This is such a beautiful song. It brings up such feelings that I can't describe adequately but definitely the loss of loved ones, the gratitude for living and the hope for the future
Being exposed to opera at a young age this made me feel like I was at an opera performance how the crowd is silent and how he is truly performing beautiful music

He was John Francis Anthony Pastorius the 3rd and the best bass player in the world ever ☝️ that is not a claim but a fact! Love you & miss you Jaco ❤️
@@emetjoaquinbasiliosantorio2125 I think by underrated he means that Jaco is barely known by people nowadays. I myself only know about 5 people who share my same love for Jaco’s music
Jackson Page there’s an rnb group that had some hits in the 90’s, called swv, and they have a song called “rain”. well their song samples portrait of tracy, and redbone samples rain - so they all make a chain in a way. jaco -> swv -> gambino. all make great music too. music is fun as fuck.
I dunno if I ever saw him play it live. It's like three false harmonics, so it's really easy for it not to produce as clearly as it does on the album. Even Victor Wooten said he didn't know how Jaco got it so clear on the album.
Holy shit, a version where the crowd is respectful and quiet. Some videos are too hard to watch when it’s just people making noise over the art. I get jazz and clapping after solos but during the performance is so distracting.
Jaco was diagnosed Bi-polar. He became problematic during the last years of his life. Could be why he was fidgety. These days his idiosyncrasies would be viewed as grating.

36 years after his end of life, Jaco is still the boss of bass players.
It will certainly remain so for eternity.
RIP Jaco 🙏🏼
It's simply amazing that Jaco was able to put this much harmonic complexity on a 4 string bass. For bassist this is highly inspiring.
If any word would apply to Jaco it would be "inspiring."
An inspiration for every musician. Pastorius' compositions are classics.
Jaco was the mad scientist of bass players. He explored uncharted territory on that instrument.
He had such a unique sound. It's impossible to mistake him for any other bass player.
Except for Pedro Aznar
@@xdtshoaquewea Hmm...he's a Jaco copy-cat. I wish people would just quit trying to sound like Jaco.

Yes it's all there. Loss, love of life and hope.
I can only imagine how beautiful Tracy was !
Tracy kicked him out of the house in the end for his mental illness, the jerk! He then was killed by a bouncer.

This version is probably the best one out there. HOLY GUACAMOLE!!!! He friggin' takes it to a whole new level here. Jaco is the GOAT.
I agree! I never heard him play this much of his original!
incredibly calm and amazing feeling...he threw the audience in the silent space !
Fantastic to see him play this much of his original version! Thanks
I LOVE YOU JACO
Jaco's very beautiful and mysterious play. He is legend. Thank you.
He is one with the universe. I've never admired a musician that much.
What a beautiful live version, thanks!
perfection at its best

It is clear Tracy is a complicated woman..
probably would've been a better man without the stress in his life
I never forget when I first heard Jaco. Beyond the galaxies.
Incredible composition: Haunting, gorgeous and evocative. Just fabulous...

Hello from Germany !
Actually Jaco composed this in dedication of Tracy, his first wife
Not at all. What makes you say that? This is a beautiful declaration of love.
Happy Birthday Jaco
Cheer genius.
The love that men have for women, barely makes waves.
But that shit is REAL.
Tracy was his first wife.
Man, he did love her much.🌹
Love Jaco

I don't know but everytime I watch this and see the mistake at 1:35 it makes me sad. Like he really stopped playing to regret that note :(

Nice to see Jaco repping Philly!

Sublime....unfortunately Florida was not the place to be in the early to mid eighties if you had the issue's Jaco had.
