Add a teaspoon of Epsom salt to your soaking water. The added magnesium helps with transplant shock. If your roots have already broken dormancy(spouted), add some fish emulsion fertilizer to your soak as well. After planting, just water with the soaking water.

This was the first time I wanted to try asparagus plants. I ordered 2 and when I got them I realized that there were 4 in each package. I am so happy with them. I planted them a few days after I got them because of all the rain. It has been 2-3 wks and mine are doing great. They are 4-8 ins tall and one of them is over a foot tall. The ones I grew from seed are a foot tall, but a black worm got to them and ate all the ferns. Hoping they recover. Thanks for all you sell and for all your helpful tips. I wouldn't clip the top. I just got hostas. They have one top and multiple roots. I din't think he meant clipping the top. I'm pettry sure it would ruin the hosta. Thanks for the summary though.

I ordered your bare root June bearing strawberries, soaked them and planted them and some are blooming! I was surprised since they shouldn't fruit till next year but they arrived healthy and strong. All were viable and woke up beautifully after being planted in the ground. I've never planted strawberries before, so I did a little RUclips research and learned what a hillock was and away we went. I now have a strawberry hill that will hopefully produce some good pickings! I also did the unthinkable and direct sewed (zone 8b) some of your tomato seeds and they are coming up nicely! I bought several bare root trees from the arbor day foundation. Had nothing but problems with 2 big orders in 2 springs. The only tree that ever came out of dormancy and is thriving is a pear tree. Zero problems with trees from other companies.
If they are no longer dormant pot them up and prepare to harden them off before planting. I bought 3 bare root plants from Walmart that were already leafing out, I planted them and shocked them due to a frost. They were a lilac, forsythia and a hydrangea there is barely any life in them now not sure if they will make it! I knew better but I got in a hurry 😬

I ordered strawberry bare roots last year, definitely didn't soak the roots at all and they grew just fine so you don't necessarily need to soak bare root plants. I don't know how other bare root plants are but I know for sure strawberries bare roots don't need to be soaked
Too funny! I thought about presoaking my bare root strawberries and thought I'd just water them abundantly. I must have green arms, because everything I've touched so far is sprouting like mad! The strawberries started growing in less than a week (potted, indoors). All the other seeds I recieved from MIgardener have taken off as well. Admittedly, I should have more heat on them, but hey, they're all growing!
Well after watering a stick for around a week i now have what looks like a plant lol, under a light in a pot for now. Thanks for the tips they really helped ✌

They did survive summer just fine tho and are still going strong through the winter so It was worth it. Hopefully this summer I'll be able to harvest a bit. After the first bit started growing it took off like a weed, the BlackBerry is around 3 feet tall now. My strawberries got taken over by my pumpkins then died but they didnt really have any issues getting started either.

Ate 2 raw asparagus spears today - planted from MIgardener seeds 3 years ago! So fresh and tasty. I ordered 12 purple bare root asparagus last spring, lost 5 last year and only 2 have come up this year. Not from you, don't think you can ship those to Canada so I may have to find a local supplier. Nothing but sunshine here but last frost date is about a week away.

I know for strawberries he’d said in another video to plant them with the crown just above the soil level or right at soil level or they would rot. I hope I got that right because that’s what I did.

Last year or 2 years ago planted strawberries and last year had a couple maybe but this year......I think I had at least 4 lb by now. I also planted what I got from Luke so, next year. I think i only planted everbearing...so loving it...the taste...yumm. They are smaller but so much better than the chemical filled ones. Very excited! It will work, just take care of the properly. Hey! Don't wait. :) I'm following a few different gardeners and it seems that everything I touch wants to grow. I took a square, 1gal, water bottle and cut the side out. Using 1 part each of , black manure, sphagnum moss and potting soil, I have everything growing next to the back window. Oh, and I'm using a one part mix of green sand, blood meal and bone meal. ;)

I brought a bare root cherry tree almost 3 weeks ago and thought it was completely dead. I'm new to gardening. But I planted it anyway hoping I was wrong. Didn't soak the roots because I didn't know that's what I needed to do. Straight in the dirt and plenty of water. Turns out, I was wrong because 2 days ago I noticed it was sprouting out new growth. Sounds like you need to get your strawberries bare roots from a different supplier. The asparagus I got all 16 are already over 2 ft tall. Can’t wait till next year to harvest. I really like that your branching out from just seeds. Would be nice if you weren’t out of most your stuff most the time.

