Behind the Ritual: Meeting a traditional Hmong Shaman in Laos

Exploring Laos brought me one of the most unforgettable experiences of my travels-meeting a Hmong shaman in a small village outside Luang Prabang. This story is about curiosity, connection, and stepping into a world rich with tradition and spiritual practices.
What started as a desire to go off the beaten path led me to Adam, a Hmong shop owner preserving the fading art of indigo dyeing. Through Adam’s kindness, I was introduced to a shaman whose life revolves around healing and balance. This vlog captures the intimate moments of our meeting, from his fascinating story of becoming a healer to the intricate rituals he performed.
From divination with bullhorns to energy-balancing rituals involving chickens, the experience was eye-opening, emotional, and deeply thought-provoking. Although I'm not accustomed to such ceremonies, witnessing the shaman’s trance-like state and the family’s casual involvement reminded me of the beautiful coexistence of the sacred and the everyday.
