This is one of my all-time favorite horror-comedies. Blotchy cars used to be pretty common where i lived. People would buy a car with dents and/or rust, repair the damage with filler (Bond-o), sand and prime it, then drive it that way until they got around to painting it. The car is safe and functional. It just looks weird with the unpainted body filler and primer. A cheap, neglected classic car can become a restored beauty in the right hands, but going the DIY route does take time and resources.
The reason effects hold up in these older films is because they're largely practical and even after all these years, the work, dedication and skills put into ot all still shows through.
In my mind when I watched the movie, I imagined that it had to do with the whole Adam & Eve thing. And the taunting and eating the apple of sin. I just love the idea. Maybe Jerry being the snake/Devil? I choose to believe this is the case. lol
His servant/roommate was a creature that has many names over many mythologies; often, they are called Thralls, but in Vampire: The Masquerade specifically, they are called Ghouls. This guy really seemed similar to that, because he was a form of undead, but could walk in the sun, and when they did kill him, all the years he didn't age caught up with him all at once. And Dandridge himself was very powerful, so this tells me they were both quite old. As for vampires turning into wolves, our modern conception of monsters and fantasy creatures having clear distinct types is very recent; go back not even 200 years, and the line between things like vampires, werewolves, and even witches was quite blurred. Same with fairies and elves and such, the difference between Fae creatures was pretty minimal
The Fright Night TV show in the movie is based on a real late night TV horror movie show from the 1970s called Fright Night that aired in Los Angeles from 1970 to 1981, hosted by actor Larry Vincent who starred as the host, Sinister Seymour. After Vincent died in 1981, the network revamped the show (pardon the pun) and relaunched it as Elvira's Movie Macabre, hosted by Cassandra Peterson as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, from 1981 to 1986. Also, vampires being able to change in wolves is part of the vampire legends. They've been known to take the form of bats, wolves, rats and smoke. Love the reaction and "Fright Night 2" doesn't get enough respect, so hopefully you guys watch it as well.
In Vegas we had Saturday Fright at the Movies with Count Cool Rider an Elvisesque vampire who made terrible puns and better jokes. He was played by Danny Koker of count's customs
Roddy McDowall (Peter Vincent) was 56/57 years-old when they made this, since you asked if they made up a 'pretty young actor to make them look old'. He actually did look young for his age (his whole life - kind of like Michael J. Fox or Tobey Maguire). Most famous for playing the chimpanzee Cornelius in Planet of the Apes (1968) and Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) as well the chimpanzee Caesar in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972).
Roddy McDowall was in quite a bit of horror and sci-fi back in the day. Like you said he did I believe all the Planet of the Apes movies, and was even in the short lived TV series based on it. He was in some classic movies as well such as Cleopatra and The Longest Day. Don't know if he ever won and Oscar. But he was a solid supporting actor in everything he did.
The car wasn't half painted, it had rust repair. You don't see it much these days but back then lots were doing patchwork repairs on rust at home. Filler, sanding, then a bit of matt undercoat paint.
Brewster's Mustang was owned by Writer/Director Tom Holland. He totatal3d it in a wreck a few years later. Mattel made a model toy of it. Peter Vincent was played by Roddy McDowell - he's probably most famous for play good-chimp 'Cornelius' in the original Planet of the Apes.
"Steam in the alleyway, steam in the house..." Mist, Kat. Vampires are associated with mist. They turn into mist in Stoker's Dracula, and 'misty moors' is a common element of gothic horror, which Fright Night draws much inspiration from.
An '80s classic - Roddy McDowall was an esteemed actor who dabbled in both horror & sci-fi (he's best known for the original PLANET OF THE APES franchise - worth a binge, Kat) and his character Peter Vincent is an inside nod to horror icons Peter Cushing & Vincent Price. Well played with the admission 😂. Evil Ed coming back was because Peter took the stake out of his heart, which in older lore, would bring them back to life.
what I love about this movie is that it treats it semi realisticly how people will respond, it's not A) the ever sekptic that ignores the truth, or the one that instantly believes, there is conflict, when they see the truth they accept, but aren't just going to believe sight unseen.

