  • This collection of two investigative adventures aboard a space station can be played individually or as a series. 'The Hunt for Sabre IV' is written by myself, as the Travellers must uncover the conspiracy behind and locate a stolen ore carrier. The second scenario is my revised and updated version to J. Andrew Keith's 1983 classic 'Murder on Arcturus Station.'

SPOILER : Regarding the jack the NPC post-credit comment... Imagine that the players didn't believe the guy was being mind controlled and just close the case, but a couple adventures down the line they either end up with another case where the culprit claims mind control (or maybe they just see a news feed about a case... or multiple cases) and/or they get investigated themselves as possible co-conspirators for what would be essentially a cutting edge frame job .
Hell, Omega could be playing long cons with later NPC investigators, using her powers to gaslight them over time into believing they have been tracking the true conspirators with (fake) notes and clues they wrote themselves but can't remember how they learned them, leading them to blame the PCs.

Greatly under-rated, agreed. And somewhat surprisingly, the novel adaptation is a good read too - Alan Dean Foster must have done 80% of the scifi movie adaptations that have come out during his lifetime, while still writing a whole bunch of entirely original sf of his own.

Fun idea if you go with the psychically controlled character route, but to still have another killer. To add another twist, have the victim already have been dead from an earlier suspect going in and doing the terrible deed.
But when the player character goes in, they're under mind control and arent in the right state of mind to notice "oh hey, this guy is already dead. Job done I guess." After all, the only thought going through their head is "go there, stab/shoot him."
This leads to conflicting evidence about the nature of the true killer, leading to the travellers assuming there really is a frame job going on, but in actuality, there is no frame up... just two different people trying to murder at two different times.

      This could be fun!
Killer #1 poisons the victim, they die in bed.
Killer #2 sneaks into the bedroom and shoots the victim, using a pillow as a suppressor.
Killer #3 sets charges on the hull of the station, blowing out the bulkhead and ejecting the victim into space in a fireball of explosives and burning oxygen.

The fire was SUPPOSED to be that you guys were on the hook for the murder because he screwed you outta the money and everyone knew you had the motive to get him back. Getting the money owed by solving the murder case was intended to be a bonus to the whole "not going to jail for a murder you didn't commit" part. On the bright side, you guys at least found motivation somewhere. I still call that a win. Little did I realize your character would have done both jobs for a free smoothie. His cell is a thirty to forty foot long dead end hallway, and the cell "doors" are a switch by the entrance that shifts the gravity in the hallway ninety degrees. I bought it right after watching the video. Very well done. I have a potential follow-on adventure where the CEO's successor hires professional rabble rousers to incite violence as a pretense for purging the worker's union and replacing it will new crews willing to work on the companies' terms. The station manager would again retain the services of the crew to help stop the violence, circumvent the plot, and expose the corporate foul play.

    • @SSkorkowsky
      @SSkorkowsky  2 года назад

That's a good followup. If the PCs are going to be bouncing around the neighboring systems for an adventure or 2 in the period after this adventure, they might hear about mercs heading to Arcturus to become belters as well as job postings for tons of positions from deck crew, sensor operators, miners, pilots, etc. but who this big-time employer is isn't mentioned. They just know that someone is hiring a lot of people and passengers of would-be employees are coming in by the shipload. Then the Station Manager calls them up and says, "Hey gang, I might have a problem I need you to help me with." Or maybe when they show up back on Station 3 they notice some jerk merc they encountered once in a previous adventure is now a miner causing problems. This leads them to discovering a dozen more mercs from that jerk's unit are spread out in various positions across several crews, all causing trouble for the union with their rabble-rousing. Maybe crews with the ore-carriers are jumping away with their cargo and when they arrive are all fired and a totally new crew on non-union workers steps on and jumps the ship back for the next ore load with some BS story about how the old union crew all quit. I like it. Hope you have fun with it.

