The first horizontal line in 未 is a branch on a tree that has *not yet* grown to its full size like the other branch. A common word is 未だ (still; (not) yet).
This is opposed to 末 where the first branch has *already finished* growing bigger than the other branch. It also means treetop or tip of branch in its literal sense.
That is a funny way to remember those words haha

They card everyone in Japan if you buy alcohol. The last time I was in Japan, I was asked to provide my date of birth and I said was 3x the minimum age. They still needed my date of birth, which was way back in Showa 35.