Some are even regional. Vampires often reflect their surroundings, like Mediterranean vampires able to take the form of water, waves, or even St. Elmo's fire. Northern vampires able to take the form of snow, or frost. Desert vampires able to take the form of sand, heat waves/visual distortions, or scorpions. Middle African vampires can take the form of rats, clouds of biting flies/mosquitos, or Will o' Wisps/fireflies/"corpse candles". Indian/SE Asian cats, hairless dogs, or monkeys. Central American will take the form of coyotes, vultures, owls, and poisonous serpents. Sorcerous vampires can take ANY form, including inanimate objects. The Baltics and British Isles have too many variables to even start listing. Just consider them in the Sorcerous vampire category.
He held it near the flame because if it was Holy Water, the flame would appear blue. If Peter Vincent had been as knowledgeable as he pretended, that act alone would have proved Jerry a vampire. Only a vampire would need to check.
@8:33 the two toned car is probably being restored. Parts were rusted and sanded down. The grey is probably primer to protect the bare metal from rusting again before he saves enough money for a full paint job.

Fun bit of trivia; the crazy burning vampire effect at the end was originally made to be the ghost transformation for the librarian ghost at the start of Ghostbusters, but they deemed it too scary for the tone of Ghostbusters, so it got shelved!
In the original novel, Dracula could change into a bat, wolf (or large dog), and fog or mist. He could even go out in the daylight, but he was much weaker in the daylight losing all of his vampire abilities. The whole sunlight killing vampires thing actually started with the original "Nosferatu" silent movie in the 1920s. Again, I can't recommend "Silver Bullet" enough.

@@johnnyskinwalker4095 Exactly. I could never figure out why Child's Play became so much more well known when Fright Night was the much better film. It was the precursor to The Lost Boys.
Roddy McDowall had over 270 acting credits he was the definition working actor back to 1938 . The guy never turned down a job. Biggest parts were leads in Planet of the Apes
Chris Sarandon is THE vampire for me. He is so menacing with such charm, what a terrifying combination. Everyone was so good in this, and I am so glad you liked all of the little details I've always loved. Vampire Amy is one of my nightmares occasionally. I have the trading card of her from this movie, I look at it now and then to scare myself, lol.
The music for Fright Night was composed by Brad Fidel, who is best known for having composed the music for The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Good pick! This was my favorite funny horror movie in th 80s (with An american werewolf in London). Also worth a watch The fearless vampire killers (1967)
The problem I have with Fright Night part 2 is that played up the humor too much. What makes the original a perfect movie is they took the subject matter very seriously.
@Kat great horror comedy and everyone kills it in their roles from the main actors, to the support characters all of them are doing work in this film. It's beloved for a reason
Great 80's film we often rented from local video rental stores. Btw, when i got my drivers license my parents used to always send me to return their video tapes. They wouldn't watch the horror ones my friends and i rented. 'I need to return some video tapes.'-Patrick Bateman😁
We took a vote , it was unanimous , you’re in the club. I was in my twenties during the 80’s. We all loved this relatively new genre, Horror / Comedy . Fright Night , The Lost Boys, American Werewolf… , Gremlins, CreepShow annd many more. And now we love watching your reactions. Keep up the great work Kat-A-Ranma !
Yay, finally we got to my favorite movie! It's so funny that you didn't recognize the actor playing Peter Vincent. That's Roddy McDowall, he was a character actor that appeared in so many films throughout his life because he started as a child actor. The movie he starred in as a kid introduced him to his best friend, Elizabeth Taylor.
The Mustang was originally red, the grey primer is sprayed on top of paint in spots where body work was done. Usually the whole car will get repainted when all the rust/dent repairs are finished.
