  • THE CONTEXT
The fight for women’s rights in Nepal has been ongoing for the past 100 years, often aimed at helping women to live dignified lives. Since the advent of democracy, the movement has taken great strides when it comes to the issues of protecting and empowering women. In addition to incorporating women’s rights as the fundamental rights, the Constitution of Nepal further ensures women’s rights to safe motherhood and reproductive health, education, health, employment, equal pay, social security and property rights. The gains women have achieved in the country have been reflected in their improving life expectancy, increased literacy rate and employment rate, and decreased maternal mortality rate. However, while there have been laws created for the protection of women, the key problem remains in their proper implementation. Furthermore, despite some encouraging progress in the context of women's empowerment, and their inclusion across social, economic and political fronts, some of the existing laws still hinder women’s overall growth. Recently, related laws and policies (including the citizenship bill, travel ban bill, and the statute of limitation for one year) have faced major criticism. For the second episode of the “नीतिका कुरा: Policy Talks”, our in-house researcher Ms. Anusha Basnet sits with Mohna Ansari, Lawyer and a former Human Rights Commissioner, to discuss the contemporary legal and policy issues related to women and their empowerment in Nepal.
नीतिका कुरा: Policy Talks is an occasional video series conceptualized and produced by Nepal Institute for Policy Research (NIPoRe).
