Just found this 2 years later and I'm glad I had an hour to watch Taryl bring this boat anchor back to life! Keep this kind of content coming. We need more people willing to spend time on these engines instead of scrapping them at the first sign of a problem.
This channel really does deserve an Emmy award. This is the best diy, "program", on the, "airwaves". All due respect to Musti1 who does his videos sans a cameraman and certainly is a contender. In my opinion the videography gives Taryl and the grassrats crew the edge . Acting, characters and skits aside.
My uncle had an old hay baler years ago that had an old Wisconsin 2 cylinder motor on it , this video brought back fond memories , great job Taryl , your videos are # 1 in my humble opinion , Thank you to you & all the gang & May God Bless
Just started watching your videos the other day. Seems like I have learnt a crap load of stuff in just a couple days. You are a MASTER Mechanic! I bow to you.
Back in the seventies, when I was a young apprentice carpenter those Wisconsin engines were on all kinds of equipment, mixers, generators etc. They ran real good and pretty dependable.
I used to have one left in a garage I bought. It didn't have generator starter, it had rope start with huge magneto off the side, like a Joe Hunt magneto.
Hey Taryl, Just wanted to thank you for a suggestion you gave regarding cleaning up valve seats using emery cloth and the valve to mimic the angle of the seat, to clean them up. It worked like a charm. Working on a Wisconsin ABS engine, virtually zero compression. Thanks to your recommendation, it has compression now!!!! Thanks you Sir!! Your videos are awesome by the way!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Every think about getting a rear engine snapper and weld/mount an engine mounting plate to the front? You'd have a drivable test frame. You could make the engine mount a bit higher so you're not constantly stooped over working on an engine. Then when you're done you could drive the test frame out of the shop and park it next to MoTow.
"Start it on the table Taryl...we want to see bad things happen!" Had me in stitches. You crack me up man. Sound like me working by myself in the shop through out the day!
This brings back 1976 shop apprentice memories. Getting yelled at for using the boss’s extra thin Snap-on tapped wrenches to loosen a rusted deck bolt. “Not my Wisconsin tappet wrenches you numb skull!” Today I could sue, and own the shop for being traumatized. Well at least I remember what a tappet wrench is.
These skits are getting better, video to video ! And I like the idea of the grass rats doing revivals! They definitely aren't trained actors and that's what makes it even better, imo.
I can't sufficiently express my gratitude for all your efforts to share your knowledge and experience with us, and do so in such an entertaining way. I have taken to watching everything and anything you create, even if I have no direct interest in the subject simply because I so enjoy your antics. I recently took to restoring lawn tractors as a hobby, just one at a time and selling them cheap, then starting over. Your programs have proven invaluable to these efforts. Please take yourself to a local purveyor of libations and treat yourself to a "cold beverage" on me. I actually won't be paying for it, but know that my heart is in the right place (even if my wallet isn't).
Cool project, only Wisconsin I’ve ever touched was about 50 years ago when I was very young. As I recall the motor weighed as much as I did back then. I also remember the shock I got from the Wico mag it had!
Ohhhhh so this is how you fix an old boat anchor? Taryl, this video is one of your great ones, great skit & a step by step bringing that old Wisconsin to life MANY THANKS for ANOTHER G R E A T VIDEO. 👍👍👍👍👍
The TRA-12D for sure came out of a Bolens. I have a 1971 Bolens Husky 1256 with the TRA-12D. I recently blew a head gasket on it. Was still running on 28 psi compression! Plowed, disked, and tilled my garden with it like that. Bulletproof engine!
I like to use a spray bottle with 2 stroke gas to mist the intake with fuel. Its much cheaper then carb spray and it's better for the engine plus it provides some lubricant for the top end. I know Taryl has been doing it this way for 40 years with zero issues. 😄love the videos!
Carb cleaner spray and even starting fluid (ether) are basically volatile solvents so using them on an engine that has been sitting for decades is not recommended because they dissolve whatever oil remnants might remain in the top end, but in the grand scheme, you're being super over-cautious. Rest assured, a friendly-to-the-channel channel, Mustie1, does indeed practice what you suggest. He uses two-cycle fuel as his go-to starting fluid.
50 years ago I owned a 180amp lincoln dc arc welder with a vertical twin 10.5hp wisconsin. it was crank start. when I had a intake valve stick(always the same one). I would remove the spark plug and shoot oil on the stem. then exercise it(pushing it shut with a bent screwdriver) after just a bit it always started. these old wisconsin engines are great.
Wisconsin robin engines are great engine's if there taken care of. my dad fixed em all the time when i was a kid. Havent seen one in 20-30 yrs. RIP dad...
Elkskins got some of that Devil’s Lettuce 🥬 growing in his truck bed. He’s a big time producer. I like the work apron Mr. Taryl was sporting. Being a mechanic I wear an apron almost every day.
I watched this like Taryl was giving away money. I do not have a Wisconsin S12D but the repairing/rebuilding steps are similar for every mower. We all just love Taryl and Co
When I was a kid we had one of those that ran a compressor with a clutch. Mounted on an old lube truck. I was checking out the engine, setting points, ect. I removed the distributor cap and pushed electric start button to check the points and it fired right up with no cap! I swear it ran better with it off! Of course spark was jumping all over the place but we sure got a good laugh over that one!
This video is awesome, I picked up a bolens 1250 the other day for a song cause the engine had no compression . I followed this video and had her running the next couple days yeeeeeeehaaaaa ! Thank you TARYL !!
An Apron Taryl, u cookin' up gasolene and liverwurst san'wiches? I bet this engine will have great compression now, Taryl. looks like you are blowing out Fluffy's mouse house. 2 thumbs up!
Once again the multi talented Dactyl family has put on another informative educational and highly entertaining production. They have given me countless hours of great fun while learning. They are all great Americans!!! Hope my comment does not get deleted or ghosted for using great and America in the same sentence. Maybe since i left out again the censors will not bounce me as usual. Thank you Dactyl family!!! Y'all are the very best!!
Hello Taryl, what an old good days.. some Yazoo YR60 mowers have similar style and color of engines... what a great combination.... there are few survivors still running today Thank you ... keep on wrenching... thumbs up to ya
The wife walks in and said ''That guy can fix anything''. I told her that Taryl teaches and sometimes restores old stuff. She listens when in the area. I'm still disappointed at the low sub number. She is too. Have a friend subscribe.
If he would drop the character and the act, people might sub. I always feel like this is going to be the making of a C movie... But he does know the motors. I’m not sure how I feel about beating on valves with a mallet...or hammer though.
@m9 ovich I would find an old service manual on line and find the part number that I needed. Then I would search that part number on ebay. Bolens parts and supplies is also a website that specializes in NOS and new Wisconsin parts. Hope this helps.