I believe his assistant would be what's called a Ghoul. If I remember correctly, a Ghoul is given a small portion of the vampires power allowing them to be stronger and harder to kill than a normal human, but not being a full vampire allows them to be in the sunlight.
I always assumed and the director confirmed in a commentary that Jerry's roommate Billy Cole was intended to be a Renfield type character or "ghoul". A ghoul is generally considered in vampire fiction to be a human who has been fed vampire blood. The blood keeps them under the vampires control, but it also often gives them some of the vampires power and keeps them from aging.
Kat, I loved seeing your reaction to this great film, you never disappoint. In the original 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker, Dracula could change into a large Black dog which was wolf-like. This is a great film from 1985, it was remade in 2011, but it lacked the charm of the original.
Well Kat I've finally subscribed Just so I could explain the car to you :) - See back in those days you'd get an older classic car and slowly fix it up as money allowed - the white spots were areas where body work was done and primered within intent to paint it as money allowed :) Glad I was able to clear that up :)
It's been so much fun watching you "join the club". It's like getting to see all of these great movies for the first time. Thanks for sharing your scary movie journey. 😊

So you see now Kat? This is why arming yourself with horror knowledge is a strength You are one of us gal! Embrace it! Be emboldened by it! UNLEASH YOUR POTENTIAL!!!
Also in many of the old stories staking wasn't foolproof. Beheading and burning were required because if the stake were removed the vampire would rise again. I think this is the reason Evil Ed appeared again, because Peter Vincent pulled out the stake. This movie is actually really smart in terms of folklore and movie lore!
Hey Kat, It's been ages since I saw Fright Night so I was enjoying it right along with you. A couple of fun movie suggestions are (1) Love at First Bite (2) Student Bodies
This is one of the first horror films that really made an impact on me as a kid. From seeing the scary poster in the local video shop as a toddler, to trying to watch it a few years later and getting freaked out by the transformation scenes. It's such a fun film which gets the right balance of funny, gruesome and scary.
To answer your question about the car he was driving. When you buy a muscle car and it has some rust on it and you want to bring it back to what it look like before. You just fix the rust areas and then spray primer on those areas so the bare metal does not rust again before you do the final paint job.
The Vampire vs Werewolf thing is a recent addition to the mythos; started in 1943 with Universal Picture's film Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein were Dracula faces a werewolf, and again in 1944 with _House of Frankenstein._ An animosity between the two popped up in the 80's and 90s in a few places, like a cartoon _The Real Ghostbusters_ and the _Tales from the Crypt_ TV show. It was fully cemented into lore after a popular TTRPG game, _World of Darkness_ established a primal war between the two, but gained it's final place in public lore with the 2002 film _Underworld._
That compilation was hilarious 😂 Did you notice the larger canines in her wonderful, expressive and perfectly sized mouth? I didn't until the end discussion.
44:36. I was 15 when this came out. I loved horror movies, my dad...not so much. But he loved this movie and American Werewolf in London because the werewolf transformation BLEW HIS MIND!!
Here's a few facts about vampires that non horror fans either forgot or never knew. Vampires are limited shapeshifters. Everyone knows that they can turn into bats but what some people don't know is that they can turn into wolves. And what very few people remember or know is they have a third form... Mist. Vampires cannot maintain these shapes for very long but they give them a giant advantage when hunting their prey. When they're in the form of mist vampires can instantly turn people by getting their victim to walk right through them.
A fun bit of trivia. The horror movie host's name Peter Vincent is a mash-up of the names of two horror film greats, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price.
"He's slurping some glurp-" First great Kat quote of 2025.

The real horror of the movies you watch is that we have to avert our gaze at nakedness 😁
You really played the long game with the doll in a corner joke. Can't wait for the duck reveal.
The reason I fell in love with horror movies
The music for Fright Night was composed by Brad Fidel, who is best known for having composed the music for The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
best soundtrack ever
Another 80’s classic is The Hidden. Absolutely Definitely worth it.
