In 1983, Ivorian President Félix Houphouët-Boigny moved the country’s capital city from Abidjan to Yamoussoukro, his birthplace. Huge building sites were set up to transform what was a small village into a modern city: an international airport was built, a polytechnic institute, a presidential palace and even the world's largest church. But most institutions were never transferred to Yamoussoukro and few people ever moved there. FRANCE 24 takes a closer look at Ivory Coast's abandoned capital.

I remember how beautiful this city was in the 1980s. Traveling from Daloa to Abidjan, arriving in Yamoussoukro was a sign of paved and well-maintained roads, streetlights lit at night. How sad to see all these degradations.
It's degraded because the Europeans that maintained it have all left.

@@alanfrost7696 Sometimes reality is disappointing. As you can see, the population to maintain such infrastructure isn't there. It was designed to be big but nobody moved there. It's also largely European technology in a country with a poor education system. So of the people living there, very few are educated to a level where the city could be run efficiently and maintained. It's a city focused on grandeur that completely ignored the skills which would need to be learned to make it function. The results are evident.
My dad is from ivory coast and I'm really happy to see people talking about it, and even caring about the country's current state. Such an underappreciated country! ❤🇨🇮

As a Ghanaian, I had the chance of staying and working on Yamoussoukro for 5 months in 2013 and I could say it was such a lovely place but lacking a lot as well. See the poor roads now. And what at all is the use, still keep reptiles that put your lives at risk all in the names certain dirty river gods? Stupidity at its peak.

I was there in January 2020. Believe me, I have never seen a church so massive like this in my life.
As a Catholic it’s a very nice church and I’d like to visit it someday, but honestly the president should’ve put the money to better use and improved upon infrastructure and on industry before creating a grand cathedral

It's really a shame, so much has been already invested, hopefully it won't go to waste. Yamoussoukro is in the heart of Ivory Coast, and Abidjan is congested. It would be good for both cities that Yamoussoukro be revived so that it absorbs population growth and gives Abidjan's infrastructure room to breath. Ivorians are great people, wishing you prosperity from Morocco.

@Donnell Okafor If I am not mistaken, the plan was for transferring the whole gov services in the first place, which means all the civil servants and their salaries. That in itself is a considerable revenue source for all the rest of services, restaurants, commerce, transport. Not to mention construction. Then there is an opportunity for agribusiness. Anyhow, Industries do not just spring naturally as you might imagine. If the gov isn't actively promoting it, it will not happen. Other cities might be a better alternative for manufacturing though. Concentrating all dev in one place is risky for a country.

That's what I was thinking. Local factory to make croc skin goods for export. 300K crocs could make a lot of purses & shoes.
I worked in Yamoussoukro for a few months last year and to say it’s empty is very unfair. Many countries have capitols that aren’t the first cities. Also even if not totally successful, Yamoussoukro made sense as a capital for geographical and administrative reasons. Great place and I’d definitely recommend going there

Yeah even Washington DC isn't a big city, it was built to be the centre of the first 13 states. Much like how this city is in the centre of the Ivory Coast. Although they probably should have put more money into planing the city as a whole and not splashing out on buildings that look good but serve little function people's day to day, but maybe it's too early to make a judgment on it. Rome wasn't built in a day.
@@ab00abdullah so I’ve worked in Africa quite a lot now but honestly I’d say CI, or Tigray in Ethiopia, have been my favourite trips. The people were really friendly and as it isn’t as popular internationally, it’s far less of a tourist trap than Abidjan (Which is not to say Abidjan isn’t worth seeing in its own right).
I wouldn’t be able to say whether or not there’s a huge amount to do from a tourists perspective as we hardly had any time off work but there’s plenty of cool looking bars and a huge market near the city centre. It’s all relatively cheap as well.

And be careful next time you visit nearby Grand Bassam. Someone released a crocodile couple in one of the streams there years ago and rumors of sightings, even in the lagoon, still occur.

I remembered reading about this cathedral many years ago of which the western media deemed it the “Basilica in the bush.” Lovely building, but what a waste of money; money that could have been used for practical purposes for the people of that nation

I spent a couple of months here working on a mining exploration project a few years ago, strange and interesting place, and yes I fed a chicken to a crocodile in the lake.

@@sigerian1085 I dont know. Somebody more familiar with their history might tell us. Maybe they no longer celebrated diversity and inclusion as much as they do in the US nowadays. They crushed the White Lives Matter movements too. Who knows.

Maybe people want to know why this country still pays France commissions for using the French powered currency?
Rules regarding holding a certain portion of fx reserves in the French treasury are both good and bad for west African countries.
On one hand it provides stability and stops random regional deskpots from wasting it such as in this video.
However it probably is economic exploitation from France as they know a lot of West African countries can’t afford to run their own currency and can therefore use it as regional leverage.

The Ivory coast went down when the French took all their investments out and industry, the Americans did like wise leaving them flat and can not get back up because they have nothing any more to trade. I saw no self pity when I was there but a hard working people. They are very proud of their Cathedral.
Every country the French colonized are in shambles. I’m sure if the French colonized Nigeria and Ghana instead of the British. We won’t be were we are today.

This was and is very stupid and idiotic to build the world’s biggest cathedral in Ivory Coast at a cost of over 120 million US dollars, instead of building the country’s biggest hospital or several health centres in Ivory Coast. Very poor leadership, very poor planning, and waste of state resources.
He was much more concerned with saving Ivorian souls than their health and wellbeing. Their next door neighbour Ghana's president is also building a Cathedral. Dictators or not, they are all obsessed with white elephants.

Africa is BOOMING and this is juts the start. the population is growing and the economy around the continent is growing as well. Would love to go and help out any way I can. For now I just give to charity, I hope many others can too.
Went here in the summer of 2019 while I was travelling Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, and Benin... was debating whether or not to make the detour to Yamoussoukro, but so glad I did. At first it feels just like any flat dusty town in Africa but then you see the cathedral and monuments and they look so out of place.. but a must see place nonetheless....
How was ghana though? In your view how is ghana

Wow...they can turn the city to the crocodile capital of the world. They would make huge money from Tourists. Having 300,000 crocodiles is not a joke.
They should kill 99% of them - 3000 are still enough. Crocodile steaks are great.
Don't get me wrong: I love nature - but those crocodiles are brought there by human, that is why also humans have to controll the problem.
I love animals especially crocs but this number is too high, their leaders should care about their people than those crocs

More of Borneo rainforest slashed! I went to Borneo in 2014. I was saddened by how much the oldest rainforest in the world has been cut to smithereens for palm oil. I heard Indonesia can’t manage the flooding in Jakarta and feel it’s going to be submerged eventually.

3M lions in Nairobi...i wish it was...coz we wont worry about them going extinct one day...but even in the eco system i dont think they can be in that huge numbers