i was a engine mechanic in a wrecking yard for 32 years. By not undoing the hot wire it can ruin the points like you said. If you leave it hooked up to long, the coil can also burst open sending hot oil around the room.
I'd be interested to see Wisconsin with the electronic igniter ignition. My Tra10d doesn't have points and condenser but a Wico magneto coil under the flywheel and some sort of electronic gizmo hooked to the single wire coming out behind the flywheel.

Taryl is mechanic, Mustie1 is a bull in a china shop that somehow manages to salvage an old VW every once in a while.
Loved how the 1974 Power King tractor got up and running due to this gentleman. He's more than good! He knows his stuff.
These Old Engines Are Lot's Of Fun To Work On. Thank's For Keeping Them Alive Taryl

thanks for throwing in a couple free stickers in my order about a month ago, it was a nice surprise .
Just started watching your videos the other day. Seems like I have learnt a crap load of stuff in just a couple days. You are a MASTER Mechanic! I bow to you.
Nice, those old Wisconsin’s are tough as nails. Great old engines….
Hey love your channel!
Subscribed because of the Gravely content, I don't know much about them but I believe they were better than B&S ...

They were great engines and I worked on a lot of them
yep, great engines, just dont shut them off on a hot day, they were known for vapor lock. other than that, they would run forever!@@philliphall5198

It's amazing just how popular that combination of tattoos is. Every third or fourth guy on your show seems to have them.
He may be a character but is a good mechanic. That know a lot of. Tricks. And short cuts
The "King of small Engines"... Better yet, Taryl gets me laughing, which at this point in time is worth more than money !! Thanx Taryl !!!!