@Poison Ivyif this is the first year for the roots, then allow the spindly ones to grow. In fact, don't cut from your asparagus the first year. They need to grow and mature.
Yes,it takes a while before you can harvest asparagus. Mine are 24 years old and still producing. I freeze dry,bottle and freeze. If properly cared for last forever.
Oh my.. i planted my asparagus roots about an hr ago. I didn't soak them, they looked really dry, and I planted the crown about 6" deep. Should I dig them back out and redo?? I heard asparagus dont like to be moved once it's in the ground? Thank you for the video!

I got bare root trees while the ground was still frozen so there was no way I could get them in the ground. I wish you had given some ideas for that problem.

I just received bare root strawberries. They seem much fresher than I was expecting. I don't know of that's a good or bad thing. Some of the green tips broke off during planting. Will they be ok?

For someone who's renting in Metro Detriot and not allowed to plant my fruit trees in the ground what would suggest for over wintering potted fruit trees and strawberries?
I got 3 types of strawberry and some asparagus as bare roots from the Migardener shop. The strawberries survived at about 90% and all the asparagus survived. I haven't given up hope on the few strawberries that didn't sprout.. yet. So far I am very pleased. My strawberries started flowering with only a few leaves on each plant. Is that normal or a sign of stress?
How can you tell if strawberries are dead? Theres not much to snip.... and some of mine are wet and red on the inside, some are dry and yellow.. I'm assuming the dry yellow are dead?

I bought dormant strawberry plants from you...and received them a couple weeks ago. They were brown and sticky. They were not dormant, they were rotted and moldy. I haven't been able to reach you by phone or by leaving a text
That's interesting, Sharon; I had a bad experience with my bare root Quinault strawberries as well. I don't remember a moldy smell... I thought it was more of an earthy smell... they definitely had soil still clinging to the roots though. They weren't clean. I soaked them, planted them, fertilized them, and a couple of plants struggled to put out leaves and then died. Not a single plant made it. I took photos and sent them to MIGardener Customer Service with a description of what I did. Never heard back. That was over two weeks ago. I think they are overwhelmed at the moment with everyone ordering seeds, but I'm hoping I'll get a response at some point. It sounds like they may be using other growers to ship bare root plants, so maybe there's a problem with one of them not shipping good plants. In any case, I've missed the strawberry window for this year. Hope you get some resolution with your order.

I can't tell you how many bare root fruit tree I received that has NO, NONE, ZERO NADA feeder roots. They come with 1 or 2 'main' roots that are chopped off after 4 inches or so. I don't think a single one that arrive that way take. I naturally NEVER use the nursery again. They ones that come with larger root masses usually do better. I don't understand why don't nurseries take better care. Sorry for the rant this well done video triggered me.
Here's a question: Have you ever had to garden in excessive rain? Over here in West Central IL, we have had almost four inches in a week. My garden looks like dirt soup, and we have rain projected into June. Any tips to try to keep things alive?
I've done the same with my strawberry plant except I planted them directly in a red solo cup plus every time I transplant I've never fanned out the roots and they all are doing fantastic
Well Luke, I already wrote to your customer service department over two weeks ago (haven't heard back yet, but I know you guys have been super busy), but my Quinault strawberries did not make it despite my doing pretty much everything you suggested here (and I received them awhile ago before this video aired). The only thing I did differently was let the plants soak overnight, but I planted them straight away the following day and I did use Trifecta in the planting holes as well. A couple of the plants struggled to put out a few small leaves, but they dried up by the next day. I kept them all well watered and mulched. I persisted with them for over two weeks, and nothing. Seems odd that not a single plant made it, so I don't know what happened. Very disappointing.
@@tamz0309Funny you should ask. I did, and received a full refund. I tried again with the bare roots this year, thinking maybe last year's batch was substandard, but unfortunately I'm seeing it happen all over again so I have to assume the plants are simply not healthy by the time they arrive. Only one looked like it had any life in it but it quickly died despite my best efforts. So it looks like I will be asking for another refund and no more bare root strawberries for me!
BUMMER =C I wish that I had known about soaking roots a week ago, as I've just planted some Bare Root Asparagus crowns, and I didn't soak them beforehand. However, I did make sure that I gave the soil a really good soaking, and that their roots had a good amount of fertiliser around them... so fingers crossed >_

I planted my asparagus way too deep (crowns about 6 inches deep). This was about 3 weeks ago. Can/should I dig them up and bring them closer to the surface? Is it too late for them?
I did the same thing. Everything I read and watched said amend 12 inches deep and plant crowns 6 inches deep. It would have been a lot less work if the asparagus came with instructions saying to disregard all other instructions and only plant an inch deep 🙄 ugh....
@Poison Ivy I purchased bare root strawberries from a different company and all of them are setting fruit. In the past I did bare root Roses from the same company and lost several. Don't be totally turned off of bare root by this experience. Timing and health of the plant are very important too, not just planting styles.
Dig hole 12 in. deep,amend soil 6 in. deep,plant asparagus crowns in trench covering crown by about 1 in. soil, as asparagus sprouts slowly fill trench. Filling the trench may take several years until completely filled in

That's what I thought, I just got mine today and tomorrow I was going to plant them in small pots indoors until May 15th.

