+blinkbunny17 thumbs up for linking to the play. everyone talking about it but i dont have time to watch the whole video to find that specific play! so thanks :D
I don't know why everyone is saying that was a great play, or what constitutes a a great play. I mean ichikawa is an amazing player and much better than me, but the second i saw his draw was golgari charm i immediately thought of that, I mean it was his only option. A great play is having a 5 cards in your hand and playing the right ones at the right times.
FvStrangeMusic The problem with that statement is that the Golgari Charm wasn't visible until he played it. Ichikawa flipped it open for a split-second when he drew it, so you would need focus very closely on the screen to see it. Even if you did, you could see it was a gold card, but at this video resolution there was no way to read the card title or distinguish it from for example an Abrupt Decay.
FvStrangeMusic It was great because it was perfect for that moment. It was a pretty lucky draw and Ichikawa was skilled enough to see the opportunity. I'm sure any of the players at the Pro Tour who tested with/against Golgari Charm and Selesnya Charm would have figured it out too, it's just the timing that made for a great play to watch.
*spoiler do not read entire comment if you do not want to know the match outcome* :C man I am sad about how it ended up. I run a similar deck to Ichikawa. I was rooting for him to win. I didn't get to watch him playing live earlier today, so watching this after work had me excited. Jackson Cunningham had lucky "stacked" hands >,> (Pouting a bit). Oh well congrats to him, onto the semifinal matches!
Wizards of the Coast. awesome stuff. I can't get enough. just one little suggestion... with all the on screen information that you provide (which is just amazing in itself), is there a way to show which player's turn it is? especially during these one on one, single matches? because both players are able to cast instants and what not, its not always apparant to the casual viewer just whose turn it is.
why did boon satyr stay on the board after experiment one died? at 37:40 boon satyr was an enchantment so shouldnt it go to grave with the monster it enchanted?
Boom Satyr is a bestow creature, meaning it's bestowed to boost the creature, but when the creature dies, the bestow creature falls off and becomes it's own.
Can we pause not only to recognize Ichikawa's masterful play, but also how insanely fast LSV put together what was happening and the two things that would happen next?
47:40 ,can anyone explain after Ichikawa block the wurm with ooze after using golgari charm, shouldn't he be dealt one damage by the non-blocked token since the token is still 1/1?
that golgari charm was excellent, blew me away, but if I get this right He grows the ooze to 5 to "trade" with the wurm then the Selesnya charm, but a golgari charm on the stack to make this selesnya charm null does he regrow the ooze before damage during the combat phase? I just need to get the ruling and stack effects clear in my head
Yup. Golgari Charm resolves, shrinks the Ooze and the Wurm so they'd still be trading. Selesnya Charm tries to resolve but its target is no longer legal, so it fizzles. Before damage both players get priority again, and Ichikawa takes the opportunity to pump the Ooze so it survives combat.
I'm very new to this game and there is one thing I'm a little confused on - at 38:00 how does Cunningham plays Advent of the Wurm and not tap his mana?
He's doing it at end step so instead of tapping then going to untap he just shows the card and they accept that mana is tapped then untapped on his turn.
can someone explain why golgari charm makes selesnya charm fizzle? if the worm token is still alive after golgari resolves, shouldn't selesnya resolve as well?
jackson used the selesnya charm in its 2nd mode to get rid of a creature with power 5 or greater the golgari charm shrunk both the worm and the ooze to 4/4 making the selesnya charm target null so it couldnt resolve.
Yuuki was missing that dreadbore by turn 3. That card can never be useless, and it's undercosted. He's a very very good player so I don't understand that sideboard decision.
Maybe I miss something....in game one can he not kick mortar...clear 2 blockers and make a token and double attack Ajani down to 1.....no flying double strike and he gains a coulple more turns?
Holy shit.... the judges should've given cunningham so many penalties for slow play. It's ok to tank every once in a while, but he was playing waaay way way too slow.
+evoluti0n09 Yeah they should have a clock like blitz chess or something... so we have a fair measurement and a specific allowance, so people wouldn't complain.
The Top 8 matches have no time limit (unlike day 1) so the players can play the matches without worrying about time limit. That usually helps the players to think on the game, rather on the clock, thus making less dumb moves.
I don't think you understand.... "untimed" does not mean "you can take forever". It just means there's no time limit on the match. Rules regarding slow play and stalling definitely still apply.
Not trying to insult but the reason you take a second or two to "think" when you obviously dont have much is so your opponent doesn't know you're on air. If you continue to take a few seconds to think after a removal, it makes the opposing player think you have protection or combat tricks. If you just instantly say ok resolves when you dont have anything. Your opponent knows you don't have anything.
45:00
Ichikawa demonstrates one of the most masterfully crafted plays in Magic's history.
It’s actually so stupid that the year is now 2024 and I still think about how good the Golgari Charm play is.
Read this as the play occured 🤌
Reduce all creatures by -1-1, dodge selesnya charm, regrow ooze, kill the wurm, the voice token dies of loneliness.
Best play in the history of ever.
man they need to make 45:00 into a magics greatest moments video, dat charm by yuuki
I love how, at exactly the marker you posted, the narrator says "this turn's going to go really well for Cunningham" :D
Golgari Charm in the FACE!
+blinkbunny17 thumbs up for linking to the play. everyone talking about it but i dont have time to watch the whole video to find that specific play! so thanks :D
What would've happened if he chose the +2 +2 and trample
@@glen5938 he had the deck list! nice spot
wow!!! great play by Ichikawa