I truly was waiting on this one :D
We played Murder on Arcturus station lately (basically because of your review) And it was a blast.
I had to adapt it to my own RPG universe, so some factions, names and such differ - but in essence it was the same adventure.
However, the moment I finished the setup (the moment the players were informed that their former employer had been found very very dead in his room) it took quite a different direction as expected (which... in such a situation IS what one should expect I suppose)
So besides questioning witnesses and inspecting evidence, they also had, at some point hide from station security (mainly, because it turned out the commander of the military part of the station, an avid collector of ancient alien artifacts, was head over heels in some artifact smuggle scheme, together with the murder victim who happened to be the envoy of the imperial xenoarcheological society). So it also had sneaky break ins in some locations with vital evidence, hiding from guardsmen and a glorious handcuff clicking scene in the commanders office.
And all due to some random dice rolls, notes and just rolling with it. 10/10 would murder someone again*
    * an NPC. In a role playing game as a DM.

I very rarely comment on anything. That being said, Thanks must be given to those who earn it, I'm relatively new to traveller, but long time ttrpg player, Your video on the original arcturus station blew my mind and when I eventually got the pdf of your updated version I jumped at it without question. I've since ran it once and I'm planning to run it again to my new group within the Drinax campaign. I think you:
    1) Did justice to a very good adventure.
    2) Did a favour to us; your viewers with a very neat and equally good prologue with the adventure you wrote.
    3) Acomplished your goal of bringing the adventure to a new crowd and generations of players, both present and future since I plan to run this also for mi kids on game nights when they are old enough to play ttrpgs.
So for those reasons: THANK YOU SETH

I just ran a version of this adapted for Star Wars as a one-shot. The three suspects were M'Banke (whose name I changed to Pell Solosan), Urshukaan's wife Sharik, and a Wookiee character inspired by Eayukheal. One of the PCs was a Trandoshan, and in the Star Wars universe, Trandoshans and Wookiees are sworn enemies. So the Trandoshan player saw the Wookiee arguing with Urshukaan and wanted to find him later and possibly start a fight. The only problem was, the Wookiee was at a computer terminal the whole night trying to hack Urshukaan's secure files to delete some blackmail he had.
After failing to find the Wookiee in the cantina, the Trandoshan and one other player decided to go look for his quarters, which were attached to Urshukaan's suite. They had been keeping track of the clock as the night went on, and suddenly I had two PCs standing right next to Urshukaan's quarters at the time the murderer (Solosan) was supposed to emerge. In a panic, I shifted the timetable up an hour and decided that Urshukaan was already dead, and now was actually the time when Martin (reskinned as a Bothan named Kai Uf'la) was going to return to the suite and discover the body.
Instead of accidentally catching the murderer red-handed, those two PCs ended up getting caught loitering outside the scene of a murder, which provided excellent motivation for them to investigate who the real killer was. Thankfully, my altered timeline managed to fit the events the PCs had personally witnessed, although I had to scribble the correct times down in my notes so I wouldn't keep saying the original ones. It was my first time GMing, with two players who were completely new and one who was still very green. It took us six hours to finish, and we had a blast!

Honestly, I'm always leery about scenarios where the players characters are made to do things outside of the players control, even moreso outside player knowledge. While it sounds like a good story to read, you have to be very careful about who would be made to be the psion's pawn, especially since the setup seems to have no way of avoiding it, at least with how you described it. Maybe you go into more detail in the module itself, but that route feels rather heavy handed in having to learn after the fact that the woman they talked to mind manipulated and then memory wiped them. I know it would certainly take away from the mystery if they made some kind of "random" resistance roll while chatting with an NPC, but as a player I'd at least feel better about it afterwards if a roll had been made on my behalf, like while chatting if she's successful the scenario goes as planned and the character lacks al alibi because, when questioned, the player has a conspicuous gap in their memory now that they think about it. If the attempt fails, Omega aborts the attempted indoctrination, but not before the player gets an uneasy feeling, so when someone else is set up and is seen on cameras talking to that same woman in the same manner, the players has reason to suspect something.
I've been, DM to player, manipulated into doing bad deeds. It needs to be handled with care and with the right people otherwise the player can easily become rightfully resentful.

