In today’s episode, Becket talks with pastor and author, Tim Challies, about his book, “Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God.”
On November 3, 2020, Tim and Aileen Challies received the shocking news that their son Nick had died. A twenty-year-old student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he had been participating in a school activity with his fiancée, sister, and friends, when he fell unconscious and collapsed to the ground.
Neither students nor a passing doctor nor paramedics were able to revive him. His parents received the news at their home in Toronto and immediately departed for Louisville to be together as a family. While on the plane, Tim, an author and blogger, began to process his loss through writing. In Seasons of Sorrow, Tim shares real-time reflections from the first year of grief-through the seasons from fall to summer-introducing readers to what he describes as the “ministry of sorrow.”

Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 15 years old, she passed 3 years later. The process of grieving was very hard, people in church will tell them to look to the future and be happy because she was in Heaven… I couldn’t find anyone that will sit with me and just let me cry for my loss… I walked away from the church… for a whole year. Some believers will also said very hurtful things like my mom might had hidden sin and that was the main reason she didn’t receive Gods healing. I felt that God s favor left us… and my grief got worse . One day after work a friend invited me to a home group and I during worship the leader just put his hand on my shoulder and said “ It s Ok… God wants your pain and disappointment… let God the Father comfort you” I cried like a baby and felt God s loving embraced taking away my sorrow” and then the process of healing started for me .As a believer I learn that I also was called to cry with those who cry” I saw many healings in my church… I do believe in physical healing. We “ need eternal perspective” as the author of the book said. At the same time we need to believed in God s power to heal now on earth.
My sister lost her 22 year old son. She had 2 sons and we had 3 sons. They were all close in age. Our hearts were all broken but I couldn’t truly know her grief. One day she told me that the night before she stood outside in the freezing cold with no coat, for so long that she was shaking and her teeth were chattering. I asked her why she did that and she said she wanted to feel something besides her grief. Then I had a small picture of what she was going through.
Wow!!! That is pain! Praying for her!
She instinctively knew what to do. Cold water swimming is good for depression for that very reason ... it acts as a sort of shock treatment. It's a terrible loss to lose a child.
I get that. I used to not understand people who self harm. But in the past year there have been times times the emotional pain has been so great, I considered physically hurting myself, hoping it would overwhelm the emotional.
Thank you for sharing you sister's story. I was prepared for my husband's death after 4+ years of marriage from ALS. He was very healthy and was a runner. He passed after only a few months. I still grieve, sometimes out of the blue.
I know God is my strength. Some days it feels so far away, though.
When I lost my husband suddenly and unexpectedly to a heart condition, all I could say is God is sovereign, God is sovereign, God is sovereign! I actually had never said that before and I have been a Christian for over 40 years and that is what the Holy Spirit put in my heart. Praise the Lord! It was the hardest time of my life, and yet it is true, God is sovereign!
The Father came by your side at that moment n gave you the strength to pronounce that praise during your time of need. Praised be YeHoVaH! One day we will be reunited with those who have trusted in Him to their last breath. Oh What a Day that will Be!! 🙏🤗
So true! It’s been a year since I lost my husband and I continually tell myself that! And remind myself of the joy that I will spend eternity with him walking the streets of heaven.

My youngest son passed away at 22 & I agree that it became the worst time but the best time in my life because I came to know my God more intimately than I could have not known any other way. I still agree that head knowledge of Him became heart knowledge.
Lost my mother to suicide. Grief is tough. Gratefully, Christ is the great healer.
So sorry. My mom has attempted suicide 4 times that I know of. She is diagnosed bipolar and psychotic.

Suicides hit different. My Dad took his life recently. Know there are others who truly understand the chasm of grief it brings. God knows it even better than us and He is with us always 🙏

My son passed away at 14 in 1999 from bone cancer. For 2 1/2 years he went threw treatment. I don't have an answer as to why he was taken so young, but my hope
Is in the Lord. I know I will be reunited with my son when I leave this world. God has his reasons. I don't know what I would do without the Lord. He gives me strength.

We have some brothers in the faith who are grieving over their teen son's unexpected suicide. Their sorrow is deep. Last week the Dad had to throw dirt over his son's coffin. In spite of their grief the family is grounded in a living hope and have expressed thankfulness to our heavenly Father for the 15 years they had with him.

