I love this song. I feel like some of the criticisms are so ridiculous. People hear a hip hop beat and "sexual" lyrics and automatically want to bring out the pitchforks and torches.
If you listen to the lyrics, the song is about individuality and not putting women into boxes. This has been one of her main messages all along. She has not let go of her morals. She has not sold out. It's the same message wrapped in a fun (and a bit more marketable) package.
I feel like some of the critics who are "disappointed" in Janelle are only putting her into one more box. You expect her to be asexual, revolutionary, and wholesome all the time. You're holding her to an unfair high standard and restricting her from growing as an artist.
I can't speak for others, but my criticism is more about the artistic direction of this than anything else. I'm not really concerned about the sexual angle.
I was always interested in her music because it was unique, but if she is just going to start peddling the same banal dross that can be heard on the radio, then you'll forgive my indifference.
Right but people judge for it being different when she's an artist that crosses several genres including hip-hop

Yeah I don't get how the same people who praise her for boldly crossing genre boundaries are suddenly upset that she made a club song. It's like they expect everything she ever makes to sound like it could have been on ArchAndroid - either that or they forgot that her 'home' genre is R&B, which has always been raunchy, jubilant, and danceable.
The thing I've noticed is that the lyrics aren't even that sexual. Everything Janelle says in the song can be applied to Yoga poses.
Yeah, while this is definitely a club joint, it's actually a pretty clever subversion of the usual themes at play in these songs. People are just too busy whining that this song isn't another Babopbyeya to actually pay attention to the lyrics.

I feel like she underplayed how great this song was. Her message is clear as DAY if you honestly understand her morals, reason, and individuality. She played it smart and presented it in a way that people these days only wanna hear shit as, "sexual" and up beat. Watch her interview and you'll understand why shes doing everything she's doing. This isn't solely about her anymore. It's about leading a way to a specific type of righteousness that she originally presented herself with. Nothing really changed except for the fact that she's a name that everyone knows now, so you either follow or you don't.
All of Janelle's work is her best work, she puts her heart and soul into everything. The vocabulary in this song is unlike anything else in the genre, which makes this a unique piece of meticulously crafted artwork. You all need to respect this JAM... and share it with your friends.... it's a banger.

All these 'day one' fans acting as if Janelle hasn't always been experimenting with different sounds. She has eclectic taste, why do you expect her to do the same things forever? Also this is just for the EP, it may just be for fun and to bring attention to her artists, who knows what her next LP will be like. I don't believe she is changing(not for the worst at least). It would take a lot more than this one jam to come to the conclusion that she is changing. I see this as opening a door for her new artists... that she is moreso adapting to the new direction(s) of her artists as a leader. Any good leader follows as well as leads. She has been doing this for a while now, so for her to create this "get in shape" kind of track is a smooth move right now. I guess to understand her comfort in this track is to also have knowledge of the mindset that pertains to YOGA.
Bottom line: I'm loving this song.

Kyndall Lanae I agree. And I feel we will see this as more of her artists release songs. One of her bands, St. Beauty, has a laid back, soft tone and if Janelle releases a song with them, it will most likely be like that.
