  • Why do some people feel completely indifferent toward sports while others build their entire identity around it? In this video, we explore the psychology of people who don’t obsess over sports, breaking down the mental frameworks, personality traits, and behavioral patterns that shape this perspective.
From social identity theory to intrinsic motivation, this deep psychological analysis explains why not everyone connects with sports culture, competition, or fandom. We examine how values, upbringing, cognitive preferences, and emotional investment influence whether someone becomes a passionate sports fan or remains entirely disengaged.
This video is ideal for viewers interested in psychology, human behavior, personality types, mindset differences, sociology, and modern culture. If you’ve ever wondered why sports don’t excite you-or why others can’t imagine life without them. This breakdown provides clarity backed by psychological principles.

Make a video about females who absolutely hate it when their husband plays video games. Almost all women do. Anything else isn't a problem, but seeing the man with a controller enjoying himself they're going for war. She or her man scrolling 5 hours on a couch on the telephone? NO problem. Watching 3 movies? NO problem. Doing nothing and look stupid out of the eyes for a full day? NO problem! The sound of a Playstation turning on? Full blown war.

When I lived in Pittsburgh and people would ask if I caught “the game” I would just say I was from New England (true) so I didn’t follow the Steelers. That they could accept. If I just flat out said I didn’t follow football at all they would look at me like I had two heads.

It's the same as people who obsess over celebrities. I've never understood why people get so wrapped up in the personal lives of people they will never meet and who will never know they exist, much less befriend them. It's so bizarre to me.

Amen! I have also never understood the obsession for celebrities ~ they have to flush the toilet, too ~ who cares what they do? Now, if someone does something good, good for them, but again, why should I obsess over it? I have my own life and times to live, and I have children and grandchildren to care about, my own projects and goals to accomplish ~ I literally have zero headspace for celebrities/ sports/ tribalism. I have too much to do and get done!

Hard agree on the celebrities thingy. I find that a strange quirk of those people. I couldn't care less about celebrities, like I call actors by the screen name from whatever I last saw them because in 99% of cases I don't know their name. I may have heard their name before but I can't put a face to it.

I agree about why people obsess over celebrities.
      I don't get it.
I don't have a "better-half" or any friends that follow celebrities that I know of.
Maybe people who obsess over celebrities lack close family ties?
      Who knows. Probably a psychologist.

Yeah same. First up my brain seems to lack the tribal triggers and shit, I don't know why maybe it's my autism. But also out of all the forms of entertainment I find sport the least engaging because it's not communicating anything. All art is a form of expression and the artist is trying to express and say something. Not sports. There's no wider message in a game other than these people got more ball scores and like, okay but why should I care?

There are at least two key factors in this, both covered in Influence by Cialdini, who has decades of academic and professional experience.
      1. People with a "poorly formed" sense of self or those who have recently experienced a personal failure are the most likely to BIRG. If you don't have many achievements of your own to showcase, you are more likely to lean heavily on the achievements of your "connections". Also see self-serving bias.
      2. According to the Principle of Association, we instinctively dislike people who are associated with bad news-even if they didn't cause it. Weathermen and messengers sharing bad news both suffer.
Before those of us with strong-self image throw too many stones, we should recognize that we live in a society where #2 applies to most social interactions.

Think about it - they're so stressed up in their lives from work and so on, so watching sports is a way to 'de-stress' for them. It is like why some people would de-stress by playing games and getting all riled up taking it so seriously.
One thing's for sure though... How they react (whether is it in sports, watching sports, computer games, and so on) reveals their character a lot.
If they love to thrash talk to their competitors or to other players, it means they will do so too in their personal or work life.
If they get very aggressive when their team loses - sore loser trait - it will also be the same in their life. If you or your kid is doing better than them/theirs, they will get pissy and toxic too. Or if their boss compliments others than them, they will get very upset. That toxic overly competitive trait.
I can confirm this after many, many experiences.

@leefi1 I am blown away at how much friends and co-workers pay for sports. From the tickets, to the playoff tickets and the special ESPN channels, pay-per-view and tailgate parties. It's literally many thousands of dollars a year. One friend is in the 5 figures with his special seats, pregame access, special clothing, and practice season seats, and that's a small town university team! I figure that's the reason that I paid off my house and retired at age 56. Different (and cheaper) activities gave me a lot more flexibility. Excuse me, I'm off to Europe now.

@jakewu7834 It's not "your country" who wins, it's some random athlete who happens to "run" for a certain country. The only reason I might care about that person is if I knew him or her personally, because otherwise this has no effect on my life and also I have no reason to be "proud" because it is no achievement of my own. It's nice for that athlete and he/she should be proud of their achievement, of course, but I'd rather be proud of my personal achievements.

