    I think one of the main reasons I like your videos so much is that you produce them like you were sitting right beside the viewer and having a conversation. About a year ago I ran across a video produced by mixup98 that featured the "Kmart Special" 30 TK or Marlin 336a if you prefer. I was so impressed with his results with his rifle that I made a bee line to a local gun store/pawn shop and purchased a 1954 edition Marlin 336SC (the twin to the 336a and the TK for all intents and purposes and does not have micro groove rifling) that had caught my eye several days before I saw his video. The only thing I had to do to my "new" Marlin was replace the broken butt plate (a common problem with Marlins of that era I've since discovered). I plan on trying some cast bullets in my SC, as well as a pristine 1971 production Winchester M94 I purchased recently, as opposed to jacketed bullets. I want to thank you for all the great videos you provide as they always teach me something and very often inspire me to give something a try even if I have previously avoided it. Take care and keep up the great videos.

    Great video! I just picked up a Marlin 336A made in 1950! Mint condition. Waffle top receiver never drilled/tapped. Must have been a closet queen all it’s life. Love finding old guns in good condition. Lever guns rule!

    About 15 years or so ago, I stumbled upon a 1972 Western Auto Revelation 30-30 in a pawn shop. I bought the gun for very little because the stock was in very bad shape. Took it home and took it all apart and cleaned it. Everything looked good and the barrel was in pretty good shape and the action was smooth so I put a synthetic stock on it, I added a scope and took it to the range. I was very pleasantly surprised st how well it shot. Very sweet little gun. I used it for several years as my brush gun. I still have it and it is destined to be go to my grandson.

    Why did it take me so long to find this video? I have had a 1973 336A for over 15 years. I just started shooting it a couple of year ago and I didn't find any videos for it then. Mine likes fast loads. I am shooting max loads of H4895 with 150 gr. Sierras. It also does well with Leverevolution. Mine came with an original Weaver 4X. I haven't tried it with iron sights. I believe Williams makes a peep sight for it, mounts on the receiver.
    Now, I am looking for a 30TK. Then, I'll have long barrel and short barrel versions.
    I have read that pine tar looks good to start but will eventually turn black. Just what I read, no experience.

    Beautiful piece of Americana. Nice video! I have a 1976 336 .30-30 20" barrel ... I tried a new one in-store and it felt so stiff. Still a good buy for people in my opinion new but if one can find an older already broken in .... get it.

    That forend rattle must be nature of the beast. I have one made in 57 in .35rem. and had to do the string trick (tarred bank line) on it . that pine tar finish has to be one of the best tricks I have picked up from you.

    Some really quality firearms you have. You are correct in saying most people have never seen that model of 22 mag you have. I know I haven't and I go to a lot of gun shows here in Texas.

    Glad to see you are enjoying the 30-30, it is a delightful cartridge, and is a joy to reload for. There is just legions and legions of load info out there. It is agreeable to a myriad of powders too.
    Per my last comment, I got into casting to after buying a 336C in 30-30. The Lee 170 FN is a decent bullet for the rife, providing that it casts large enough. My rifle started behaving when I ended up with a .311" bullet. The trick is to fill the chamber, not to get to fixed on the groove size. That rifle will probably slug at .308", but the odds are on that the chamber will allow a .311" with no issue. Trailboss makes an easy shooting load, H335 is a bit fast for it, and I have got excellent results with Varget and of course, the old reliable 16 grains of 2400.
    On a whim, I sized some 00 buckshot with a lee push through sizer to .311 and loaded one with 6 grains of unique for an excellent rat round. The trick is to simply seat it to the edge of the rounded "nose" of the pellet. After you size it, it looks like a miniature bullet!
    As usual, many thanks for taking us along, we appreciate the vids.
    Thanks,

    I also hate putting a scope on a classic lever action rifle. I'm surprised you're not using a receiver sight. Receiver sights will shrink your groups considerably and for me at least is a lot easier for snap shootin.

    I just closed the deal on a Glenfield 30a. Perhaps I'll try the pine tar mixture on the wood. Do you strip the existing finish off first?
    //Update the pine tar worked great. Highly recommended.

    Recently acquired a 1949 336a with a steal tube Weaver scope. My only complaint is the wood doesn’t match my other marlins and a may actually move it along and get a newer 336A to match my others

    i own a 1950 336A in 35 rem, amazing lever rifle. The only other rifle that tops it in the accuracy department is my 1979 Winchester 94 legendary frontiersman 38-55

    I love lever action rifles as well. I am currently on the lookout for a used Marlin 336 3030. I would prefer a 24inch version made prior to the addition of the cross bolt safety, but have not found one so far. Did u ever make a video of removing and refinishing a stock and forearm with your pine tar process. If yes, please direct me to it. I really enjoy your videos.

    I have removed my front sight hoods because the sighting down the barrel lines up better for me. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

    Great video brother.. I have to look up one of your vids on your pine tar.... I got my self a new Marlin in 30/30 4 weeks ago.. she the best one I ever had... It took down my first deer and another one for my nephew... I got lucky bro... She runs great and not sticky at all.. But I also seen some bad ones out there too.. so I guess its the luck of the draw... Much respect and blessings from South Orgeon...

    The front sight didn't come with a hood? It's my brothers favorite rifle also.

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  8 лет назад +5

      I am sure it did, but it has been left off. Not uncommon to see, I don't care for the hooded sight myself, I prefer to let more light on the sight. Just this morning I took the front sight off, and replaced it with a slightly taller Marbles beaded sight which is what works best for me. Somebody makes a skeletonized sight hood for Marlins that could work, protects the sight, without blocking the light.

    I always did like the 336a with the longer barrel. the only reason i don't own one is the barrel timing. every one i have seen for sale had the barrel out of time and the sight at about 11-11:30...... I can't stand it :)

    Hi I really enjoy your video's, I need some help on a 1947 Marlin model 36 30 30 it is a rifle that offered to me the problem is the rifle is missing the the elevator ramp on the rear Marbles sight. I was wondering if you can help me trying to locate the elevator ramp or even acquiring a whole new rear Marbles sight. i'm not sure how to get a hold of you but this is a good start.
    Thank you for your consideration.

    I always wanted a 336A ever since I saw it in the Marlin catalogue back when I was a kid in the early 70s. By then marlin was only offering that model in 30-30. In the late 40s and 50s it was available in various calibers. I'm currently looking for one in .32 win or .35 rem. Unfortunately they are getting way up in price and finding one that isn't beat to hell is getting tough. But fortunately even an old JM stamped beater is way better than a new crap "remlin".

  • @gapster46
    @gapster46 8 лет назад +2

    The action of my Remlin 1894 is really rough compared to my older JM stamped 1894 which is very smooth. I’ve heard Remington is improving, but my experience with them and their nonexistent warranty work says I’ll never buy another Remington anything.

      Remington is making some improvements...I saw a new 1895 45/70 this past weekend and it was superb. Yes I actually said it. Fit, finish and polish were as good as any older "JM" gun...The only flaw that kept me from saying perfect was the laser burned checkering. Still, I do not advise purchase of a Remlin sight unseen.