I’m glad your friends are beginning this journey with the Lord. It’s the best place to begin. But please don’t abandon them along the way, thinking they are healed. It can take a long time, longer than is comfortable for the grieving and those who walk with them. Don’t try to rush them through the process. Even if you experience a great loss yourself, remember each grief is unique. You can never totally understand another’s. But it really helps if they are not abandoned. Listening is good. You don’t always have to say anything, or try to force them to talk. You can’t fix this, but you can love you friends and pray for them.
Bless all of you for listening to this podcast! Bless you, Beckett, for interviewing Tim. From my own experience, I appreciate and affirm everything Tim is saying. He has a much needed message, especially for believers experiencing deep grief.

This reminds me of the young boy who had to put down his favorite calf: as he did so he was asking God why because the calf was special to him. He said that God answered, " My son was special too, and I lost Him." So God understands our grief.

Sweet and tender conversation. I remember hearing about Tim's loss a while back. Sad stuff. I grew up with no dad, basically, and no positive male influences. I've never been married or have had children. I'm 46 now. Can't imagine losing a child.

I lost my husband four years ago to Stage IV metastatic Melanoma and brain cancer; and I’ve lost eight family and friends since 2018. The interview with Tim Challies was hard to watch. My heart both breaks and fears the deep pain people have endured from so unimaginable loss. When TC poised the question whether he had idolized his son, it convicted me. God bless Tim and his family throughout this huge loss.
Over two years ago, my husband died suddenly in his sleep. I know something of the shock and horror Tim has gone through. However, I know nothing of familial support -- both of my children have shown animosity towards me, even though my husband and I were married for almost 50 years and were a Christian couple and family from the beginning. I often meditate on Job. This is so brave and encouraging to me.
May the Lord comfort you in both of these great grief's.
Thans for this, I needed it today. At 64 I have lost all my family and husband, and many friends. I have no children. It's hard and I'm trying to make a new life for myself, but still the loneliness and longing for those who have left ahead of me is so hard. A very heartfelt and honest interview. To me, and this is my personal opinion, we actually mourn for ourselves when we lose a loved one, especially if they were a Christian. God's ways are not our ways, and everything in our lives was known to our Father since before the creation of the world. “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain,” I try to live with this knowledge each day. Steward your great losses! I have suffered many great personal losses during my life, much I can't even talk about. The idea that we can steward these is very profound. Sorrow gives us depth and compassion that we would not have otherwise! Most of my suffering has been the direct result of my past sins. This makes me appreciate God's forgiveness - since "he who is forgiven much loves much".
It feels like most of my suffering is self inflicted. Not trying of course. It’s hard to understand Gods sovereignty in our mistakes. But He is.

@@anjieobasa1871 Great question. Submit your feelings as well as your heart to the Lord. Ask him for what you need and speak his Word by faith. Ask Him to reveal himself. Worship through song is a great way to invite more of his presence in. He will answer. Feeling lonely is temporary and doesn't equate to being alone. God promises to never leave us. 💯

I can’t tell you how grateful I am for this interview. I work at a Christian bookstore and saw this book on the shelf. I just lost my mom a couple months ago. I am finding grief to be a strange thing. Feeling both faith in my Creator and deep pain at the same time. I am learning for the first time in my life about lament. I ran across another book, called Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy that speaks of lament as well

I am sorry about your grief right in the loss of your Dear Mom🌹Have you yet come across a book titled, Hope When Your Heart Is Breaking? It is authored by Ron Hutchcraft. I just read. It is an honest look at how our greatest loss can lead to our greatest gain. He wrote from the deep well of his own loss and grief, and points to practical steps that lead to peace n wholeness🕊️

This is so awesome! You guys are two of my favorite people to follow for biblical wisdom and information. I just gave Seasons of Sorrow today to a family I work for who lost their son. Praying it helps them as much as it did for me when I very tragically lost a close friend. After that I took a walk with my niece who said she listened to some Beckett guy and I said, Beckett Cook and she was like YES! Happened with many of my friends before too. Feeling justified hearing a lot of the language I've been using as I go through a season of sorrow.
I've frequently chalked things up to "grief brain" because I can see certain behaviours and words are different to what I would have done before.
Loved hearing being put into words certain ideas I've had but not been able to express in words. This video was so well timed and so valuable.
I look forward to being further down the grief road in time and maybe being in a place to share as Tim has.
The last few days I unexpectedly had to revisit the past 26 years of traumatic loss & betrayal . Thank u for this post

Lost My sweet nephew 20 years ago he was 19 then 6 years ago we lost my wonderful Nephew to murder by his girlfriend he was just 33. I have now just lost my Dear friend to ALS ,she was only 53. she was my sister in Christ. We were so very close. I can tell you I am so Glad I will see them once again. But I miss them so still and now. I don't talk about it because it is such a heavy burden to put on others. I am so glad to have a father in heaven I can talk to. Thank you for sharing.
I am very sorry for this man’s loss. I would imagine losing a child, especially suddenly, is one of the worst pains and trauma a human being can experience. My condolences to him and his entire family.
Such and important topic to cover. I witnessed my mother grieve my older sister when I was 14. There is no grief like it. If one lives long enough there will be losses and it’s important to know how to navigate through them. ✝️

This is a very important topic. In this life we will all suffer loss. I want to remain faithful in the deepest of darkness. The man speaks from a place of deep grief. I noticed he uses words such as God's divinity, and bigger n smaller catechism... Is his religious persuasion E Orthodox?