    • @alphagt62
      @alphagt62 2 months ago +10

We are very much the same. Many athletes are simply born big, or tall. While many do have great talent, a lot of it involves the size they were born with. I much prefer to think about a talented musician, he has worked hard to learn his instrument, he makes something beautiful that brings joy to many. And musicians aren’t in competition, there’s plenty of room at the top for so many talented musicians. I fully understand that both earn a living the same way. How many tickets can you sell? Athlete or musician, they get paid according to how many tickets they sell. But for whatever reason, I can not get excited about any athletic endeavor. Especially now days, when players are free agents, and they might play for your favorite team, and next year they’ll play against your favorite team. They have no loyalty whatsoever, they go wherever the biggest offer is. So why should I support a team, when the players on that team have no loyalty to it? And, I guess I really didn’t get along with cocky jocks in school either, so why on earth would I support people like that? I think a lot of people watch football in particular just to fit in, to be able to talk about that big game at work. I really don’t care if I fit in at work either. And I usually don’t.

Totally agree. I don't care if other people like sports, but I don't like it when sports (even their mere existence) become my problem in any way, much less when I have to pay for it in some way or other.
And if you think that's bad, it was even worse when I was in college. The entire school's identity was focused on their sports teams, they imply that to be a student there is to be a member of that sports "tribe," at my school they called us all "Rams." Millions of dollars spent on a new stadium (and think of how high tuition is), and all the school facilities shut down during games. School felt like a sports franchise with a side gig in education. I didn't want any of that, I just wanted to go to class and get a degree!
I can see the reason for it though - they were trying to build tribalistic loyalty among students and alumni. And it works, sports fans are still loyal to their schools decades later, have stickers on their cars, wear the shirts, are more likely to hire fellow alumni, join alumni organizations, encourage their kids to go there, donate money, and so on. While I, not a sports fan, felt like any affiliation I had with that school was done the moment I had my degree, see it as a place I once paid money to receive a service. I feel more loyalty to my high school (at the time they had Ultimate Frisbee as their only sport, they didn't take it seriously, I was on the team myself, which was only possible because they didn't take it seriously) and the community college I went to before university (I think they had some club-level sports?), because I felt like those places actually focused on meaningful education rather than sports, and perhaps community-focused things not centered on sports.

It also trains people for taking sides, and identifying with whatever side you take such as politics. It’s a form of mass hypnosis, but the players themselves that’s fine kicking up all is an activity that’s healthy. I can respect someone’s dedication to be able to throw a ball, catch a ball, or play a game with great mastery, but to dwell on it at all is quite odd. In a different time, it is an analog to having mastered some aspect of combat or warfare, which is truly commendable from a biological standpoint, but to have mastered a game - while in a way impressive - is really just a tremendous waste of time.

  • @sportsentertainmentco9877

I think you hit a key point of people that really don’t care or aren’t obsessed with sports just haven’t felt the camaraderie amongst the fans. I’ve been to different cities and have become instant bonds with random strangers. I never knew in my life yet the team in itself brought us together and we enjoyed our day. A lot of introverts do not understand that, and are not open to socialize with the world. This is a very common thing in the USA because they just spend a lot of time by themselves or at home and don’t spend enough time outside touching grass.

Most involve things like home improvement, or business, or health, or problems I’m trying to solve, or 100’s of things. The list goes on and on.

I guess we met when it was off season because he was so smart, funny and I really enjoyed being around him...till I guess football started up. I like a good game, I'm a hockey person myself but I will watch ANY game that is exciting, doesn't matter who is playing--people on TV or the neighborhood kids down the park. But to fall into a medical depression over it is just completely psychotic to me.

This video brought back a memory I rarely talk about. Growing up, I was the only one in my family who didn’t care about sports. Every weekend, the house would be loud with cheers or frustration, and I would quietly retreat to my room with a book, a notebook, or just my thoughts. I remember once being asked, “Why don’t you care? Don’t you feel anything?”
At the time, I felt ashamed. Like something was missing in me. But the truth was, I felt everything-just differently. While everyone else was riding the emotional highs and lows of a game, I was deeply moved by music, by late-night conversations, by watching someone I loved slowly heal from a hard season in their life. Those moments didn’t come with jerseys or trophies, but they mattered to me in a way sports never could.
Years later, I realized I wasn’t empty. I was present. I wasn’t detached. I was investing my emotions where I could actually show up, where my care could change something, even if it was small. This video didn’t just explain psychology-it felt like permission. Permission to be different, to stop apologizing for not screaming at a screen, and to finally understand that I was never broken. I was just playing a different game.

