Yes indeed. and he only played on the original and only one he did concept album released in 1970 that went on to sell over 1 million copies. I know you didn’t but most people get confused and think he played the role on Broadway and the movie.
This song was released in 1972, so if it sounds like an AC/DC song. It's because Deep Purple was an influence to AC/DC!
They were also a massive influence on Iron Maiden, Metallica, Sabbath, Queen, RHCP... I could go on.
"Deep Purple - Made In Japan" (1972) is a must-have record! < it's one of the best live-albums ever (!) recorded!

THAT riff actually appears in the third Pink Panther cartoon "We Give Pink Stamps" from 3 years before - and it was written by William Lava, Watch the cartoon and LISTEN to the music and you will hear it played on a trumpet - 3 times.
I think a you would be impressed by a live concert earlier in their career. Especially his voice. Still great and iconic.

The original video never was, until just recently. For a new release of the album Machine Head coming out in a couple of weeks to celebrate 50 years of the album ( although it is 52 😊 ).
There's an interesting story behind this song and its lyrics. They chronicle a true account of a fire at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland in 1971.

This song was about a recording studio that burned down and the smoke came across the water.
Ritchie Blackmore the man who wrote this iconic riff said it was inspired by the beginning of Beethoven's 5th symphony but backwards.
Ian is still to this day a grate singer.but in the 70s he was the best rock singer,the lord of screaming,maybe you should listen something from that period!

Only 3 of them are the original lineup, ie Ian Paice on drums, Roger Glover on bass and Ian Gillian on vocals. Steve Morse is great on lead guitar but you have to listen to the legendary Ritchie Blackmore and the irreplaceable Jon Lord on keyboard and their guitar and organ duelling. RIP Jon Lord, the Lord of the Hammond organ. Listen to some of their older recordings… you’ll be blown. Got to listen to Child in Time, Highway’s Star, Perfect Strangers, Soldier of Fortune ( a very different lineup, with David Coverdale on vocals) just to name a few…😂

The lead vocalist, Ian Gillan, sounds good, but he's 62 y/o in this 2007 live performance and his voice isn't as strong as when he was young. You should listen to their live performance of Child In Time from the 70's. Ian Gillan also sang the part of Jesus on the original 1970 recording of Jesus Christ Superstar. Their original guitarist was Richie Blackmore, but this guitarist, Steve Morse, played with them from 1994 to 2022 and he is one of the best guitarists on the planet.

Yes Ian Gillian is one of the best singger ever. Listen to Lazy, strange kind a woman, Perfect strangers, When a blind man cries and when he took part in Jesus Christ superstar and sang Gethsemane. Ian Gillian is probepbly the best rock singer together with Ronnie james dio.
