It is just another reason why I absolutely hate gmail app, and have since it came out. I was invited to join gmail back when that was the only way to get it. I'm not impressed by the invasiveness and lack of viable options with gmail mobile. I'll stick with desktop. Ugh.

I found if you go to settings, apps, Gmail and disable Gmail, it will not be functional and the other Google apps will still be functional.

Removing your Gmail account Everytime you have to log off will delete some things and you have to set up your email address again Everytime you have to log in.