Praying for you and your family. One of the side effects of these experimental mRNA gene therapy injections is myocarditis according to studies by Dr. John Campbell. Not sure if this is applicable but in order to save others we must grapple with this. So tragic.

My greatest sorrow has been the loss of my third baby at 12 weeks. God is who has seen me through, giving me so much comfort and love. It has been 4 months and is still painful but I always lean on Him and thank Him.
Love the thoughts about the dash of life. I’ve lost children and my husband. Our dash as believers goes on into the future in glory! A new extension of my dash our dashes. May it be forever for Gods glory.
Becket, thank you for this interview. I am grateful for this as I listened to it this morning on a Sunday. My Mother passed on to be with the Lord in October of 2021. She was my best friend. My brother and I took care of her at home for 7 years. Going to Mass weekly, praying often, and staying busy has helped me. Thank you.

Young catholic here. Dealing with a loss. I’m not at that place of comfort yet. What I can say/feel is that this moment in life is a test to my young faith.

My brother in ❤ and his father died in a tragic car accident on 4th November, last year. I have never been through something so painful, but I take comfort in GOD's promises in the bible. My brother in ❤ left behind a wife and four kids, his mom, sister and so many other relatives and friends. We miss him daily, but we await Revelation 21:4. GOD is with us in our pain. An outlet is critical though, otherwise you can go mad. Accepting the situation is critical. Working through the grief is necessary. I have cried a LOT, but i'm a musician and that helps me. I'm grateful for my grief, because it has made me more compassionate and empathetic.

I remember when I was in high school back in 2005 I had an assistant principal. He was a nice guy easy to talk to. He was a believer, but he mentioned one time that he backed away from his faith after his parents died well I guess I have to cut him some slack because I don’t know what that’s like but since high school I have lost precious Loved ones some of them where vary young too I pray where ever he is the Lord draw him and put the right people in his path that understand how he feels and have found in time hope and healing in Christ ❤
Chad Bird too lost his son, in a tragic accident last year. He has a remarkable beautiful testimony based on his past experiences as a failure. It’ll be great to hear from him.. perhaps in another time…

Having faith in God throughout all the hardships I’ve endured has kept me going. I know that I’ll see my parents in heaven. I’m the same age as my late mum was when she died 32yrs ago on the 29th of January, 53. It was unexpected & it was a massive heart attack right in front of me so I was the last to speak to her. The doctor had been out & she was 🛌. My dad collected me at a church house group. It was awful especially with my late disabled eldest brother in the next bedroom. I was truly blessed with my parents.

Thank you for interviewing Pastor Challies. He is correct that you never go back to the person you were after you lose a child. It is difficult for parents who have all of their children to understand this grief. You don't "get over it", you don't "get through it". Your grief never ends, but you learn to walk alongside of it. For anyone who has a friend or family member who has lost a child, here is my suggestion for what might help you: please do not relate to the parent your story of grief unless you have lost a child. The best thing to tell them is "I have no idea how you feel. But I am here." and leave it at that. I have talked to many bereaved mothers -- some lost their faith as a result of losing their child. I did not want to lose my faith in addition to losing my son, so I worked hard on my faith, and I started a small fb group of Moms in my situation. We lean on each other in addition to giving our pain over to Christ, every day. To bereaved parents I can only suggest that you surround yourselves with other Christians and stay in The Word.

Wow, I never heard someone who was actually affected by loss/sorrow as Tim has, speak so passionately about the ministry; or the stewardship of the gift of sorrow. come to think about it. Becket, you are a blessing! Thank you for sharing this important work! I've shared this interview with relatives on my mother's side of the family: we lost all three siblings--my Mom & her two older brothers--all in their 80s--in 18 months recently. In a flash, her entire generation was gone. Then on my Dad's side, my oldest cousin lost his oldest granddaughter to a raging 8-week glioblastoma. She was only 9 years old.Thank God He is Sovereign. Without Him we have no hope. Many blessings.
