I first heard this song performed by Mr Simpson, some 30 years ago, at the Black Swan, in York: it touched my heart, then and has stayed with me ever since. He introduced it as an Anne Lister song, of whom, sad to say, I had never heard. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I have found a few versions of this song, including one by the composer herself. It is a tribute to Martin Simpson that he fills this number with such drama and pathos, quite apart from his virtuoso guitar score for it, as quite frankly, the original is dull to the point of being flat. Of course, without her it wouldn't exist and I mean no disrespect but it highlights that not all great songs make it straight from the manuscript and require another person to inject the magic. Martin does another great rendition of one of Anne Lister's songs, 'Moth'; both lyrics and score, are wonderful in Mr Simpson's version.
Mmm I don't agree, I like the real Martin, the way he is for real, not just a part of him. Singing and playing contains messages, explanations are most welcome tot me, that's why I posted it as a whole.
Man, I've loved his version of this song for almost 30 years. It's a beautiful lyric, and Martin puts it across so well.

Thanks for alerting me to this video Rob!
Martin Is simply the Best! I am luck enough to have a PRS Martin Simpson however I do not make it sound like this....
If I was at this concert, I wouldn’t have been happy with your party political broadcast opening. Keep to singing and playing please Martin.