TLDR; 1) clip top. Look for green.
2). Soak roots in lukewarm water for 2 hrs.
3) don’t let roots dry.
4) plant.

My Quinault & Seascape soaked for 14 hrs & then grew 2-4” when in soil for just a few hours! 😂

Hey! Don't wait. :) I'm following a few different gardeners and it seems that everything I touch wants to grow. I took a square, 1gal, water bottle and cut the side out. Using 1 part each of , black manure, sphagnum moss and potting soil, I have everything growing next to the back window. Oh, and I'm using a one part mix of green sand, blood meal and bone meal. ;)
Now Not awesome! I have about 200 seedlings under grow lights, but I live in Michigan, so our weather is just now breaking...so hopefully this weekend we get our garden in😆

I brought a bare root cherry tree almost 3 weeks ago and thought it was completely dead. I'm new to gardening. But I planted it anyway hoping I was wrong. Didn't soak the roots because I didn't know that's what I needed to do. Straight in the dirt and plenty of water. Turns out, I was wrong because 2 days ago I noticed it was sprouting out new growth. Now I'm wondering if had I did this would my tree have woken up sooner.

I purchased a large amount of bare root green giants in the spring. We got crazy back logged and we’re not able to pot them up. They stayed in the fridge until now…anyway they will live it I pot them up now?

Sounds like you need to get your strawberries bare roots from a different supplier. The asparagus I got all 16 are already over 2 ft tall. Can’t wait till next year to harvest. I really like that your branching out from just seeds. Would be nice if you weren’t out of most your stuff most the time.

I've been planting all of my asparagus roots nearly a foot under the soil. Is it better to plant them closer to the surface? I just bought 20 more roots that I need to plant tomorrow.

@@andread8169 I did plant them deep and they did grow, but this method from MIGardener would be be so much easier and save me a great deal of time and work. I want to try this method with my new asparagus bed.
@Poison Ivyif this is the first year for the roots, then allow the spindly ones to grow. In fact, don't cut from your asparagus the first year. They need to grow and mature.

Yes,it takes a while before you can harvest asparagus. Mine are 24 years old and still producing. I freeze dry,bottle and freeze. If properly cared for last forever.
Oh my.. i planted my asparagus roots about an hr ago. I didn't soak them, they looked really dry, and I planted the crown about 6" deep. Should I dig them back out and redo??

I have to keep an eye out for more plants in your shop. I get seeds from you a lot. My husband had a field day growing jellymelons. Anyone else try those? Literally everyone who tried them just sat giggling while eating them. Funny but weird!

I got bare root trees while the ground was still frozen so there was no way I could get them in the ground. I wish you had given some ideas for that problem.
@@freeinJesus this didn't happen this year but on a year where winter hung on for a long time and I didn't have big enough pots or soil to put them in.
@@freeinJesus No the plants didn't survive. I had hoped they would send the trees in relation to the weather in my zne but they send it in relation to their zone. I hope he does address the situation. I would like to know. I have searched the net and the info it limited.

I bought strawberry plants from you guys and they're still not showing growth. It's been 11 days in strawberry planting bag. I soaked them first then planted but still no life signs. :( Hope something happens soon.
Strawberries are very particular about how deep they need to be planted.
Nearly killed half of mine because I wasn't giving them enough light.

Sounds like a few of us have been having issues with the bare root strawberries. Might be a problem with whatever grower they're using. Sorry. I know how disappointing it is! :(
Hello.. I received my cherry tree in mail, but it had strays covering the roots. What should I do? I already planted it like that.. is there any way I can take it out again and do what ever I need to do and plant it again?

I just received bare root strawberries. They seem much fresher than I was expecting. I don't know of that's a good or bad thing. Some of the green tips broke off during planting. Will they be ok?
Quick question, I planted asparagus roots about 3-4 weeks ago. 7 out of 8 roots have already produced and are close to 12” tall. My last root hasn’t made any progress at all. Is there anything I could do? Or should I assume this root is dead?

