No. It's a step backwards. It is very inefficient and expensive. Even stand-alone photodiodes, which are 10 times better than LEDs, or transistors with an exposed housing, were not good in an emergency solution either. For a miniature photovoltaic system, buy a polycrystalline or monocrystalline panel and you have more energy production for significantly less money.

But you mentioned at the end that this was an experiment and you learned that it does not make practical sense. And that was the moment when you earned my respect. For the next time try placing down a lot of photodiodes or phototransistors. Their PN junctions are more sensitive to light than to current. In case of regular LED when its poles are polarized the potential diference in the junction forces electrons to jump off the junction emitting the light and thus creating a flow of electrons (current).
Photodiodes works exactly the oposite, when photons come through the PN junction, its created a small potential difference which will push the electrons away creating current.

I wish you would've used the IR LEDs as they are plentiful in used remote controls around the world. Also, why not incorporate fresnel lenses from old projection TVs and see how much the output increases? I feel like you spent a lot of time doing something nobody else would really want to replicate. You make great videos, but I hope you spend a little more time on the concepts.