I read the murder descriptor and started silently cackling. Particularly since I remembered Seth's comments about the adventure needing a helpful bartender NPC, and I decided that rather than some random business woman the freelance agent Omega got a job as bartender in the station casino bar. Subtle access to psion pretty much everyone on the station, an ability to keep an ear of the rumor mill, and being positioned as a helpful friend to steer the investigation along when the investigators are wracking their brains at the bar. Just wanted to say that thank you Seth for all the traveller related media you've done, your introduction part and flatlined review is why I'm running Traveller next. We've already had a session 0 and oh boy my players characters are.. interesting to say to the least. Journalist turned noble, and due to good rolls early and good rolls in mustering out got to 15 SOC, and even higher but since thats the hard limit I had to make them reroll those benefit rolls but they would've had an effective rating of 19 SOC if they didn't reroll. Is just one of the many wild characters in this party. So keep being you, keep being awesome and even if I'm not that interested in Call of Cthulhu or similar I'm still here to support your amazing content.

Didn't a 15 on SOC means the Character is a Planetary leader?

    • @Noob2Ever
      @Noob2Ever 2 года назад +2

@@rommdan2716 No, it means a reputation equal to such a position, they aren't a planetary leader in actuality, just the same amount of fame.

The only "problem" I have with the new version is that Omega being the killer is so much more interesting as an option that it makes the other options kiiinda second-rate. But I think it'd work great if the other players already suspect her so it'd be easy to pull the rug under their feet.

The big wait was for the print versions to release. Experience has taught me that if I'd done the video back when the PDF first released, and said, "Print edition will come later this year," I'd have still gotten a flood of, "I can't find the print edition," and "When is the physical print book coming out?" and "I notice there isn't a print edition. This only supports my totally incorrect theory about the state of the RPG industry which I will now rant about," replies.

When I get around to running it, I may move the station closer to the spin ward marches, and have the Casino run a sort of Kino style game where they use a mass driver to launch spent meteors at the sun and people bet on what area of the sun the meteor will hit.

I've always wanted to adapt a Chult version of Traveller . Giant Jungles with advanced dinos that are much smarter then regular dinos and about half the size as I imagine dinos in the modern day would be smaller more fleet and evasive like the birds and rodents have to do in the modern day. As the ecology supports a smaller body but the appeal to have giant bugs is just too appealing and a gigantic mosquitoes the size of players might be something players would find satisfying potentially having memories of mosquito bites.

ICr50,000 each? Standard recovery fee for lost or stolen items is 10%. What's the replacement value of the missing interstellar ore carrier ship plus its full payload, I wonder? And Lamarck Mineral probably won't even have to pay it themselves, their insurance company will.

Here's another idea. Have the Murder on Arcturus Station adventure go normally, but then they bump into Urshukaan later, revealing that he faked his death to manipulate the stock price for Lamarck Minerals so he could buy shares at the lower price, then wait for the company to bounce back so he could sell the shares for a massive profit. Not only that, but he HIRED Omega to do the job and make one of the players or other suspects take the blame. As for the dead body? That was an body double.

In my game they arrived in a system run by a group of megacorps aboard the Annic Nova (jump drives don't exist yet, but now the corps are reverse engineering one and they stole the backup from the Annic Nova.) I had Ringo (who is kind of a liason between the megacorps and minor corps) hire them via a player's cousin (they were cryostored 155 years ago but woke up 45, making them 81 years old) to look into a missing ore shipment. They won't find out who hired the pirates to hit it, but will recover its cargo (20 dtons of precious metals). So Ringo will weasel out of paying them.
I really like the idea of a Psion, though, but because there aren't any in my system I think I'll make them a corperate agent that was experimented on. Like River from Firefly or Mad Pieoro (sp?) from Cowboy Bebop. The corps are trying to stop them from proving their involvement, so they frame one of my players. And if they catch her, she will wipe her own mind so they can't catch her boss.