I didn't see anything on your website about bare-rooted plants. There was almost nothing available. so I had to go to Menard's and Bachmann's for seeds. I'm kinda miffed i missed it. For someone who's renting in Metro Detriot and not allowed to plant my fruit trees in the ground what would suggest for over wintering potted fruit trees and strawberries?

I got 3 types of strawberry and some asparagus as bare roots from the Migardener shop. The strawberries survived at about 90% and all the asparagus survived. I haven't given up hope on the few strawberries that didn't sprout.. yet. So far I am very pleased. My strawberries started flowering with only a few leaves on each plant. Is that normal or a sign of stress?

How can you tell if strawberries are dead? Theres not much to snip.... and some of mine are wet and red on the inside, some are dry and yellow.. I'm assuming the dry yellow are dead?

I bought dormant strawberry plants from you...and received them a couple weeks ago. They were brown and sticky. They were not dormant, they were rotted and moldy. I haven't been able to reach you by phone or by leaving a text
That's interesting, Sharon; I had a bad experience with my bare root Quinault strawberries as well. I don't remember a moldy smell... I thought it was more of an earthy smell... they definitely had soil still clinging to the roots though. They weren't clean. I soaked them, planted them, fertilized them, and a couple of plants struggled to put out leaves and then died. Not a single plant made it. I took photos and sent them to MIGardener Customer Service with a description of what I did. Never heard back. That was over two weeks ago. I think they are overwhelmed at the moment with everyone ordering seeds, but I'm hoping I'll get a response at some point. It sounds like they may be using other growers to ship bare root plants, so maybe there's a problem with one of them not shipping good plants. In any case, I've missed the strawberry window for this year. Hope you get some resolution with your order.

I can't tell you how many bare root fruit tree I received that has NO, NONE, ZERO NADA feeder roots. They come with 1 or 2 'main' roots that are chopped off after 4 inches or so. I don't think a single one that arrive that way take. I naturally NEVER use the nursery again. They ones that come with larger root masses usually do better. I don't understand why don't nurseries take better care. Sorry for the rant this well done video triggered me.

Here's a question: Have you ever had to garden in excessive rain? Over here in West Central IL, we have had almost four inches in a week. My garden looks like dirt soup, and we have rain projected into June. Any tips to try to keep things alive?

I've done the same with my strawberry plant except I planted them directly in a red solo cup plus every time I transplant I've never fanned out the roots and they all are doing fantastic
So odds are your good cuz the roots with fan out by themselves

Well Luke, I already wrote to your customer service department over two weeks ago (haven't heard back yet, but I know you guys have been super busy), but my Quinault strawberries did not make it despite my doing pretty much everything you suggested here (and I received them awhile ago before this video aired). The only thing I did differently was let the plants soak overnight, but I planted them straight away the following day and I did use Trifecta in the planting holes as well. A couple of the plants struggled to put out a few small leaves, but they dried up by the next day. I kept them all well watered and mulched. I persisted with them for over two weeks, and nothing. Seems odd that not a single plant made it, so I don't know what happened. Very disappointing.

@@tamz0309Funny you should ask. I did, and received a full refund. I tried again with the bare roots this year, thinking maybe last year's batch was substandard, but unfortunately I'm seeing it happen all over again so I have to assume the plants are simply not healthy by the time they arrive. Only one looked like it had any life in it but it quickly died despite my best efforts. So it looks like I will be asking for another refund and no more bare root strawberries for me!

BUMMER =C I wish that I had known about soaking roots a week ago, as I've just planted some Bare Root Asparagus crowns, and I didn't soak them beforehand. However, I did make sure that I gave the soil a really good soaking, and that their roots had a good amount of fertiliser around them... so fingers crossed >_

How come your bareroots have all those nice root fibres. My bareroots dont have any of those ! Everything is still dormant.
I planted my asparagus way too deep (crowns about 6 inches deep). This was about 3 weeks ago. Can/should I dig them up and bring them closer to the surface? Is it too late for them?
I did the same thing. Everything I read and watched said amend 12 inches deep and plant crowns 6 inches deep. It would have been a lot less work if the asparagus came with instructions saying to disregard all other instructions and only plant an inch deep 🙄 ugh....
@Poison Ivy I purchased bare root strawberries from a different company and all of them are setting fruit. In the past I did bare root Roses from the same company and lost several. Don't be totally turned off of bare root by this experience. Timing and health of the plant are very important too, not just planting styles.
Dig hole 12 in. deep,amend soil 6 in. deep,plant asparagus crowns in trench covering crown by about 1 in. soil, as asparagus sprouts slowly fill trench. Filling the trench may take several years until completely filled in