Roddy McDowall was born in the 1920s so he wasn't a spring chicken when he made this in 85.. his hair looks a lot better than normal though 🙂
Good pick! This was my favorite funny horror movie in th 80s (with An american werewolf in London). Also worth a watch The fearless vampire killers (1967)
The sequel is really under-appreciated and worth a fun watch.
I saw the sequel on RUclips. I had no idea there was a sequel! I enjoyed that movie too.😊
@@heavenknows4857 I had it on VHS! The cover art was real nice.
Amy's wide vampire grin is giving me ATTACK ON TITAN vibes
OMG she did it! One of the best vamp movies of the 80s. Love ya Kat.
The sequel, Fright Night 2 is very underrated. It's a good flick.
But the remake is not a good movie.
I think it’s better than the original!
The problem I have with Fright Night part 2 is that played up the humor too much. What makes the original a perfect movie is they took the subject matter very seriously.
Fright Night 2 was complete steaming hot garbage. I don't know what sweet sweet drugs you all have in your system to be deeming the sequel to be good.
You obviously haven't seen it in awhile. Much better than you remember
Can't try again... and don't call me Shirley 😂
I saw the remake to this first. I really liked it but finally saw this movie. This one is SO much wilder than I expected. Chris Sarandon is Amazing.
The Mustang was originally red, the grey primer is sprayed on top of paint in spots where body work was done. Usually the whole car will get repainted when all the rust/dent repairs are finished.
The grey spots on the car is primer put on wrecked spots or dints before you repaint a car.
I believe his assistant would be what's called a Ghoul. If I remember correctly, a Ghoul is given a small portion of the vampires power allowing them to be stronger and harder to kill than a normal human, but not being a full vampire allows them to be in the sunlight.
I think that you would like the remake of this film . It's changed enough that it's a whole different movie. :)
The Original Fright Night is amazing it’s one of my all time favorite vampire movies ever made it’s a great movie
The soundtrack is 80's goodness at it's finest.
great reaction! Oh but hearing the movies I grew up with being called classics!... sucks getting old! LOL
Lol you crack me up . Another great review Kat.
If you really wanna blow your mind, look up what some of the cast later starred in ;)
LOVE this movie. We watch every Halloween season.
It's been so much fun watching you "join the club". It's like getting to see all of these great movies for the first time. Thanks for sharing your scary movie journey. 😊
Hi Kat, The Club proudly accepts you as a member in good standing. Not only that, but this club has only had two queens in its illustrious history. Vampira and Elvira, but it seems we may have our third and most lovely of all. Kat Mss...sss...s of the Dark. Thanks Kat. Love ya, P.S. Cat's Eye and Psycho 2
So you see now Kat?
This is why arming yourself with horror knowledge is a strength
You are one of us gal!
Embrace it!
Be emboldened by it!
UNLEASH YOUR POTENTIAL!!!
"Suck the venom out."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh, you were serious?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Also in many of the old stories staking wasn't foolproof. Beheading and burning were required because if the stake were removed the vampire would rise again. I think this is the reason Evil Ed appeared again, because Peter Vincent pulled out the stake. This movie is actually really smart in terms of folklore and movie lore!
Hey Kat, It's been ages since I saw Fright Night so I was enjoying it right along with you. A couple of fun movie suggestions are (1) Love at First Bite (2) Student Bodies
Love at First Bite is awesome!
BTW, the bouncer that Jerry kills at the club was one of the gang members from Friday the 13th Part 3!
You should watch Love at First Bite
Kat, you need to see 'The Hidden' 1987 a sci-fi/thriller/horror. It's a great 80's cult classic.
Kats new special effects word....Glurp!! 😅
Loved you in the Cinebinge Compilation. Love your large mouth too! 😅😅
That compilation was hilarious 😂
Did you notice the larger canines in her wonderful, expressive and perfectly sized mouth? I didn't until the end discussion.
I loved this reaction
