Growing up with the Simpsons as a kid it was this weird thing where for many of these cultural references, the TV show was actually my first exposure to them, and not the source material the Simpsons was spoofing. So instead of going "oh yeah, i remember when the terminator did that thing in the movie" while watching the Simpsons, i would instead go "oh yeah, i remember when Homer did that thing in the TV show" while watching the movie itself lol.
The thing is, most of it was current/new so it was really more of a contemporary or current-events parody than a cultural reference to classic cinema. A size-able number of their viewers hadn’t seen Terminator 2 or Thelma and Louise at the time.
@CHAIRMAN LMAO I don't think it's necessarily that the source material was dated. Many of the references came out just a few years after the movies they're referencing. But msot kids are going to watch The Simpsons long before they see MA15+ and R18+ movies like Cape Fear or A Clockwork Orange.
It's so much better than the way they spoof movies nowadays. They're full-on parodies now, drawing attention to the fact that they're spoofing it. Sometimes the episode just kinda stops to make a big movie reference.

The t-1000 one might just take the cake. It's a close call with Sideshow Bob's spoof of Cape Fear but man that Terminator reference in combination with Homer's compulsion to hang out with Flanders kills me.

Yeah, it's awesome how they could write references to things, but still make the joke work if you hadn't seen the movie. I had no idea the Cape Fear episode was basically just a parody of the movie by the same name, but it works so well on its own that nobody ever needs to watch the movie to 'get it'.

my absolute favorite one! Something about the way Homer's legs drag in exact imitation but with his plumb body just kills me.
I just love Homer's blank stare when he's chasing Ned.
He missed an earlier scene where Homer melds out of and into the bushes like the T-1000 does through the iron bars, it's great too.
Back when the simpsons was written by harvard graduates
Those pesky elites, making TV that's funny to everyone rather than just the lowest common denominator.

Jeez, they parodied Clockwork Orange's forced-open eyes scene like 3 times.
I was just going to mention when Mr. Burns brainwashed Santa's Little Helper.
Not to mention they parodied it in a Halloween episode A Clockwork Yellow.

The cape fear episode is an almost shot for shot scene of the film
fewer rakes in the movie tho
Same with the episode about the Shinning.

In centuries from now, if there is a planet, we will study the Simpsons to discover how life was like in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The Terminator II scene is my favorite.
The Simpsons, the show that should have ended in the 90s.

How could you leave out the black-and-white Smithers scene where Mr. Burns yells out "Smiiiiiiiiiithersssssssssssss!"
I think they did Phantom of the opera in one episode called flaming homer
They did. Barney rolled in as the Phantom (Andrew Lloyd Webber version).
They did it three times - Homer and Barney as the phantom and Martin Prince as the phantom when you see Lisa's wedding in the future.
When I finally saw Cape Fear as an adult I realized that the Simpsons basically recreated the entire movie.