Aaron Kistler Ok that is understandable.
XAmsterdamX it was very visible, you can see that shape of the art of the card
Ichikawa may have lost the match, but he won the award for Sick Play of the Year. *_WOW!_*
My favorite part is that at the last pro tour of RTR block we see the best battle of the charms one could hope for.
I think this is straight up my favorite match of magic
One of the greatest PT Top 8 matches of all time. (G1 & G2)
49:20 the old tap tap concede by Jackson. love it
The commentary is so good, what a fun match!
Beyond insane golgari charm play. Top 5 play in magic history lmfao
46:05 Replay time.
The plays comin' out from Ichikawa! Someone call Shakespeare I think he's got some competition!
*spoiler do not read entire comment if you do not want to know the match outcome* :C man I am sad about how it ended up. I run a similar deck to Ichikawa. I was rooting for him to win. If I can ever engineer a play as good as Ichikawa's with that Golgari Charm I'll write a damn book about it
why did boon satyr stay on the board after experiment one died? at 37:40 boon satyr was an enchantment so shouldnt it go to grave with the monster it enchanted?
Boom Satyr is a bestow creature, meaning it's bestowed to boost the creature, but when the creature dies, the bestow creature falls off and becomes it's own.
nice! thats m8!
No problem, bud.
Yuuki Ichikawa is great man!!!
Can we pause not only to recognize Ichikawa's masterful play, but also how insanely fast LSV put together what was happening and the two things that would happen next?
that play by Yuuki Ichikawa was great
big golgari charm
That Golgari Charm remains my favorite play I’ve ever seen happen live
47:40 ,can anyone explain after Ichikawa block the wurm with ooze after using golgari charm, shouldn't he be dealt one damage by the non-blocked token since the token is still 1/1?
Cunningham didn't attack with the token.
oh ya thank you!
dat golgari charm doe
Is cunningham the slowest player in mtg pro right now?
Lol. With a white green aggro deck too.
Magnus Rasch You dumbaasses don't even know anything about matchups, do you?
that golgari charm was excellent, blew me away, but if I get this right
He grows the ooze to 5 to "trade" with the wurm then the Selesnya charm, but a golgari charm on the stack to make this selesnya charm null

Lukas DeFrancis thank you for the response, I thought it went that way
I'm very new to this game and there is one thing I'm a little confused on - at 38:00 how does Cunningham plays Advent of the Wurm and not tap his mana?
He's doing it at end step so instead of tapping then going to untap he just shows the card and they accept that mana is tapped then untapped on his turn.
I love magic!
magic is awesome nwn

guitarblade1891 ahhh ty thought the selesnya was used in its first mode on the token
Trevor Hudson no problem!
I'd like to know the logic behind the video editing that it only shows one hand and then changes to the other player with apparently no time logic...
At 7:30 LSV calls Ichikawa Ichigo lmao, I think someone was watching Bleach before he went in coverage
Just wondering for you ajani players do u guys use congregate or the -8 on ajani first?
Speed the fuck up Jackson!!!
Ew wtf is your problem
I agree he was slow but it was his 1st pro tour. I kind of overlook the slow play because of that.
Nikmid Clayton Apparently it was his first constructed tournament, not only his first Pro Tour
Denmark Dan
How can a PT be his first constructed tournament? He won a sealed PTQ?
it was his first constructed tournament, he had a special invite.
Yuuki was missing that dreadbore by turn 3. That card can never be useless, and it's undercosted. He's a very very good player so I don't understand that sideboard decision.
i have no idea what they are doing.
53:28 LSV ranks the Charms and gets it wrong, then 53:51 handwaves Boros. Ugh.
Maybe I miss something....in game one can he not kick mortar...clear 2 blockers and make a token and double attack Ajani down to 1.....no flying double strike and he gains a coulple more turns?
mmm that charm
because golgari charm says -1/-1 until end of turn so the voice token is 0/0 end dies
Epic Golgari Charm was Epic,.
Holy shit.... the judges should've given cunningham so many penalties for slow play. It's ok to tank every once in a while, but he was playing waaay way way too slow.

Luke Booce Oh, so there was no time limit? Cool then.

I hate the current standard... Nevertheless, these plays and players are fucking awesome!
Eh that's why I prefer modern it's so annoying keeping up with standard
I wish Yuuki would have won :(
I bet that room is over air conditioned.
+Lucas Olsen I LOVE over-air conditioned! (I'm from AZ, where temperatures get well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit)
Jackson, put the hat back on...
NO! But walkers!
Anyone else found Ichikawa's eyes a little Unnerving? xD
I thought dat charm was a bit more unnerving.
i play magic is my life i saw a lot of tournaments but
this game is so boring
LOL BTFO.
truly an insane play lol 45:14