I just never got into them, my family was never that into spectator sports, we prefer to actually do stuff instead of watching people do stuff. That's not to say I don't enjoy going to a stadium and seeing a game in person, but it's more for the experience of going to the stadium than the game itself.
And the idea that non-sports interested people are boring it was always ridiculous to me. If anything it's the sports obsessed people who are boring. All they wanna do is talk about whatever team they're obsessed with and the stats and the players and their fantasy football league.
You could not pay me to care about any of these things, mostly because they have no direct impact on my life and do nothing to improve society as a whole (yes I know how arrogant that sounds shut the fuck up). I am much more interested in new ideas and information.
I spend most of my time watching educational scientific, historical, medical and social commentary videos on RUclips or discussing these things in person with my friends. And most of the people I know who are really into sports struggle to hold a conversation with me about these topics whether it's because they are uneducated on them or simply disinterested.
I also find that people who are obsessed with sports also tend to be incredibly political and very much one side or the other, going back to the whole tribalism thing. They seem to really get swept up in the whole cult of personality while failing to see what's actually going on behind the curtain. Meanwhile I am kind of in the middle, I detest both sides equally for similar and opposing reasons. Which means that in the mind of those prone to partisanship I am obviously in favor of the guy they hate and hate the guy they like, which pisses me off to no one because no fuck them and fuck you I don't want anything to do with any of this shit you're fucking crazy

I once had a taxi driver who couldn't believe I wasn't into football (there was a national game on that night).
He was totally exasperated, shaking his head in disbelief, then the killer question....'Well, what are you into then?'.
When I replied that I liked music, walking, nature, books, art, and history (especially Roman/medieval) he said 'Is that it?'...😅.
I'm not an intellectual by any means, I have a manual job, and didn't get any further than a secondary school education, I jist don't like sports.

Me not liking sports has been the biggest barrier in making friends.
When i first meet a stranger, the topic of conversation constantly turns to sports. I literally have to say "other than knowing the basic concepts/rules of sports, I know nothing about any teams, recent games or anything."
This usually results in the other person to walk away or stumble out of the conversation and dismiss themselves

Even as a kid, I could never comprehend why it mattered where the sportsball goes.. through a hoop, over a field goal, into a net ...or how many sports points are acquired. It all seemed like such a ridiculous waste of time - especially when there were so many fascinating real things to do and learn about. There was a big forest nearby that was full of cool paths, winding creeks, wildflowers, and even an unused rail siding with some abandoned train cars on it. It was a longish hike, but an amazing adventure that few other kids knew about. Even now, I'd rather spend time doing something like that than watching or playing sports.

Ads, times where players aren’t doing anything, streaming subscriptions, etc. I enjoyed football when I played, but watching it is just boring as fuckkk. So, what the video says about “living vicariously” definitely makes sense with me. I enjoy the sports, just not living vicariously through OTHER players.

The guy that was promoted had started playing football in 'little league' and was still playing football, that year they didn't renew my contract and i politely asked why and got the "were downsizing" excuse. @kjhnsn7296 I wish to challenge the idea that playing team sports shows the ability to work with others. Experience over many years in many workplaces, taught me that viewpoint is often believed by managers, but refuted by what happens in a team at work. The people I used to work with who played sports talked as if they were good team players, but in fact most were so competitive that they undermined the team's work by trying to be the star player, rather than working for the team as a whole to do well. What is really needed to make a work team succeed is people who are willing to put the team's result before their own result.

Whatever study this video is based on misses a larger and more relevant truth in that "ALL" have some sort of idol that their identity can be found in. It is in our nature to idolize... The difference is in the "WHAT". Is it the creature or the Creator? Sports fanataacism is just one of many ways that people idolize the creature; however, many other ways exist (Theatre, Government, Hobbies, SELF, etc.)...

I was the percussion section leader and band captain when I was in high school. I rooted against my school's football team because if they didn't win games and go to district or state playoffs, the band could stop learning new marching shows for halftime shows and focus on developing our musical skills. One of my high school class mates broke his neck in a particularly violent and unfortunate hit during a game and never walked again. I'm sure these experiences shaped my livelong inability to understand humans' fascination with chasing balls around and found football to be especially ridiculous.

Maybe for some it's the nude virgins on the sidelines. An Anthropologist wrote a synopsis of a football game way back in the 1970's. I tried to find it, but Google was no help. In the synopsis, the ball represented an egg, or fertility. Getting it across the other team's line was equivalent to impregnating their queen. The virgins I mentioned were there to again promote fertility and the implied reward for outstanding performance during the game. It was a long paper, but you get the drift. It's all about the ball, until it's about tribal fertility.

My father thought that organized sports were a huge waste of resources, so we never really watched any at home. Instead, he showed us how to build and fix things, go camping, fishing, hunting, birding, snorkeling, hiking and exploring all the cool places there are out there. I believe I'm better for that. Thanks Dad!

Indeed! It definitely sounds like a more productive use of your time! Rather than sitting around watching others perform the ‘action’ you were out doing it….as a family and increasing those familial tribal bonds.

On the opposite side of this, my dad regularly took us to sporting events. To this day (he’s 88), talking about our teams is still a big part of our relationship.

My father screamed at the sports, and then at us.

It was always funny to me, hearing my roommates say stuff like "I can't memorize all this stuff for Bio!" but then talk about this one wide receiver that used to play for the Rams, was second round pick, went to Michigan State and was red shirted his first year.

@Aussiebushcophomesteading I think you're confusing it for the World Series. In the World Series, only US and Canadian teams play. The World Cup includes most countries.

I had the best day ever at the gym yesterday, apparently the super bowl was on. Place was empty.
