might equally love watching TV but have seen nothing in common. Especially with how great the streaming algorhithms have become at recommending you exactly the type of show you want. Heck RUclips is the same way. The My Hero Aca/AOT “era” was really the end of the anime community being almost familial because we all experienced the same shows.

      The advantage of having 12-13 episodes (a cour) is that we don't need to wait so damn long and can be more flexible, keep in mind a 12 episode anime should ideally be 1 year in production in order to have a healthy production (about 90% aren't). Keep in mind Frieren had 2 years in its production for it to air 28 episodes, sure its fine if its starts out like that since no one had any expectation, but usually sequels needs to come out in a shorter time to keep interest relevant because in 2 years a lot has changed in the anime industry and new methods of how shows are supposed to be done are the meta. What needs to be done is to cut down on the amount of anime shows being produced and keep the most relevant ones, because having so many projects around hurts the overall quality of the shows because its hard to get top animators on a project when they need to jump around stuff with barely any time. Also this is not a "quiet year" we had tons of shows this year from small to big.

I know this because watching the Streamline dub of My Neighbour Totoro when I was very small (I'm in my thirties now, about the same age as the boys) was a formative childhood experience. That said, the *first* attempt at bringing over a Ghibli film in dub was Warriors of the Wind (Nausicaä) back in the mid '80s, which was a fairly infamous fiasco.

    25:15 I’m glad I’m not the only one who had that experience. My dad showed me Akira and then a few months after showed me ninja scroll. He didn’t even like anime he just knew I was starting to get into it and wanted to show me some stuff he watched that he thought was cool. Definitely was too young to watch them but it was a great bonding experience.

    I think this is a redemption episode for Joey. Bro probably knows a lot about old anime and culture.
    And, while he no longer watch a lot of modern anime, he watched a lot , A LOT of old stuff

    None of them being able to remember Conqueror of Shamballa is insane to me, the original FMA is a great anime, it's just overshadowed by Brotherhood but it's an amazing anime especially considering it came out in 2001 when most anime was ugly early digital trash.
